To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. FOWLER,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Taughannook Falls, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky- Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7

In these drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my sulky-plow, the plow and seat being removed. Fig. 2 is a view of the right side of the same, including the seat. Fig. 3 is a view of the left side. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to sulky-plows; and it contemplates certain new and useful improvements in the plow for which Letters Patent N 0. 277,258 were granted to me on the 8th day of May, 1883; and it consists, to that end, in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The frame of my sulky is formed by two pieces of U-shaped iron or wood united at right angles, as shown in the drawings, one piece being substantiallyhorizontal, the other substantially vertical. The pole is attached to the under side of the vertical piece of the frame, and is rigidly fixed to the horizontal piece by braces or like connection. In the rear portion of the horizontal part of the frame is pivoted the bail O.

The coupling B is constructed with slots in each side,through which the bailC of the sulky passes. The play of the bail is limited by dropping bolts in the holes P P through the sides of the coupling forward of the bail.

,The construction of the coupler may be considerably modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. It may be made of wood or iron, or partly of wood and iron. The parts of bearing of this coupler on the bail should extend some distance along the bailiu order to secure the best results.

While I have shown the coupler as made of skeleton form, the portion through which the bail passes may be tubular and limited by bolts. Such tube may have more or less play along the bail, as desired.

To the lower ends of the vertical U shaped pieces are rigidly attached the bearing-plates F F. These are the same on both sides, and are provided each with acircular opening, G, and with a slot, H, curved to conform to acircle, of which the circular opening is the center. These bearing-plates may be provided each with a collar around the circular opening, to furnish a more extended hearing; but this is not in all cases necessary.

The stub-axles J and Z consist each of a bar or rod of iron bent into a U shape, one arm, 9', of said U-shaped bar, upon which the wheel turns, being longer than the other, j, upon which the axle is supported. The axles are keyed to the bearing-plates F F, the shorter arms passing through the circular openings G G, the longer arms through the slots, and may be removed at pleasure. The bearingplates F F are rigidly secured to the sulkyframe in such a manner that when the sulky is level on a level surface the land-wheel axle Z will be at the lower end of the slot and the furrow-wheel axle J will be at the upper end of the slot, each in its respective bearing-plates.

The lever L is provided with a plate at its lower extremity, having two openings therethrough. This plate is placed upon the axle just outside the bearing-plate F, one of the openings passing over the shorter arm of the axle, the other over the longer arm of the same. By means of this lever the land-wheel axle Z may be raised or lowered in the slot H of its bearing-plate at the will of the operator, thus keeping the sulky level while plowing.

To the frameis attached a notched segment, and the lever is furnished with aspring-catch to engage the notches in the said segment in ordinary manner. Any other means of controlling the lever may, however, be used. In stead of the plate at the lower end of the lever, there could be a fork, the ends of said fork passing over the arms of the axle; or there may be two pieces of iron at right angles, one end of the horizontal piece of the right angle containing an eye,which passes over the shorter arm of axle,and the other end of the piece passing under the longer arm.

The furrow-wheel M is adjusted by means of the iron strap N, which has at its lower end a collar passing around the axle and is provided with holes, thus allowing a pin or bolt to pass through the strap and frame at any point desired, corresponding holes being made in the frame.

If desired, instead of making holes through the strap and frame, the former may be provided with notches to engage a stationary pin upon the frame. This construction provides for the adjustment of the plow to give the depth of furrow desired. The lever Q is rigidly attached to the swinging bail, either inside or outside the frame. The swinging bail passing through the coupling, as described, the plowbeam is held at a proper elevation by the said lever Q, upon which it has a certain amount of vertical play. \Vhen it is desired to raise theplow,theleverQis pushedforward,theplow rising and carrying with it the coupler and the portion of the plow-beam to which it is attached. The forward end of the beam striking against the under side of the forward portion of the sulky--frame,'the said frame acts as a pivot and the plow is raised therefrom as a center, whereby the plow is raised with a small movement of the bail. The team is hitched to the forward end of the plow-beam in the ordinary manner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A U-shaped stub axle having the arm which is journaled in the vehicle-frame parallel to and pointing in the same direction as the arm bearing the wheel, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. The combination, with a bearing-plate having a bearing and a segmental slot concentric with the bearing, of a U-shaped stubaxle having its arms parallel and pointing in the same direction, and having its shorter arm rocking in the bearing and the longer arm projccting through and sliding in the segmental slot, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

3. The combination, with asulky-frameprovided with a bearing-plate having a circular opening and a curved slot therethrough, of a U shaped axle having its arms passing through the curved slot and circular opening, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with a sulky-frame provided with a bearingplate having a circular opening and a curved slot therethrough, of a U shaped axle havingits arms passing through the circular opening and curved slot, and a lever having its fulcrum upon the arm passing through the opening in the bearing-plate and having one end secured to the arm of the axle sliding in the slot, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

5. The combination,with a sulky-frame having two bearing-plates, each provided with a circular opening and a curved slot, and two U-shaped axles mounted in said aperture and slots, of a lever operatively engaging both ends of one axle, and a collar mounted on the arm of the opposite axle, passing through the slot in its bearing-plate, and having a strap attached to said collar, and means for adjusting said strap, substantially as described.
