VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,430, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed February 13, 1885. Serial No. 155,846. (No model.)
To all whom, it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES D. OWEN, of Silvara, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Vehicle-Springs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved spring where the springs are to be supported directly from the axles. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the spring. Fig. 3 is a modification to be used with side-bar vehicles. Fig. 4 is also a modification to be used with side-bar vehicles.
My invention relates to springs for sustaining vehicles on the running-gear, and has for its object the production of a cheap, efficient, neat, and light spring.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of mechanical devices as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set out in the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the vehicle-body, to the bottom of which are secured the ribs aa. At proper distances front and rear there is secured across ribs a a a square steel bar, 11, by means of circular loops d cl, which form bearings for cylindrical sections 6 6, turned on bars 1). Between each pair of loops (1 d there is a fiat coiled spring, B, having a square hole at the center of the coil f, of such dimension as to tightly fit the square rod or bar I). The outer or free end of the spring terminates in a scroll-extension, g, the extreme end of which laps around a pin, h, having its ends secured in ribs or a. The bar I) has rigidly secured to it by means of a yoke, h, that straddles the coiled spring, a hanger or connecting-bar, 0, provided at its end with a hole, 6 or other means to secure it to the front and rear axles by clips or equivalent devices. (Not shown.) By
this construction, when the body of the vehicle descends from the imposed weight, it moves the connecting-bar and bar 1) around the axis of said bar, and the torsional strain tightens or rolls the flat spring toward the center and increases the resistance of the spring against the load.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, designed for side'bar vehicles, the square bar is short, as seen at 70, and is sustained by two brackets, Z, having square sockets, and bolted securely to the body. In this instance the outer end of the spring is extended tangentially to the coil, and is provided with an eye on its end m, to secure it by clips or otherwise to the side bars.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, designed for side-bar vehicles, the springs n n are arranged in pairs, one at each end of a fiat steel bar, 0, and the springs mutually sustain each other. The square bars are supported by the same means as shown in Fig. 1, and the hanging bar or yoke 19 is rigidly se-' cured to the bar I). The outer ends of the yoke-bars p are provided with eyes or other means for securing them to the side bars.
I am aware it is not broadly new in a vohicle-spring to combine coiled springs with transverse rodsone end of each spring secured to the rod and the other to the body of the vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The coiled springs B, provided with a square opening in their centers, and the ribs a a. on the body'of the vehicle, in combination with the sqaare rod 1), provided with cylindrical journals a c, circular eyes (I d, fitting said journals, and bifurcated hangersO 0, having square openings to receive bar I), all constructed and arranged as set forth.
