GRAIN-SEPARATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,468, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed April 9, 1885. Serial No. 161.670.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH BAILEY, of
St. Thomas, in the county of Elgin and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain-Separatore, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the iigures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a part of a grain-separator to which my improvement has been applied, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the saine, taken through the broken line as x x .fc fr, Fig. l.
The object of this invention is 'to provide grain-separators constructed in such a n1anner that the strength of the air-blast from the fan-blower will be regulated automatically.
The invention relates to a grain-separator constructed with the screen and the danlpers of the fan-blower connected by swinging bars, three-armed levers, and connecting rods, whereby the strength of the air-blast will be regulated by the quantity of material on the said screen, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.
A represents the Casin g of a grainseparator. B is a screen, which is designed to be hinged or .otherwise'connected at its forward end to the shoe of the separator. The shoe is not shown in drawings, as there is nothing new in its construction or operation. The rear end of the screen B is supported by the bars O, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the The upper ends of the bars` O are pivoted to the inner ends of bolts D, so that the bars O will not interfere with the shake of the screen. The bolts D pass out through slots in the casing of the separator, also through slots in the rear arms of the three-armed levers E, and are secured adjustably to the said arms by handnuts. The three-armed levers E are pivoted at their centers to the casing Aor to the frame of the separator, and to the ends of their upper and lower arms are pivoted the rear ends of rods F, the forward ends of which are pivoted to the dampers G of the fan-blower H. The dampers G are pivoted at their upper ends to the casing A, so that their lower ends (No model.)
can be swung from or toward each other to open or close "the air-inlet openings of the fanblower H, and thus regulate the strength of the air-blast. The lower ends of the dampers G rest against rollers I, pivoted to the casing A, to lessen the friction as the said dampers are operated.
The screen B and dampers G are designed to be so balanced that the weight of the said screen, when the ordinary quantity of material is passing over it, will hold the said damp* ers in position to admit air to supply an ordinary blast.
Vith this construction, should a greater quantity of material than usual be passing over the screen or accumulate upon its rear part, the rear end of the said screen will be lowered, and by its downward movement will open the dampers G more widely and admit more air, so that a stronger air-blast will be produced to blow off material, and thus clear the rear end of the screen. As the material is blown off the rear endof the screen, the said rear end will rise and again bring the dampers to their ordinary positions. 4
To the rear part of the casing or frame of the separator is journaled a shaft, J, to which are attached radial prongs K in such positions that the saidprongs will pass between the rearwardly-projecting lingers L, attached to the rear end of the screen B, so as to take the material passing off the said screen, shake out any kernels of grain that may be in the said material, and discharge the said material from its rearend. One ofthejournals ofthe pronged shaft J projects, and to it is attached a pul ley, M, to receive a belt, so that the said shaft can be driven from any convenient part of the driving mechanism of the separator.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a grain separator, the combination, with the screen B and the dampers G of the fanblower, of the swinging bars O,th.e three-armed levers E, and the connecting-rods F, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the strength of the air-blast will be regulated by the quantity of material on the said screen,
