Description

i larger ratchet wheel UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. A. N. LONG, OF FISHERVILLE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO J. B. RAND, OF SAME PLACE.
ROCKING- CRADLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 33,045, dated August 13, 1861.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WVM. A. N. LONG, of Fisherville, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Rocking Cradles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical cross section of the machinery and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the whole machine.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment and arrangement of certain devices the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now describe its construction and operation.
(A) represents the frame provided at one end with a box for the machinery as shown in Fig. 1.
(B) is the cradle which is hung on pivots (c c). It should be particularly observed that the bottom of the cradle is composed of two pieces of equal width both-of which in oline toward the center at a suiicient angle to prevent the infant from rolling from side to side, thus enhancing the comfort of the child, besides making the cradle operate more perfectly. One end of the cradle should be provided with pins which will regulate its swing.
(C) represents the large ratchet wheel and (d) the small one, both upon the same shaft as fully seen in Fig'. 1.
(a) is a pawl which is pivotepd to the (g) represents a spring placed behind the pawl.
(f) is a shaft upon which is secured the sleeve (7L). To this sleeve is pivoted the escapements (Z) o) in the manner shown in Fig. 1. Y
(e e) are pins secured to the escapements and are stops. Thus it willi be seen that the working of the escapements o) will be regulated by means of pins (e e) and stops (7c) represents a rod which is secured to the shaft (f), between the box and cradle as fully shown. At the lower end of this rod is attached a short lever (p), which lever is provided at its end, with a small hole, for the purpose of slipping over a pin in the end of the cradle.
(G) represents a spiral spring, and is secured as seen in Fig. 2.
(m) is a cord, one end of which is attached to spring (G) while the opposite end, passing under pulley (o), is secured to the same shaft, upon which the two ratchet wheels and are located. It should be observed that the end of said shaft is square, in order that it may be turned by a key.
The operation of my invention is as follows: It is first wound up by means of a key, which, when done the ratchet wheels immediately commence to revolve. Now it will be noticed, that as the escapements o) are secured one at the bottom and the other at the top of sleeve (71,), that. the ratchet wheel (C) as it revolves, will be caught alternately by the escapements, thus giving a swinging motion to the cradle and preventing at the same time the ratchet wheels from revolving too rapidly.
)Vhcn the machine stops, all that is necessary to again put it in motion, is to wind it up.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. The employment of the spiral spring (G) as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The employment of a cradle whose bottom shall be inclined when said cradle shall be operated substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
VIn witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of witnesses VM. A. N. LONG.
` Vitnesses:
EDWARD M. LONG, DOUGLAS M. RAND.
