JAMES MALONEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CARTRIDGE CAPPER ANDv DECAPPER.
@PECIFICATJION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,449, dated January 19, 18s6 Application filed November 1S, 1885. Serial No. 183,173. (No model.)
.To all whom, it nifty concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MALONEY, o Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Cartridge Cappel' and Decapper; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figurel is a vertical section of my improved device with cartridgecase attached. Fig. 2 is an elevation of my device with cartridge case attached, the swing of the stud being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an elevation of my device with the cartridge'case removed.
The object of my invention is to provide an instrument for removing the exploded caps from central-lire cartridge-cases and securing new caps thereto, which shall be superior in construction and facility of operation to those now in use; and it consistsin the arrangement of the devices for such purposes, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings the device is represented, for facility of illustration, in an inverted position from that in which it is practically used.
A is the frame, to one end of which ishinged a stud, B.
C is the cartridgecase.
I) is a perpendicular shaft-,extending partly through the stud B, and having upon one end a punch, E, and Vat the other a flat lever or disk, F. The interior of the stud B is hollow, such cavity being partially closed at one end to form a bearing for the shaft D. The shaft D is provided with a transverse stud, G, within the stud B, which operates upon an inclined surface and against the resistance of a spring, H, to throw forward the shaft D and operate the punch E.
I is a perpendicular shaft in the'frame A,
which is provided with a iiat leveror disk, J, and a transverse stud, K, which also operates upon an inclined surface and against the resistance of a spring, L, to throw forward the shaft I.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The stud B is swung outward upon its hinge until it reaches the position indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2, when the cartridge -case C is placed upon it and the studB moved into position, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the eX- tended rim of the case passing under a ledge, M, in the frame A, which prevents any perpendicular movement of the case during the subsequent operations. The entire device, with the case adjusted and held as described, is clasped by t-he left hand of the operator. The disk F is turned with the other hand, and with sufficient force to move the stud G upward upon its inclined surface and overcome the resistance of the spring H and impart a perpendicular movement to the shaft D. This perpendicular movement ofthe shaft D brings the punch E in Contact with and forces out the cap N, Fig. 2, which falls ont of the way. Upon releasing the lever F, the punch E is withdrawn by the action of the spring H, surrounding the shaft D, the spring being suitably confined to obtain such action by a stop upon such shaft. A new cap is now placed in position and the lever .I turned in the proper direction, which carries inward the shaftI (in the same manner as the shaft D, before described, is operated) until the end thereof comes in contact with the cap N and forces it into place, when the stud B is again swung upon its hinge, the case removed and another put on, and the Whole operation repeated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a hand capper and decapper for cartridge-shells, the combination, with the frame A, having a spring capping implement in one end, of the stud, as B, hinged to other end of frame A, and having the spring decapping implement in it, substantially as set forth.
2. In a capper and decapper, the combination, with frame A and hinged stud B, each having inclined surfaces, su bstantially as described, of the spring-shaft I, having projection for riding over inclined surface or frame A, and spring-shaft D, having projection for riding over inclined surface on part B, and means, substantially as described, for operating the shafts.
JAMES MALONEY.
