Description
1967 w. ANDERSON 3,334,793
HANGER Filed July 9, 1965 I2 MHHIH"""" lNVENTOR WALTER Lfi/VDEfFj'a ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,334,793 HANGER Walter L. Anderson, 51 Baldwin St., Bloomfield, NJ. 07003 Filed July 9, 1965, Ser. No. 470,844 1 Claim. (Cl. 223-94) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates generally to hangers, and specifically to garment hangers, the arms of which are angularly adjustable to two positions for use, and as well, are foldable for convenient storage.
It is an object of the invention to provide a conveniently foldable, storable, compact hanger.
It is another object of the invention to provide a hanger for natural-shoulder garments.
It is yet another object of the invention to provide an adjustable hanger.
A still further object of the invention to provide a hanger whose arms are disposed generally horizontally to retain garments disposed thereon, and to keep them from slipping oil.
Yet a further object of the invention is to provide a hanger which is adjustable to two serviceable positions, and is capable of being locked in either position.
These objects and advantages as well as other objects and advantages may be attained by the device shown by way of illustration in the drawings in which;
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of the hanger; adjusted to a natural-shoulder slope position;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of the hanger adjusted to a horizontal linear position of the arms in order to retain light garments from slipping 01f the arms;
FIGURE 3 is a bottom View of the hanger;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the hook portion of the hanger; and
FIGURE 5 is a side elevational view of the hanger folded for storage.
A compact travel hanger has been devised. It is principally characterized by an arcuate adjustment slot, which tends to seat the arms firmly in one of two chosen positions, from which chosen position the hanger will not slip out of the selected adjustment, but will tend to set itself firmly, without excessive tightening of the adjustment bolt and nut, and in spite of the bolt and nut being somewhat loose.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the hanger provides a pair of arms 11, 12. Each arm has narrowed portions 13, 14 at one end. The narrowed portions 13, 14 are approximately one half the thickness of the arms 11, 12. The commencement of the narrowed portions 13, 14 on each of the arms 11, 12 is defined by a generally flat shoulder 15, 16 normal to the surface of the arms 11, 12 and the narrowed portions 13, 14. The ends 17, 18 of each of the narrowed portions 13, 14 are also generally flat surfaces normal to the surface of the arms 11, 12. The narrowed portions 13, 14 are overlapped.
One of the arms 11 has an arcuate slot 19, and the other arm 12 has a circular hole through which a bolt 3,334,793- Patented Aug. 8, 1967 20, capped by a nut 21, is passed. When the arms 11, 12 are adjusted so that the bolt 20 is seated at one end of the arcuate slot 19, as shown in FIGURE 1, and the nut 21 is tightened, the hanger presents an ordinary slopeshoulder hanger designed to accommodate the natural shoulder configuration of garments. In this case, there is a gap between the shoulder 15 and the end 17, and on the opposite side, a gap between the shoulder 16 and the end 18. When the nut 21 is loosened, and the arms are pivoted so that the bolt 20 assumes a position at the opposite end of the slot 19, then when the nut 21 is tightened, the arms 11, 12 present the horizontal-shoulder configuration, designed to retain garment on the arms 11, 12 without slipping ofi (see FIGURE 2).
The bolt 20 also carries a plate 22, terminating in a hook 23. The bolt 20 passes through the hole 24. The hanger 25 may be jack-knifed to fold to the convenient storing position shown in FIGURE 5. This hanger 25 is suitable for holding natural-shoulder garments, which ordinarily will not slip ed, as well as light garments, such as womens dresses made of light materials, which might ordinarily slip oif the hanger unless the arms were positioned as shown in FIGURE 2.
The foregoing description is intended merely to illustrate an embodiment of the invention, for many changes may be made in the construction, selection, and arrangement of the parts, all within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed:
A hanger comprising (a) a pair of pivotally connected arms,
(b) a narrowed end-portion on each arm overlapped with the other end-portion,
(c) a generally flat end on each arm,
(d) a generally flat shoulder defining each narrowed end-portion,
(e) the flat ends and flat shoulders abutting together when the arms are horizontal,
(f) the flat ends and fiat shoulders forming an acute angle therebetween when the arms are in a downwardly sloping position,
(g) a hole formed in one narrowed end-portion and an arcuate slot formed in the other narrowed endportion,
(h) a pivot extending through said hole and arcuate slot,
(i) the arms pivotable from a generally horizontal position to a downwardly sloping position when the pivot is moved from one end of the arcuate slot to the other,
(j) means to lock the arms together in either position,
(k) and suspension means attached to said arms.
