UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
CLEMENT SMITH, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO 0. J. BAKER, OF
SAME PLACE.
ALIGNER FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHlNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325.635, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed May 23, 1884 (No model.)
1 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GLEMEnT SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- peka; in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansaahave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aligners for Type-Writing Machines; and I do declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawings, and-to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 isa front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for aligning the type of writing-machines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the ap pended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a transverse rod or bar, which is provided with supports 13, having transverse perforations or bearings c, in which the ends of the rod are adjustable. Set-screws I) serve to fix the position of the rod with relation to the supports 13 after adjustment.
Each support B is provided with an arm, D, which is usually made with a coiled elastic or else adjustable end bearing, E, and said arm 1) is adjustable with reference to the rod A, being usually seated in a perforation or bearing, 0, of the support B to which said rod is connected. The supports B, with their arrnsD, engage the apertures at the sides of the type basket of the writing machine, through which the ribbon passes, and are adjusted to fit the same firmly and securely without interfering with the ribbon. The position of the transverse rod A is therefore in front of the center of the type-basket or in rear of said center, as may be preferred.
On the rod A is a sleeve, E, carrying a bearing, F, on which is placed the adjustable aligner-arm G, which is provided with the aligning-gage H, the latter being of any desirable pattern or form. The arm G, carrying the gage H, is provided with a set-screw, h, for fixing its adjustment, and the sleeve E is also provided with a set-screw, k, for a like purpose. The bearing F is thus made adjustable on the rod lengthwise of the same, and the gage-arm is adjustable to or from the rod. .The gage may therefore be brought readily into the proper position for rectifying the type of the machine. When once adjusted, it can be kept without change or altera tion, and is always in readiness for application to rectify any letter of the machine which may be out of alignment. hen the aligner is in position, the type is brought to proper position with reference to the gage, and is thus properly adjusted by means of the screw in its chair.
The aligner can be applied to or detached from the machine instantly, without removing or interfering with any portion thereof.
In using this aliguer it is not necessary to spring the t pearms, which is a very injurious procedure, and apt to ruin the bearings of said arms.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the aligner-bar extending transversely, of adjustable arms engaging the ribbon slots of the type-writing machine, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the transverse aligner-bar, of the supports 13, adjustable on said alignenbar, the arms D, adjustable in said supports, the sleeve-bearing adjustable on the aligner-bar, and the gage-arm adjustable on the sleevebearing, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the transverse aligner-bar, and its adjustable supports engaging the ribbon slots of the writing-machine, of the adjustable bearing on said bar, and the adjustable gage-arm on said bearing, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLEMENT SMITH.
