Description
(No Model.) I
G. E. HART.
METHOD OF MAKING A COMBINED WHEEL AND PINION. No. 328,402. Patented Oct. 13, 1885.
following is a full, clear. and exact description UNITED STATES GEORGE E. HART, OF WVATERBURY,
PATENT CrFicE.
CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE \VATERBURY WVATCH COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,402, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed July 30, 1885. Serial No. 173,059.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HART, of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Combined 'Winding-Wheel and Pinion; and I do hereby declare that the thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear side of my blank after having been subjected to the operation of the pinion-forming die. Fig. 2 is a like view of the front side of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of said blank upon line 90 x of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively rear and front views of the finished wheel, and Fig. 6 is a section of the same upon line z z of Fig. 5.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable a combined wheel and pinion to be easily and cheaply constructed, to which end said invention consists in the method employed for constructing a combined wheel and pinion from one piece, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the carrying of my invention into practice I punch from a sheet of metal a round blank, A, which has substantially the diame ter of the finished wheel and about twice the desired thickness of the same. The blank A is placed between a male and a female die which have, respectively, the external and internal form and dimensions of the desired pinion, and with or by means of said dies I produce upon one face of said blank a pinion, a, and form within the opposite face a corre- (No model.)
sponding recess, a, the metal displaced in the production of the latter being forced outward for forming said pinion. The rear face of the blank is now cut away to the bottom of the recess a, leaving a sufficient thickness only for the finished wheel, after which the article is completed by cutting teeth (1 around the periphery, and forming an axial opening, a, for the reception of an arbor or axial bearing. 7
The article thus constructed is applicable for use as a dial-wheel and pinion, windingwheel and pinion, or in any place where a combined wheel and pinion are employed, and while possessing all of the accuracy which is obtainable by other methods of construction has greater durability in consequence of the compression of the metal forming the pinion, and can be produced at a much less cost.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is The method of forming a combined gearwheel and pinion, con'sisting, first, in pressing the metal from the center of one side of a double-thickness blank outward, so as to form at the opposite front sideaprotuberance having the shape and dimensions of the desired pinion, next removing the surplus metal from the rear side of said blank, and, finally, forming around the periphery of said blank gear-teeth, and at its center an axial opening, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingI have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of July, 1885.
GEORGE E. HART.
Witnesses:
CHARLES S. CHAPMAN, G-Eo. E. TERRY.
