SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331A70, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed Octoberfi, 1884. Serial No. 144,861.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. BOSWORTH, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in BollerSkates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to that class of roller-skates in which the foot-plate can be.
tipped or inclined by the movement of the foot of the wearer, so as to cause the axles of the wheels or rollers to change from a parallel to an inclined position with relation to each other, and thus cause the skate to run in a curved line; and my invention consists in the improved construction of the hangers and hanger-bearings for the axles of the rollers, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents an elevation and partial section of my improved skate, the lefthand forward roller being removed in order to show the slot of the hanger. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the skate, the rear right-hand roller being shown in section, and the adjacent portion of the hanger broken away in order to show the bearing-piece for the roller-axle and the inclosed rubber spring. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the bearingpiece for the roller-axle.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the footplate of the skate, to the under side of which are secured the inclined hangers B B, made in separate halves a a, which are each provided with an inclined recess, b, thus forming a chamber adapted to receive and guide the flanged central portion, c,of the bearing-piece O, and also to receive the rubber spring D. The contracted ends of the bearing-piece G are made to project through the inclined slots (1 in the sides of the opposite portions a a of the hanger, and the said opposite'portions are secured to each other by means of the screw 6. The front and rear hangers are secured to the footplate in an oppositely-inclined position by means of the flanges f f, the slots (1 d of the hangers preferably forming an angle of about forty-five degrees with the bottom of the foot-plate. When the footplate A is held in a horizontal position, the axles E E of the rollers will be held parallel to each other; but when the footplate is inclined to either side the inclination of the hangers and action of the spring D upon the.
flanged bearingpiece G will cause the axles E E to converge at the side toward which the foot-plate is inclined, thus causing the skate to roll in a curved line, as desired.
I am aware that it is not new to provide inclined hangers for the axle bearings of rollerskates, and that it is not new to provide the hangers with an inclined slot which serves to guide the axle-bearing. I therefore make no claim to such construction, but only to the special form and arrangement of the several parts, as shown and described.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a roller-skate, the combination of the fo0t-plate with the longitudinally inclined hanger B, made in two oppositely-arranged parts, a (4, provided with attachingflanges f, inclined recess b, and a slot,d, with the flanged bearing piece 0, provided with the guidingshoulders g g, the rubber spring D, axle E, and rollers F F, substantially as described.
2. In aroller-skate, the combination of the foot-plate with the oppositely-inclined front and rear hangers, made in two oppositelyarranged parts, a a, provided with the attaching-flangesf, and having the inclined recessesb and slots d, with the flanged bearing pieces 0, provided with the guiding-shoulders g g, the rubber springs D, axles E, and roll ers F, substantially as described.
