UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
DANIEL J'. MILLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CABLE RAILWAY.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,933, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filed July 523, 1884. Renewed July 27, 1885. Serial No. 172,846. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, DANIEL J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gable Railways, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is adapted primarily, but not exclusively, for railways in which twin cables are employed, said cables being adapted for optional use, so that either may be used while theother is under repair, so that when both the cables are in working condition they may be relieved by gripping them alternately with successive cars on the road. The carryingpulleys for supporting the cables within the tunnel are preferably mounted in pairs within a frame attached to the transverse I-beams of the tunnel yoke, the said pulleys having grooves near their adjacent ends in suitable position to support and guide the cables in the required position slightly on each side of the center of the tunnel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is an elevation of one of the tunnel-yokes and a pair of the supporting-pulleys, showing the slot-rails and track-rails in transverse section and a grip in end view. Fig. II is a side elevation of the paired carrying-pulleys in position within their frame, showing the mode of connecting the said frame to the transverse I- beams of the tunnel-yoke. Fig. III is a plan of the parts shown in Fig. II.
The track-rails are shown at 1 resting on castings 2 of the yoke, to which also the slotrails 3 are firmly secured, and are braced by ties 4, passing at one end through the said slotrails and at the other end through the risers of the yoke-castings. The bottom flanges of the track-rails l are confined between solid lugs 5 on the yoke-castings and clamp-bolts 6. The paired castings 2 of the tunnel-yoke are connected at bottom by I-beams 7, on
which the paired carrying-pulleys 8 are supported. The said pulleys are combined, as 5 clearly shown in Figs. II and III, so as to overlap, and are grooved near their adjacent ends to receive and support the paired cables. Each of the said pulleys is keyed near one end of its shaft 9, said shafts being mounted in bearings in a rectangular frame, 10, notched underneath its ends, so as to rest on the projecting lugs of'knee-irons 11, which are fastened to the I-beams by bolts 12, passing through wooden blocks 13, which are interposed between the knee-irons ll and I-beams 7, in order to intercept and deaden the noise produced by the running cables.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a-cable railway, one or more carryingpulleys the shaft or shafts of which have their bearings in a frame resting on lugs or kneeirons fixed to the transverse I-beams of the tunnel-yoke,substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combinatiomwith supporting-frames for the rope-carrying pulleys, of lugs or kneeirons bolted to theI-beams and theinterposed blocks of wood or other comparatively soft material.
3. The combination of the paired carryingrolls mounted in a common supporting-frame and grooved near their adjacent ends to receive the cables, substantially as herein shown and explained.
4. A yoke for cable-railway tunnels, constructed with paired castings connected at the bottom by transverse I-beams and supporting at top the slot-irons and the track-rails, in combination with tie-rods extending from the respective slot-irons to the risers of the yoke, substantially as herein shown and described.
D. J MILLER.
