Description
1366- 1966 P. J. TAORMINA SAFETY GUN HOLSTER Filed Dec. 23, 1965 INVENTOR PETER J. TAORMINA BY m ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,289,903 SAFETY GUN HOLSTER Peter J. Taormina, 101 E. Maujer St., Valley Stream, Long. Island, N.Y. Filed Dec. 23, 1965, Ser. No. 516,057
6 Claims. -(Cl. 224-2) This invention relates generally to small arms or guns, and is especially concerned with a safety accessory therefor in the nature of a gun holster.
As is well known to those versed in the handling of guns, tedious precautions must be taken to prevent their unintended use and consequent accidental injury. For example, it has heretofore been required that policemen, upon arriving at home after a days work, remove any bullets from the gun, and place both the gun and bullets under lock and key. Of course, this is a time-consuming procedure, likely to be overlooked under distracting circumstances, and sometimes causes serious delay in answering an emergency call.
Accordingly, it is an important object of the present invention to provide a unique holster construction which positively insures that a gun cannot be removed from the holster, and further positively assures that the gun cannot be fired when in the holster.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a holster construction having the advantageous characteristics mentioned in the preceding paragraph, which is extremely simple in structure, durable and reliable throughout a long useful life, foolproof in operation, and which can be economically manufactured for sale at a reasonable price.
- Other objects of the present invention will become apparent upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a material part of this disclosure.
The invention accordingly consits in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope will be indicated by the appended claims.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view showing a gun holster of the present invention, illustrating a gun in position in the holster, and showing a pair of handcuffs in retaining engagement with the gun.
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view, somewhat enlarged, taken generally along the line 22 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view, also enlarged, taken generally along the line 33 of FIGURE 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and specifically to FIGURE 1 thereof, the gun holster is there generally designated 10, and includes a pair of facing, inner and outer walls 11 and 12 which may be configured to conformably receive therebetween a gun 13. The holster may be fabricated of leather, or other suitable material, as desired, and may be formed of a single piece of sheet material, the back wall 11 being integral with the front wall 12 as by a fold or bend 14 along one side edge, and having the other side edges secured together by suitable means, such as stitching 15.
At least one end of the holster is open, the larger end, as at 16 for insertion therethrough and removal therefrom of the gun 13.
The gun 13 may be conventional, including an elongate barrel 18 having a handgrip or handle 19 at one end of the barrel. A trigger 20 may extend from the barrel 18 adjacent to the handle 19, and is encompassed by a trigger guard 21. When engaged in the holster 10, the gun 13 is conformably received therein, and at least the barrel 18, trigger guard 21 and trigger are entirely within the holster, between the facing holster walls 11 and 12. The hand- "ice grip 19 may extend beyond the open holster end 16, if desired. 1 1
Formed in each of the facing holster walls 11 and 12 is a thru aperture or hole 23 and 24, respectively. The holes or openings 23 and 24 are in registry or alignment with each other, and are located so as to register with the trigger guard 21 at a location therethrough behind the trigger 20. The holes 23 and 24 may each be reinforced by a grommet, as at 25 and 26, respectively. That is, the grommet 25 is disposed within and extends about the bounding edge of hole 23, while the grommet 26 is disposed within and extends about the bounding edge of hole 24. The grommets 25 and 26 serve to stiffen or reinforce the adjacent material of respective walls 11 and 12, as Well as preventing wear of the holes.
It will now be appreciated that a suitable retainer may be inserted through the registering holes 23 and 24, and through the aligned trigger guard 21, behind trigger 20, such that the gun 13 is positively retained in the holster 1i), and the trigger 20 is postively prevented from being pulled or retracted. Even cocking of the gun is positively prevented.
Toward this end, a pair of handcuffs is generally designated 28, one loop or cuff thereof being designated 29, and including an elongate portion 30 engaged through the aligned openings 23 and 24 and intermediate trigger guard 21, behind the trigger 20. With the cuff 29 locked closed, it will be appreciated that the cuff portion 30 effectively retains the gun 13 in the holster and prevents inadvertent firing or cocking of the gun. Of course, mere removal of the cuff portion 30 from the openings 23 and 24 returns the gun to its full operative condition.
From the foregoing, it is seen that the present invention provides a gun-holster construction which fully accomplishes its intended objects and is well adapted to meet practical conditions of manufacture and use.
Although the present invention has been described in some detail by way of illustration and example for purposes of clarity of understanding, it is understood that certain changes and modifications may be made within the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
