BY M
United States Patent The present invention relates to a cam-controlled apparatus for throwing out the bolts from the counter punch of bolt presses or the like.
It is known to design the thrower pin in cam-controlled apparatus for throwing out the bolts from the counter .punch of bolt presses relative to its lifting position and its lifting height such that it can be adjusted.
A known design is formed such that the thrower pin ,is mounted in a sleeve adjustable in a machine frame and carries at its rear end an adjusting screw which lcooperates with a thrower lever, which is operated by means of a cam-operated intermediate lever for a swinging movement. For the purpose of adjusting the thrower pin, the sleeve as well as the adjusting screw must be screwed in and out, respectively. Furthermore, also the intermediate lever must be adjusted relative to the drive cam, in order to accommodate the swinging stroke of the thrower stroke. The adjustment is thus cumbersome and timeconsnming.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a cam-controlled apparatus for throwing out the bolts from the counter punch of bolt presses or the like, wherein the adjustment of the lifting position and of the lifting height of the thrower pin is simplified by providing a single adjusting spindle, whereby a rod-less design is created and, nevertheless, a sudden start of the operation of the thrower is avoided, because the thrower lever remains continuously in engagement with the thrower pin.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a cam-controlled apparatus for throwing out the bolts from the counter punch of bolt presses or the like, wherein the pivot point of an intermediate lever disposed in the swinging plane of the thrower lever and supported by the convex curved back of the thrower lever is adjustable in axial direction of the thrower pin by means of an adjusting spindle guided in this axial direction in the ma- .chine frame. 7
By this arrangement the advantage is brought about that the adjustment of the lifting position sets simul taneously also the lifting height.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a cam-controlled apparatus for throwing out the bolts from the counter punch of bolt presses or the like, wherein a bolt projects through the intermediate lever at its mounting end controlled by a drive ream, whereby an adjustment spindle engages the bolt and the projecting ends of the bolt are guided in slots of the machine frame, in 'order to design the adjustment means reliably and in an economical manner. I
It is still a further object of the present invention to provide a cam-controlled apparatus for throwing out the bolts from the counter punch of bolt presses or the like, wherein a drive cam is equipped with a projection extending beyond its base circle, as well as with a recessed portion which is radially adjustable and extends below the base circle and the bearing eye of the intermediate lever has a dropping round face, in order to obtain advantageously, without interfering with the operation of the thrower, additionally also a return setting.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the
3,266,071 Patented August 16, 1966 present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of the housing formed in the machine frame in which the thrower lever and an intermediate lever are disposed adjacent a cam in the starting position of the lever;
FIG. 2 is a vertical section along the lines 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a section similar to that shown in FIG. 1, indicating the lever in thrower position; and
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary showing of another embodiment of the present invention, in which, due to the cam formation, a return setting, for instance, in double-printing presses, a withdrawal of the thrower pin isobtained.
Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to the embodiments disclosed in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the apparatus comprises a thrower lever 2 swingably mounted about a pin 1, and the ball-shaped head 2' of the thrower lever 2 engages the end of the thrower pin 3, which is axially movable in the machine frame 4.
The back 5 of an intermediate lever 5, controlled by means of a roller 7 cooperating with a cam 6, engages the back face 2" of the thrower lever 2, an adjustable pivot pin 8 of the intermediate lever 5 being disposed above the pin 1 of the thrower lever 2.
The term above is to be understood in connection with the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings. It is to be understood, however, that the arrangement of the present invention permits also other relative positions.
The pivot pin 8 of the intermediate lever 5 is disposed at the level of the thrower pin 3. In order to form the adjustable pivot point for the intermediate lever 5, the
end equipped with a bearing eye 5" is received by the pivot pin 8. The projecting ends of the bolt 8 are flattened and are guided in complementary slots 9 in the machine frame 4.
An adjustment spindle '10 engages the bolt 8, which adjustment spindle 10 is threadedly mounted in the machine frame 4 and has, for instance, a hand wheel (not shown) at its outer end. It is also suitable to provide an indicating device, as a micrometer scale, in order to indicate the setting of the pivot point 8.
The thrower lever 2 is subjected to the effect of a pressure spring 11, while the intermediate lever 5 is subjected to the effect of a tension spring 12.
It is of course also possible to connect the spindle 10 with the bolt 8 by any suitable operating means.
The back 2" of the thrower lever 2 is of a convex shape, while the back 5' of the intermediate lever is disposed linearly.
Due to the effect of the springs 11 and 12, the rolling curve face of the thrower lever 2 engages rigidly the straight back 5 of the intermediate lever 5 and the latter engages the cam 6 by means of the roller 7, the cam 6 being rotatably mounted in the machine frame 4 on a drive shaft 13.
In the starting position disclosed in FIG. 1, that means, in the withdrawn position of the thrower pin 3, the roller curve face of the thrower back 2" engages the head end of the lever 2 on the back 5' of the intermediate lever 5 at the level of the thrower pin 3.
The present apparatus operates in the following manner:
The shaft 13 is driven by the main shaft (not shown) of the bolt press. As soon as the cam 6 engages the roller 7 (FIG. 1), the intermediate lever 5 swings out about the bolt 8. The back face 5' dropping tangentially from the bearing eye of the intermediate lever 5 causes a swinging of the thrower lever 2, which turns about the p vot pin 1 and throws out, thereby, the thrower bolt or pm 3 at slow speed, but with a great force. During the continued movement of the intermediate lever 5, due to the roller curve, the swinging movement of the thrower lever 2 is accelerated, until the position disclosed in FIG. 3 is reached. By this continued movement, a great speed with reduced pressure force is brought about, so that the pin is thrown out.
Upon surpassing the head of the cam 6, the intermediate lever 5 returns into its starting position (FIG. 1)
due to the effect of the tension spring 12. The thrower lever 2 returns likewise into its starting position due to the elTect of the pressure spring 11. The angular space required for the described control movement is limited to less than 180 of the rotary angle of the main shaft, so that sufficient time remains for the driving and for the shearing oif the raw bolts, which is of importance in fastoperating high-power presses.
Referring now again to the drawings, and in particular to FIG. 4, another embodiment of the apparatus is disclosed, in which an application of the thrower apparatus on double printing presses in connection with a set-back device is provided. Such set-back device serves the purpose to withdraw for a certain length x the thrower lever engaging the thrower pin after the clinching operation, so that the thrower pin can also be set back and permits the following pressing of diificultly pressable complicated bolt head forms.
For this purpose, the drive cam is equipped with a cam portion 21 extending beyond the base circle 20 and with a recess 22 extending below the base circle. This recess can be adjusted radially in the direction of the arrow y as to its depth in a manner (not shown), for instance, such that a radially adjustable segment is disposed ad- 'jacent thereto. The back 23' of the thrower lever 23 has a roller curve, the roller 24 of the intermediate 'lever 24 is linearly arranged, yet has at its bearing eye 25 a dropping eccentric round face 25. The intermediate lever 24 yields at first during rotation in the direction of the arrow a of the cam disc from the starting position shown in point-dotted lines into the position shown in full lines,
whereby the thrower pin 26, transmitting the pressure, steps back for the length x and permits the formation of the bolt head. Then, the cam 21 controls the intermediate lever 24 with the provided stroke H into the thrower position (shown in dotted lines), from which then, as already described, the intermediate lever 24 and the thrower lever 23 return into the starting position, shown in point-dotted lines.
By setting of the spindle 27 the shaft length of the bolt making piece to be pressed may be exactly measured.
While I have disclosed several embodiments of the present invention, it is to be understood that these embodiments are given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claims.
I claim: 1. An apparatus for the throwing out of bolts from the counter punch. of a bolt press or the like, comprising a housing, a thrower lever swingably mounted in said housing, cam means rotatably mounted in said housing, an intermediate lever pivotally mounted in said housing and controlled in its swinging movement by said cam means, so that said thrower lever moves toward a thrower pin by means 'of said cam-operated intermediate lever, said thrower lever having a convex-faced back face, said intermediate lever having its pivot means disposed in the swinging plane of said thrower lever and engaging said convex-faced back face of said thrower lever, and a spindle disposed eoaxially with said thrower pin and mounted in said housing for axial movement in enrgagement with said pivot means of said intermediate lever, and said pivot means of said intermediate lever being adjustable in axial direction of said spindle by adjustment of the latter. 2. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said intermediate lever has a bolt extending through said intermediate lever at its mounting end, said bolt constituting said pivot means, said spindle engaging said bolt, said bolt extending at both ends beyond said intermediate lever, and said housing has slots disposed longitudinally in the direction of the axis of said spindle and receiving the protruding ends of said bolt for adjustment of the latter. 3.
