PLOW-FEN DER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334.408, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed August 18, 1885. Serial No. 174,771.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. AVERY,
I residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow Fenders, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the fender in position on the beam; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the fender; Fig. 3, an edge elevation of the same; Fig. 4, a detail showing the socket for attaching the fender to the beam; Fig. 5, a detail of the socket, and Figs. 6 and 7 details showing the means for locking the fenderrods to the support.
The objects of this invention are to construct a fender that will allow the trash caught to rapidly pass between the rods and slip out, to prevent the accummulation of dirt on the fender and obviate the filling of the space between the shovel and fender by the clogging of the dirt; to allow the fender-rods to spring apart, and also away from the shovel, to permit large sods, corn-roots, and other obstructions to pass through, and, after the passage of such obstructions, have the fender come back to its place again, and'to have the operator observe the small corn in the use of the machine; and its nature consists in the several parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims as new.
In the drawings, A represents a support made of malleable iron or other material which can be cast or otherwise formed into sheets, to have a portion, a, to'which the fender-rods are attach ed, and a portion, a, for attachment to the beam, the two portions being connected, as shown, by a web or bars, a, which bars or web stand in a diagonal relation to the parts a a, so that these parts are in parallel planes at the required distance apart to locate the fender-rods in proper relation to the beam and shovel.
B represents the fendenrods, made of springsteel or other elastic material which will yield under pressure and after the pressure is relieved assume their normal condition.
0 represents buttons or heads for attaching the rods to the support, each button in the (No model.)
construction shown attaching two rods. Each rod at its front end passes through a notch or recess in a flange, b, on the edge of the portion'a, and the end of the rod rests in a notch or recess in a lug, b, formed of the part a, and over the rod, between the flange b and the lug b, a hook, c, on the button or head 0, passes, and the button is secured to the part a by passing its shank through the plate a and riveting it down, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and when riveted down the hooks c act to draw the rods b,which they pass over, securely down into the recesses of the flange b and lug b, and, as shown, the withdrawal of each rod is prevented by forming a head or upset on the end of the rod forward of the lug b.
D is a-clasp or socket made of malleable iron or other suitable material, and having at the center of its receiving portion a hole, (2, to receive a projection, d, on the face of the plate a of the support A, and each end of the socket D is provided with a slot, 6, through which and the beam a bolt, e, passes to secure the socket to the beam, and these slots 6' enable the socket to be adjusted higher or lower, and thereby adjust the fender-rods in proper relation to the ground.
E is the plow-beam, of any of the usual forms, having attached thereto fenders F, carrying shovels F, the standards being suitably braced by bars G, and having a handle, H, braced by a bar, H, and also provided with a hang-up or lifting loop, I, which parts are of the usual construction and arrangement, and such parts form no part of this invention, and are only shown for the purpose of illustrating the relation of the fender to the beam and shovels.
In use the fender is connected to the beam by passing the plate a into the space between the beam and socket D and entering the projection 11' into the hole d, and then adjusting the socket for the required adjustment of the fender, and after the adjustment is made looking the socket to the beam by the bolt 6; and in use the fender receives the dirt, weeds, and other trash or obstructions, and prevents the same from passing over onto the growing crop, and the rods which form the fender proper being open the operator can see whether the fender is doing its work properly,a-nd also ob- That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The support A, having the flange b and lugs 15 b, in combination with the rods B and locking buttons or heads 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ROBERT H. AVERY.
