DEVICE FOR FEEDING HOGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,564, dated December 1, 1885.

. Be it known that I, HARVEY SLOAN, of

Kirksville, in the county of Adair, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Feeding Hogs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to enable a number of hogs to be simultaneously fed without waste of food and without rendering it practicable for one to get more of the same than another, to which end said invention consists, principally, in a device for feeding animals, in the combination, with the feed-hopper, of a universal pivotal support for the same adapted to allow it to swing in different planes, substantially as hereinafter specified.

It consists, further, in thecombination, with the feed-trough allowing access from all sides, of a swinging feed-hopper and a universal pivotal support for the same allowing it to swing in all directions, substantially as hereinafter specified.

It consists,further, in the combination of the swinging hopper of a device for feeding animals and the universal pivotal support for the hopper made adjustable in height to raise or lower thehopper, substantially as hereinafter specified.

It consists, further, in the combination of a suitable frame, the swinging hopper of a de vice for feeding animals, an eyebolt supported in a portion of the frame, and a second eyebolt linked with that of the other bolt, substantially as hereinafter specified.

It consists, finally, in the device and in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.

In carrying my invention into practice a feeding-trough, A, having, preferably, eight sides, is provided at the intersection of its sides with vertical stanchions B, that are connected together at their upper ends by means of a 1 plate, 0. The spaoesbetweensaidstanchions are each sufficient to permit of the ready insertion of the head of a hog, but not to admit its body.

At opposite sides of the trough A two of the stanchions B extend upward and apart to a height of siX or more feet, and over their tenoned ends is fitted a mortised cross-bar, D, which at its longitudinal center contains an eyebolt, E, that passes vertically through the same, and by means of a nut, 6, upon its upper threaded end may be adjusted longitudinally within said bar.

Suspended from the eyebolt E is a square downwardly-tapering hopper or feed-box, F, which has such length as to bring its lower end near to the bottom of trough A, so that by thelongitudinal adjustment of said eyebolt said end may occupy any desired position vertically with relation to said bottom. Asquare opening, 0, considerably larger than the diameter of said hopper at the line of the plate C, is provided in and through said plate, by which means said hopper is free to swing to and fro upon its eyebolt within the limits of said opening. The ends of the hopper F are open, and its lower end has a small area and may be still further reduced in size, or even closed, if desired, by means of a valve, f, which is formed by severing the lower portion of one of the sides and connecting the upper end of the same by means of ahinge, f, to the contiguous portion of said side, the arrangement being such as to permit the lower end of said valve to be swung inward toward or against the opposite side of said hopper. As the edges of said valve fit closely between the contiguous sides of said hopper, it will be seen that the practical dimensions of the opening at the lower end of said hopper may be varied at will by the movements of valve.

Across the lower end of the hopper F, outside of the valve f, is secured ametal plate, G, which operates to insure the relative positions of the sides of said hopper at such point, and also serves as astop to limit the outward movement of said valve. The valve f is moved to and secured in position by means of a screw, H, which passes inward througha threaded opening formed in a bar, I, that extends across the hopper. F over said valve, and has its inner end swiveled within a plate, j, which is fastened upon the latter. By turning said screw inward or outward the lower end of said valve will be correspondingly moved, and when adjusted to place will be securely held therein.

In use of my device food is supplied to the hopper and the latter then adjusted vertically, and the dimensions of its lower end regulated until said food will pass from the latter into the trough, and will stand therein at a suitacontents of the said hopper is exhausted,which supply will just equal the demand, and will be evenly distributed within said trough, so that each animal will receive its share.

In addition to the advantages named, the food is prevented from becoming dirty, and no waste can occur, as no more will enter the trough than is sufficient to supply the place of that which has been eaten.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device for feeding animals, in combination with the feed-hopper, a universal pivotal support for the same allowing it to swing in different planes, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In combination with the feed-trough al 5 lowing access from all sides, a swinging feedhopper, and a universal pivotal support for the same allowing it to swingin all directions, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. Incombinationwith theswinging hopper 40 of a device for feeding animals, the universal pivotal support for the same, made adjustable in heightto raise or lower the hopper, substantially as and for the purpose described.

H 4:. In combination with asuitable frame and 5 v the swinging hopper of a device forfeeding animals, an eyebolt supported in a portion of the frame, and a second eyebolt secured to said hopper and having its eye linked with that of the other bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described. l

5. The hereinbefore described device in which the trough A, stanchions 13, plate 0, and cross-bar D are combined with the vertically'adj ustable eyebolt E, and conical hopper '5 5 F, provided with hinged valve f, bar I, and swiveled screw H, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4 I
