Description
PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL NONLAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,Q22, dated July 30, 1861.
To alt whom it may concern: i
Be itvknown that I, SAMUEL NowLAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in`
which- Figure l. represents a plan view of my machine with the top removed and, Fig. 2. a sectional view of the same.
My invention consists, first, in providing the tub or case of washing machines with inner perforated side walls and bot-tom arranged in relation to the outer walls and bottom, substantially as hereinafter shown and described. Second. In the combination with the outer and inner side walls and bottom of a second bottom formed in two parts each being hinged to opposite side walls and both united at the center by a toggle joint and of a suitable mechanism to impart to the said bottom the motion or motions as hereinafter set forth.
The general functions of Washing machines being well understood it is here unnecessary to explain the general object and purposes of these my improvements they relating more especially to the construction, combination and arrangement of parts whereby the same work with greater efficiency and without more time and labor being bestowed upon it.
Referring to the accompanying drawing 'I represents the tub or case which is here shown of quadrangular form.
The top plate B is provided with a trap door A forming a tight joint with the recess or aperture in the said plate by having the edges beveled correspondingly with those of the aperture. The door is hinged or may be otherwise rendered capable of being removed or opened and shut. In one of the corners of the .tub formed by the two adj oining side-walls is placed a tube S properly incased by a wooden box or other nonductile material, its lower end being brought in close proximity to the bottom of the tub, where it is bent at right angles and conveyed in a direction parallel to the bottom a distance not exceeding the center of the tub.
The upper end of the pipe or tube it is intended to be connected with a boiler of convenient construction which may be placed upon a furnace or a range as the case may be, for the purpose of generating steam. The pipe should furthermore be provided with va cock so that by opening the same, steam may be allowed to enter the tub, there to heat the water or lye and to agitate it as is customary in washing apparatus of a larger order and known as steam washing apparatus.
U, V and W in the drawings are interior vertical side walls extending from the bottom to the top or nearly so at suitable distances from the outer walls say from four to six inches. The perforated side walls are provided with a perforated bottom which is constructed of two parts M, M', hinged together in the center and hinged respectively to the side walls. To the side of the tub and between the two side walls is applied a crank or eccentric operated by an outside crank C. To the inner crank is attached a connecting rod D to which is jointed a working beam E running between the two bottoms to the center thereof where it is connected by a sort of a toggle joint with the two halves of the perforated bottom.
It is obvious that by rotating the outer crank an up and down motion will be imparted to the perforated bottom which is greatest at the center and least at the hinged sides thereof. The cloth to be washed is thrown through the trap upon the perforated bottom where it is confined by the perforated side walls the water and lye or either is then introduced and steam put on to heat it. The crank is then operated by which the cloth is alternately compressed whereby the liquid is expelled through the perforations of the side walls and bottom. Upon the bottom forming a downward angle the liquid is caused to rush in through the holes and pervade the mass of clothes. By repeated action the clothes will be found washed after a very short lapse of time and with but little exertion.
Having thus described my invention I shall state my claims as follows:
1. Providing the tub or case of washing machines with inner perforated side walls and bottom arranged in relation to the outer bottom the motion or motions as herein set 1G Walls and bottom substantially as herein forth. shown and described. In testimony whereof I have signed my 2. The combination With the outer and inname to this specification before two sub- 5 ner perforated side Walls and bottom of a soribing Witnesses.
second bottom formed in two parts each be- SAMUEL NOWLAN. ing hinged to opposite side Walls and both Witnesses: united at the center by a toggle joint and of A. B. UAR, a suitable mechanism to impart to the said JOHN S. HOLLINGSHEAD.
