JOHN HAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOILER-FURNACE.
SPECIPICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 331,635, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed July 23, 1885. Serial No. 172,465.
To aZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oruv HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented newand useful Improvements in Boiler- Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the combination, with a boiler and a furnace, of air-pipes, airdistributers at the side of the furnace,in front of the bridge-wall, and connections between the air-pipes and the air-distributers.
By this invention thorough combustion and saving in fuel are attained.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my device. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane a; as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designatesa boiler provided with tubes to. B is a grate. O is an ash-pit, and D is a bridge-wall. The boiler A is provided with tubes a. Air-pipes E can be passed through some of the tubes at. One end of said air-pipes E can communicate with the open air or with any suitable supply of air; or air may be forced or introduced into the tubes E in any suitable manner. The other end of each of the air pipes or tubes E connects by suitable connectionsas, for example, by pipes F and joints or elbows b cwith air-distributors G. The aindistributers G can be formed by boxes or cases of sheet metal or other suitable material. The airdistributers G are placed on each side of the furnace H. By placing the air-distributors G within the wall surrounding the boiler A the air-distributers G are not liable to be injured by the heat of the furnace, and they do not interfere with the draft nor with the introduction of fuel into the furnace H. The fuel can be introduced through the furnace door I, and access can be had to the ash-pit by means of the door K. By providing the air-distributers G on the sides facing the furnace with perforations or openings the air coming to the distributers G from the airpipes E will be supplied to the furnace H, and will secure a thorough consumption of the fuel in the furnace.
A thorough consumption of the fuel in the (N0 model.)
furnace will secure heating of the boiler with a less amount of fuel than when the fuel is but partly consumed, and saving of fuel is effected.
I am aware that in the United States Letters Patent No. 80,265, dated July 28, 1868, is set forth a curve for discharging fine streams of air among the products of combustion; but such curve is shown as being so placed in the furnace as to interfere with the draft and with the poking, cleaning, and tending of the furnace.
By placing my air-distributors at the side of the furnace H, I attain not only asatisfactory introduction of air into the furnace, but the air-distributors G do not interfere with the draft, nor with the inspection and the tending of the furnace and fuel. As the distributers G are in front of the bridge-wall D, the air, on issuing from the distributors G, is in the immediate presence of the combustion going on in the furnace H, and will thus secure a thorough combustion. The air pipes or tubes E, extending through the boiler, will become heated, so that the air passing through the pipes E is heated when issuing from the distributors G, and the furnace H is not cooled by the air from the distributers G. As cooling of the furnace and of the products of combustion may retard the heating of the boiler A, it is well to avoid such cooling. By providing the distributors G with a large number of small perforations the air issues from the distributers G in fine streams, thus securing a thorough action of the air upon the process of combustion.
Of course the air-pipes E, instead of passing through the tubes a, may also be heated by being placed in contact with or close to the interior of the boiler A; but I prefer to have the pipes E pass through the boiler.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a boiler, A, and furnace H, of air-distributors G, consisting of perforated boxes or cases located at the sides of the furnace, in front of the bridgewall, air-pipes E, extended through the boiler, and connections between the air-pipes and air-distributors, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a boiler, A, and
IOO
furnace H; of air-pipes E, extended through hand and seal iii the presence of two sfibs'eribsaid boiler,- ir-distributers G, loeited at the ing' witnesses, sides of the furnace, in front of the bridgewall, and pipes F, having elbows b c,f0r con- N 5 meeting said air pipes and distributers, sub- WVitnesses:
stantially as deseribed. E. KASTENHUBER,
