EEJPEGIPECATIOEE forming part of Letters Patent 1'30. 321,060, dated November 2%, 1885.
Application tiled March 3, 1885.
T aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Eirnntr HORTON, of Dundee, in the county of Yates and State of New York, have invented certain new and use 5 ful Improvements in Nailing-Hammers, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The subject of this invention is a hand hammer for nailing purposes, in which, as in IOaHOthBI portable hand nailing-hammer invented by me and claimed in a prior application, filed March 3, 1884-, Serial No. 122,772, there is combined a receptacle for carrying nails, a hammer-head below the same, a feed- [5 ing incline or duct for the nails from the receptacle, a device for clamping or holding each separately-delivered nail before setting and driving it, and a handle at right angles, or thereabout, to the hammer-head, and where by the swinging motion of the hammer is made to automatically feed the nails, one by one, to theclamping device, and on release of the clamp which holds the nail in position for being set and driven the nail is or may be driven home by the head of the hammer when suitably swung or raised and brought down for the purpose on the nailhead.
This invention consists in an improved or novel construction of a hammer of this de- 0 scription, including Various details and combinations of details, substantially as hereinafter described, and whereby a very perfect result or action is obtained.
The invention is not restricted to any par- 3 5 ticular size or description of nail, nor yet to responding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a part1 y-section al lon gitudinal and side or vertical view of a hand or portable nailing-hammer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted or under longitudinal view of the same; Fig. 3, a section on the line as a; in Fig. 1; Fig. 4., asection on the line y y in Fig.1; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 2 z in Fig. 1.
Serial No. 157,679. (No model.)
A indicates the hammerhandle, attached to and projecting in front of the inner end of which is a vertically-slotted metal main frame,- B, that is made to form or has secured to its lower end, in front, the hammer-head G, which is arranged to occupy a position at right angles, or thereabont, to the handle.
D is the box or receptacle for holding the nails, mounted on and connected with the frame B in any suitable manner, and mainly of curved marginal configuration on its interior, but sloping upward in abackward direction at its bottom, and that has connected with and beneath it the nail-delivering duct or guide E, for the nails, of corresponding inclination, or thereabout, to the bottom of the nail-receptacle.
The side of the nail box or receptacle D is provided with a lid or door, I), of any suitable description, forintroducing the charge or load of nails that are thrown promiscuously into the box, or rather into the main central portion of it, which is contained within a partition, F, connecting the sides of the box at its top, back, and front, and bottom in part, but stopping short at its upper and lower forward ends, and being so arranged within the box, to the marginal configuration of which it conforms, or nearly so, as to leave between it and the marginal interior of the box or such portion thereof as it faces a curved or partiallycurved way or channel, G, for the nails in their passage from the box. Said partition or inner wall of the way, G, itis preferred to make yielding and adj ustable-as by a screw and slot, 0, at its month end (Zto adapt said way for the reception of different-sized nails. The opposite and lower front end of the channel G is open for discharge of the nails and return of any surplus quantity from said channel back to the box. By throwing or jerking thehammer upward or otherwise suitably manipulating it a certain quantity of nails from the mass within the center of the box are tossed or thrown up into the channel G through its mouth end d, a divider, H, if desirable, extending from the mouth of the channel to the bottom of the box intermediately of the width of the latter, serving to separatelthe entering nails so as to give them free or better admission into the channel G and prevent them from of an adjustable throttle-valve-like regulator,
I, at or near the top of the channel when the hammer is down. This regulator, which may be of any suitableconstruction, serves to :further separate the nails and to limit the number of them which shall pass down the back and under part-of thechannel at anyone time.
The bottom of the outer wall of .the box has a longitudinal slot, 6, in its rear portion of sufficient width to receive the passing nails, heads and all, within it, and in front "of this slot is araised curved stop, f. This-curved stop f serves, in conjunction with the naildelivering duct or guide E, that is vertically divi'ded'or slotted longitudinally, to direct and turn the head of each nail'in succession and'to permit of the nail-heads passing beneath it and out of the channelG onto/the lowerportion, 9, 'of the upper surface of the guide, and so that the nails may be pendent :by their heads beneath the bottom of the box as they slide down the inclined guide E, the slot him which serves to receive the shanks of the nails down through it, and is extended the .full length of the guide, or "therea'bout. Such raised curved stop f dispenses with an enlarged opening for the nail-heads in the inclined guide, and in case ofsmall nails being worked insures a proper position for them. The guide E- has one of its sides 'madeloose and adjustable laterally toward or from its opposite side by means of screws and'rub ber or elastic packing blocks or pieces k k, to vary the width of the sloth tosuit differentsized'nails. When the suspended nails have passed down the inclined guide E, they are-an rested at the foot of it by a cut-off lip or portlon, Z, of a cross-swinging combined cut-off and separating-hook, S, pivoted,:as at m, and actuated by a'sliding trigger, J ,which is controlled bya spring, at. "The cut-offlip Z'works across the lower endof the slot h in theguide E, while the hook-piece 'Z of the combined cut-off and separating-hook S works through a front cross-slot, 0, below the upper surface of theguide E, to take the shank of each advance pendent'nailin succession.
In the normal position of 'therd'eviceS and of the triggerJ the latter is held forward by itsspring n, and the device S clocked forhe'ld so that its cut-.off lip Zcloses the lower end of the slot h in the guide E by the frame B 'on the one side and an upright arm, 1", of the sliding trigger on the other side or within a pro ecting nosepart, s. On pullingthe tr'rgger J back, however, against the'tens'ion of its spring a, which is done'by'a finger :of thehan'd holding the hammer, the arm '9" 'strikes:and presses upon 'the device '8, 'to'turn for'swingit on its pivot, so as'to cause its 'cut-offflip 'Z to uncover or expose the 'front open endof the separate different-sized nails.
hook-piece Zthrough the lower front slot, 0, till arreste d by asuitable stop-as, for instance, by a projection, a, striking the frame B. This projecting of the hook-piece Z causes said piece to pass back of the shank of the advance nail-b below-the front end of the slot h, and to pick said nail out from the other nails in rear of it, which the hook-piece Z then acts as a stop or cut off to, and to pass the advance nail down into the slotted portion 0, from or out of which in front said nail, pendent by its head, drops into or in front of the clamp, which ,holds the nail while being set. The hook or hook-piece Z is or may be made adjustable in or out, and be secured by a set :screw, Z to adapt it to work in more or less close proximityto the shoulders formed by the back of the slot 0, to'enable it to pick out or On releasing hold of the trigger J its spring n throws it forward, and in-so doing the arm 7 acts upon the inside of the nose part s, to return the device S to its normal position, and to bring its cut-off lip lin-closing position with the lower end of the slot h as the hook-piece Z passes from under said slot for a repetition in due course of its separating'action, as before. It thus will be seen that the cut-off lip Z and hook-piece l operate alternately to stop the delivery-of the nails from the slot h of the guide, and that when the hook-piece Z acts as a cut-off it also-operates as a picker-out of the advance nail. In this way only one nail can -'be taken at-a time.
Other means than the spring-trigger here shown maybe used for operating the combined cutoff and separating-hook S.
When the device S is operated to pick out and deliver a nail, as described, a'clamp, K, which is a pendent one pivoted, as at c, to the one side of the frame B, is extended below, so as to come immediately in rear of the hammer-head G, or of a fixed grooved clamping-piece and guide d for the delivered nail,'to permit of the nail falling to its place for setting it in'the work. This clamp K is atensiononeit "being controlled and closed upon the nail by aspring, e'. Said clamp may be opened or drawn back against the tension-of its spring to receive the nail by op-v crating 'iteither directly-orthrough itsspring,
' whichmay'beadjustable by ascrew, f, by a projectiomj, on the trigger J, as shown, so that on pulling back the trigger theclamp is opened or removed-to receive-the nail, and on releasing holdof thetrigger it is thrown forward by its spring to clamp or hold the nail while beingset. This lower tension applied tothe'clamp K is sufficient to hold the nail while setting it in the work bythrowing or driving the hammer as it holds the nail; but by jerking the hammer upward again the clamp is released fromthe-nail thus-stuck into thewood-or, in other-words,-thespring-clamp slippedfromoff thestuck nailwhen or after which the nail maybe-driven home by striking it on its head with the hammer-head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters.
