ADJUSTABLE BACK FOR VEHICLE-SEATS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332.303, dated December 15, 1885.

Application filed September 15, 1885. Serial No. 177 ,167.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CONRAD STRAUEEL and PETER HEEEL, citizens of the United States, residing at (Jochecton, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Backs for Vehicle-Seats; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this improvement is a vehicleseat having a back. that can be adjusted both vertically and at different inclinations for the purpose of adapting the same to ordinary use, or for the use of invalids who may desire to ride for health or other purposes. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.

Figure l is a side elevation of a vehicle-seat embodying the features of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.

AA represent the seat and the supports for the same, secured thereto in the usual manner and provided with angled plates a (shown in Fig. 2,) for additionally strengthening the connections of the parts.

a a are seat-irons. The seat-irons a are provided with slotted eyes for the reception of correspondingly-formed ends of the lazyback frame 0 0' cl", which is pivotallysecured thereto.

B B are metal side rails provided with slots 1), and screw-threaded ends b, by means of which they are bolted to the seat-irons a.

D D are slotted metal barstransversely connected at the top by abeam or strip, D, and additionally braced laterally by a doublecurved plate, E E, secured to the ends of the bars D D by screws, as shown at d d. The lazy-back G is provided with bolts 0 0', projecting through the slots of the bars D D, for adjustably securing the frame D D D to the lazy-back.

H H are variably-curved rods provided at their forward ends with eyes h, for the reception of bolts K, which pass through the slots 1) in the side rails, B, and, with the hand-nuts L, secure adjustable connections of the rods (No model.)

H to the rails B. The rear ends of the rods H are provided with eyes which fit over screwthreaded projections d of the lazy-back part O, and are secured thereto by nuts, as shown.

F is a cushion extending from the front of the seat to the top of the lazy-back, to which it is secured.

G G are cushions suspended by straps g from the beam D, transversely connecting the slotted bars D. Underneath the seat are straps P P and R R, longitudinally and transversely affixed thereto, substantially as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of forming a receptacle for the cushions and robes when not in use. By unscrewing the hand-nuts L L the lazy-back, being pivoted to the seat-irons a', may be swung back to any desired inclination, by reason of the slots b in the rails B, which will allow the bolts K Kto slide accordingly,when the desired adjustment for the back may be rigidly secured by tightening the handnuts L L. \Vhen the frame D D Dis secured to the lazy-back in the relative position shown and the mechanism is adjusted at a suitable inclination for the comfort of the invalid, the cushions G G will fill the space between the top of the lazy-back and the top of the adj nstable frame D D D, and thus allow the same to be utilized for repose. WVhen the seat is not needed for the special purpose mentioned, the frame D D D may be lowered by loosening the bolts 0 c, the cushions G G hung over the back, and the mechanism used as an ordinary seat; or the frame D D D may be entirely detached and stowed away under the seat on the straps P P R It with the cushions and robes.
