MACHINE FOR FORMING EYES FOR METAL BOLTS AND HOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,433, dated January 19, 18C 6.

Be it known that I, HENRY V. HARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Forming Eyes for Metal Bolts and Hooks, of which the following is a description.
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the line to cc of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the line y y of Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are views showing the successive operations on the iron in forming the eye.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine for forming eyes in the ends of metal eyebolts and hooks; and to this end it consists in means for gripping and holding the piece of metal, a pair of shears for splitting the end of said section of metal, a wedgeshaped former for expanding the split ends of the section of metal, and a pair of bendingplates for bending the split and pointed ends of the metal section around the former to a lapped position,to form the eye of the bolt or hook, as the case may be, the said parts being organized to form a continuously-working machine, which rapidly and accurately performs the preliminary operation of forming the eye and leaves it in condition to be completed by subsequent welding.
In the drawings, X represents the-bed-frame of the machine, which is made of metal and upon which are mounted the several parts of the machine.
A A are gripping-jaws for holding the metal rod or bolt in which the eye is to be formed. These jaws have concaved edges to a, to grasp the rod or bolt,and are cut away at b to give room to the slitted end of the bolt when it is opened or expanded. One of these jaws, A, is secured adjustably but firmly to the bed-frame by set-screws c c, of which 0 passes vertically through a slot in the jaw and fastens into the bed-plate, while 0 is tapped horizontally through a lug projecting from the bed-plate and abuts horizontally against the end of thejaw. The other jaw, A, is attached to a slide, A", moving horizontally on the bed frame in guides A A and provided with a roller, A, operated upon by a cam and retracted at will by hand through a horizontal hand-lever, A".
B and B are the upper and lower jaws ofa pair of shears, which are arranged to move vertically to cut on the middle longitudinal line of the metal rod shown at r as it is held by jaws A A.
O is the former, which is in the nature of a stud projecting upwardly from a base-plate, around which stud the eyeis formed,and which stud has a sliding horizontal motion in line with the rod 1", and has a wedge-shaped side next to the rod, so that when the latter is slitted (as shown in Fig. 4) by the shears this wedge-shaped former passes into the slit and expands its ends, as shown in Fig. 5.
D D are the bending-plates, arranged upon opposite sides of the former and arranged to reciprocate in horizontal plane at right angles to the movement of the former. These plates are attached to slides D D, working in guides D D in the bed-frame,and provided with antifriction rollers D D, which are operated upon by cams, as hereinafter described. These plates D D are set in different horizontal planes, one being a little higher than the other, and their function is to act upon the split ends of the bolt after-the former has passed between and expanded its ends, and thus bend said expanded ends around the former with sufficient lap to permit them to be welded into an eye.
For operating the several parts of the machine a main shaft, E, is journaled in bearings at the end of the bed-frame, and is operated by power through suitable connections. On this shaft there is a cam, E, that operates against the roller 0" of the formerslide 0*, which latter carries former O and moves in guides O of the bed-frame, being forced, forward to open the slitted ends of rod r by the cam E and drawn back again by the spring 0 or counter-cam.
On the shaft E, upon each side of the cam E, are other cams, Band B of which B acts upon the upper lever, 13*, of the shears, while B acts upon the lower lever, B, of the shears. The upper lever, B carries the blade B of the shears, and said lever is trunnioned in bearings B in the bed-plate, to make it cut firmly and true, and has an anti-friction roller where it is acted upon by the cam of the main shaft.
The rear end of this lever B" is made longer and heavier than the front end, and the front end of the lower lever, B is weighted, so that the shears are opened by the gravity of their levers, and are closed by the cams B and 13". At the ends of the main shaft are bevel gearwheols F 1*", that mesh with and impart motion to bevel gear-wheels F F on shafts F", at right angles to the main shaft. These counter-shafts F .F are journaled in hearings in the sides of the bedplatcs, and they bear, respectively, cams D D, which act upon the anti-friction rollers of the bendingplate slides D D with plates D D,to force them inward to the former, the slides being brought back again by springs D" D or counter-cams.
On one of the counter-shafts, F, there is a cam, 1 which operates against the anti-trio tion roller of the gripping-plate slide A which forces the grippingplate up to the other plate, A, for seizing and holding the rod or bolt 2'.
The timing of the operation of the various parts of my invention is as follows: First, the rod or bolt a, heated red'liot, is clamped between the plates A A, then the blades of the shears close upon its protruding end and divide it longitudinally and recede, then the former advances and spreads the slitted ends, and, finally,the bending-plates close the slitted ends of the bolt around the former, and the machine is ready for a new operation.
As a modification of my invention I may dispense with the shears and l ave all the other parts just as described, in which case I should slit the iron before placing it in the machine.
W'ith respect to the method of forming the eye in a bar or bolt, as herein disclosed, and which consists in longitudinally splitting the end of the bar or bolt,and then spreading and bending the arms orsplit ends around a former and lapwclding them, I would state that I do not claim the same in this application, since I propose to cover itina separate application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. An eye-machine consisting of a set of clamping-plates for holding the iron bar, a former for expanding the slitted ends and forming the eye, bending-plates for bending the slitted ends around the former, and means for causing them to operate in the order substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A machine for forming eyes in eyebolts, 8:0. consisting of the combination of the clampingplates A A, the vertically-acting shear blades B B, the longitudinally-sliding and exianding-former G, the bending-plates D D, and means for causing them to operate in the order and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the bed-frame, of the main shaft E, with cams and bevel-wheels, and counter-shafts 1 Fflwith cams and bevelwheels, the grippingplate slide and grippingplates, the shear-levers arranged one above and the other below the bed-plate and provided with shear-blades, the former-slidehaving former O, and the bending-plate slides with plates I) D, as and for the purpose de scribed.
4. The clamping-plates A A, one being made rigid and the other being made movable and both provided with notches I) b and concave edges (1. a, in combination with the vertically-acting shear-blades B B, the expanding-former C, and bending -plates D D, as and for the purpose described.
