Description

(No Model.)
I. W. HUBBARD.
WHEELBD SGRAPBR.
No. 332,532. Patented Dec. 15,1885
I gave %w. @ZQM 164 wmxh UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRED XV. HUBBARD, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE KILBOURNE & JACOBS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WHEELED SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,532, dated December 15,1885.
Application filed June 18, 1885. Serial No. 169,092. (No model.)
1'0 60% whom, it may concern: lower or forward extremities of the lever- Be it known that I, FRED W. HUBBARD, a arms 7 are curved, as shown at 7", and have citizen of the United States, residing at hinged to them the draft-hounds 9, which are lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State connected in front to a tongue, 10, in customof Ohio, have invented a new and useful Imary manner. The curved ends '7 of the le- 55 provement in YVheeled Scrapers, of which the ver-arms engage with studs 8 on the sides of following is a specification. the scraper-bowl, so as (when the combined This invention relates to a wheeled scraper levers are in vertical position, as shown in having the customary crank-axle for lifting Fig. I) to impart a direct forward pull to the- IO the scraper-bowl from its filling to its carrybowl, or, if desired, a slight downward press- 60 ing position, the operating parts being so 0011- me, and when said levers are drawn parstructed and arranged that the yoke portion tially down, as shown in Fig. II, an upward of the axle rises in lifting the bowl by a forpressure for lifting the bowl, and when the ward movement, so that the lifting is imparted levers are in horizontal position, as shown in I 5 by a nearly direct pull of the team. Fig. III, engaging beneath the studs to afford 6 5 The invention consists in constructing the a positive support thereto. A second pair of operating-lever with curved ends to engage studs, 11, are provided in front and below the with studs on the scraper-bowl, and connectdraft-studs 8, which, when the combined leing the draft-hounds with the curved ends of vers are drawn backward, as illustrated in the said lever in such a manner that while Fig. II, form a fulcrum for the draft-hounds 70 the lever is in vertical position a direct pull 9, so as to lift the scraper-bowl by the power is imparted to the scraper for filling it, and of the team, until the rotation of the axle is when the lever is drawn backward the beararrested by the contact of stop-lugs 15 with ing between the curved ends of the operatingthe crank-arms 4. In order to facilitate the lever and the draftstuds on the scraper-bowl movement of the combined levers 7 to change 75 is thrown out of the direct line of draft, so as the position of the bounds 9 and the curved to lift the front of the scraper-bowl, and sublever ends 7" relatively to the studs 8, each sequently the entire bowl, supplemental studs member of the yoke-lever is provided with being provided to afford a vertical fulcrnmtransverse slots 16, by which they are mounted point for the hounds, by which the scraperon thejournals 5. A springcatch, 12, on the 80 bowl is balanced and a lifting force applied to rear of the bowl engages with the transverse its rear end, as hereinafter described. connecting-arm of the levers 7 when these In order that the invention may be clearly are drawn down to horizontal position, and at understood, 1 will proceed to describe it with the same time studs 8 rest on the shoulders 7 reference to the accompanying drawings, in at the forward ends of the levers, so that the 85 which loaded bowl is supported in front and behind.
Figure I is a side elevation of the improved One or more rigid handles, 13, project backscraper with one wheel removed, showing the ward from the scraper-bowl, for tipping it parts in filling position. Fig. II is a similar or working it, as may be necessary, while in viewshowingthescraper-bowl partiallylifted, action. 9 and Fig. III is asimilar view showing the parts A spring catch, 14, connected with the in carrying position. tongue, holds the scraper-bowl in dumping The scraper-bowl 1 is provided with h-angposition when the said bowl is partially iners 2, by which it is suspended from the cenverted for this purpose, by lifting on its rear tral or yoke part, 3, of a crank-axle, having end in customary manner by means of the 5 arms4and wrists 5, on which are formed jourhand-lever 7 when engaged with the springnals for the carrying -wheels 6. On these catch 12. As common with this class of wrists 5 are fulcrumed the arms 7 of the opmachines, the dumping is effected by thus lifterating-lever, which are united at their uping on a rear lever to a sufficient extent to per rear extremities in a handle, 7*. The throw the nose of the scraper in contact with 15C the ground, when the power of the team inverts it sufficiently for discharging its co'ntents.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a wheeled scraper having a crank axle, a yoke-lever, to which the hounds are attached, fulcrumed on the axle-arms and having curved ends bearing under studs on the sides of the scraper to lift the front by the power of the team'wlien thrown out of the center or line of draft, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wheeled scraper having a crankaxle, the combination of a yoke-lever fulcruiined on the arms 'of said axle, and having curved ends to which the hounds are connected, and studs, one receiving the forward draft on the scraper, and the other serving as a fulcrum for the hounds, to assist in lifting the scraper, as explained.
FIR-ED W. HUBBARD.
