ISAAC D. PASOO, OF BELMONT, NEVADA.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
EBPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,554, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed June 1, 1885. SerialN0.16/,347. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ISAAC D. Pasoo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belmont, in the county of Nye and State of Nevada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to that class of fireescapes which are designed to be held in readiness to be attached, in case of a'fire, to a window-casing, or to some article of furniture in a room, and when one end is so attached a person by the aid of the device; and its object is to provide means whereby the accelerating effect of gravity may be overcome, so that a person may land from a high window with as much ease and safety as from one at the ground.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a fire-escape hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of myinvention.
A represents a strap provided with alouckle, whereby it may be secured comfortably about the person who is to use this fire-escape.
F is a snap-hook attached to the strap A to secure it to the body of the device. The hook might be a plain hook and answer the purpose.
B represents the frame or yoke of the device, in the form of a U, with which the hook F is to be engaged, and in which a winch-roller, (l, isjournaled to revolve freely. This roller is provided with cranks G, one at each end thereof, the two being readily opposed to each other.
D represents a rope of wire, a leather strap, or aline of any material strong enough to safely carry the weight required, and flexible enough to be wound on the drum of the winch.
E represents a pawl adapted to engage notches in the two flanged heads of the drum, to stop the same from revolving by the action of weight, when desired. This pawl is adapted to engage both heads of the drum, in order that it may hold squarely and prevent twisting around.
The operation is as follows: The line D being attached by any suitable means-such as a hook, &c.to a window-casing or other support, the strap is to be placed around the person, who then gets out of the window and hangs upon the line, holding to the cranks and allowing them to revolve as slowly as he may desire. Thus the descent may be safely effected. In case a person desires to rest on the way, he may throw the pawl E into en gagement wit-h one hand; then, the revolving of the drum being interrupted,-the person remains stationaril y suspended until he chooses to descend or to rise, either of which may be done by a little practice in the use of this device.
H represents two rollers journaled in the frame B as guides to the line D.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the U-shaped frame B, the winch consisting of the drum 0, having notches in the edges of its flanged heads, and cranks G, journaled in the said frame, the line D, the guide-rollers H, and the pawl E, adapted to engage notches in both heads of the drum, and means for attaching a person to the frame B, substantially as shown and described.
