S. S. SPEIGHER.
BROADGAST SEED PLANTER. No. 332,963. Patented'Dec. 22, 1885.
MA F55 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. SPEICHER, OF URBANA, INDIANA.
BROADCAST SEED-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,963, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filed March 22, 1884. Serial No. 125,112.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, SAMUEL S. SPEIOHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Urbana, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Broadcast Seed-Planters, of
which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in hand seed-sowers; and it consists in certain peculiarities ofconstruetion and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertainsto make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my seeder; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are modifications of parts of the same.
A represents a broadcast-seeder of a wellknown form, having a distribntirig-Wheel, B, operated by a bow and cord, and a slide, C, over the seed-opening of the box, connected to a lever, O, projecting within convenient reach of the hand of the operator. In seeders of this description the lever is held back by the operator during the operation of the machine against a stop or screw-rod adjusted to any point desired. This is found very inconvenient and tiresome, and to remedy this defect Iattach to the side of the box A a rod, D, provided with an adjustable stop, (I, having its forward side beveled, as shown, and secured at any point on the rod by means of a set-screw, d, as in Fig. 2. The rod is preferably a spring-rod, and lying close alongside the projecting end of the lever C. When the latter is drawn back, the beveled stop is pushed aside, and springs back again after the lever passes it to hold it in position, as will be clearly seen from the drawings. It is evident that this rod and stop may be varied somewhat without departing from the spirit of my invention, and modifications are shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In the former the rod is shown (No model.)
asjournaled in a small boxing and provided with a screw-thread, and it will be seen the stop is thus drawn back and forth by the turning of the rod, which has sufficient spring to allow the stop to be pushed aside by the lever, as before described. The other modification is a hinged screw-rod lying upon the lever by its own weight, and may be swung aside till the stop is clear of the box A, in or-j der that it may be turned up or down on the rod.
The slot in the'side of the box A, in which the end of the lever 0' works, is provided with a series of graduated marks showing the 6 c amount of opening given the valve, and the stop is of sutficient size to register with these marks and act as apointer in connection therewith.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hand seed-planter, the cut-off slide and its operating-lever, in combination with a rod secured to the side of the frame, and provided with an adjustable beveled stop and means for securing it at any point on the rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In ahand seed-planter, a spring-actuated cutoff slide and its operating-lever, in combination with a beveled stop adjnstably secured upon a spring-rod and adapted to engage and hold the lever, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a hand seed-planter, the slide 0 and spring-actuated lever G, in combination with the beveled step d, adjustably secured by a set-screw, (1, upon a spring-rod, D, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL S. SPEIOHER.
