' OAR COUPLING. No. 334,410. I Patented Jan. 19, 1886.
fir an? a NATHANIEL BAGBY, OF MOUND STATION, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO \VILLIAM M. COX, OF MOUNT STERLING, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
'SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,410, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed October 20, 1885.
Serial No. 180,442. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL BAGBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mound Station, in the county of Brown and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Car-Couplings. of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
7 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a car-coupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a pair of my improved couplings coupled together.
A represents a draw-head, in which are made two openings, B O, for the reception of the coupling-links. A vertical slotted opening, D, communicates with the opening B,and over the opening D on the upper side of the draw-head is a housing, E, which is provided with a transverse recess, F, and a longitudinal recess, G, that intersects the opening F. A circular opening, H, communicates with the center of the recess F and extends up through the housing.
I represents a coupling-pin, which extends down through the opening D into the opening B. This pin is provided with transverse eX- tending trunnions K, that work vertically in the recess F, and suspend the coupling-pin on the draw-head. The upper end of the coupling-pin works in the recess F, and by reason of the longitudinal recess G the coupling-pin is free to swing back and forth in the opening B. To the upper end of the coupling-pin is attached a chain, L,which extends up through the opening H, and has its upper end attached to a lever (not shown) on the car.
In the opening O, alongside the opening B, is a coupling-link, N, which is held in place by a pin, 0. A spring, 1?, which is held in a recess, R, communicating with the recess 0, bears against the rear end of the spring and presses it outwardly beyond the draw-head. Each draw-head of my improved car-coupling is thus provided with a coupling-link and a coupling-pin.
\Vhen the draw-heads come together, the links N enter the openings B and strike against the lower ends of the suspended coupling-pins I, which yield and allow the links to pass back L in said openings, when the pins I, after the links have passed under them, swing back to their vertical initial positions and lock the links in the openings B, thus coupling the cars together. In order to uncouple, the pins I are drawn upwardly by the chains L.
flien a car provided with my improved coupling is to be coupled to a car having the common link-and-pin form of coupling, the link N is forced back in its opening against the tension of the spring P,out of the way, by coming in contact with the opposite draw-head.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The draw-head having the openings B and O, the link secured in opening 0, and the spring bearing against the link to keep it normally extended beyond the draw-head, and the coupling-pin I, suspended in the opening B and free to swing therein to lock the link of the opposite draw-head, and adapted to be raised to release the link. substantially as described.
2. The draw-head having the opening B to receive the link and the vertical intersecting slot D, the housing having the transverse slot F and the longitudinal intersecting slot G, and the opening H, in combination with the pin I, having the trunnions K, the upper portion of the pin being in the recess F, its trunnions working vertically in said recess and bearing on the draw-head, and its lower end being suspended in the recess D,and a chain attached to the upper end of the pin for raising it vertically to release the link, substantially as described.
In testimouy that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
NATHANIEL BAGBY.
