SPECIFICATION forming part o Letters Patent No. 325,580, dated September l, 1885.

To all whom zit may concern,.-

Be it known that I, PETER WEIMAR, a citi zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garriages, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation ot' a portion of a carriage embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a View of the inside thereof. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section thereof in line Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a view of the inside of a portion thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention relates to .improvements in carriages known as landausf7 and it consists in providing the carriage-door with a rising and falling sash and a rising and falling frame for said sash, whereby the sash can be raised and lowered independently of or in connection with said frame.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the door of a carriage, the same being hollow or chaxnbered, and B represents the folding irons usual in a carriage known as a landau.1

C represents a rising and falling frame, which may be lowered into the door A, and,when raised, supported on the top D of the door, said frame boing connected with the irons B by means of the screws E, which, as seen, are iitted in slots F of said irons.

G represents a rising and falling sash of any suitable construction, which `is iitted within the frame C, and adapted when raised to be supported on the bottom bar, C', of said frame C, and,when lowered,to enter the door It will be seen that `when the parts are in the position shown. in Figs. 2 and 3, the sash G is raised and supported within the frame C, the latter being elevated and sustained on the top of the door A for purposes of a closed carriage.

When it is desired to open the sash, it is raised so as to clearl the shoulder or inner molding of the bar C of the frame C, and then lowered into the door, controlled by the strap H, the trame C being in no wise disturbed. It is evident that by means of the strap H the sash may be raised above the bar C and then pushed outwardly, and afterward rested on said bar.

When an open carriage is desired, the frame Gis raised clear of the top of the door and pulled inwardly, and thus both said frame G and the sash G may be lowered into the door. The screws E follow the descending frame G,

land pass entirely through the slots F of the irons B, and enter the side grooves, F', of the door, after which the irons are folded on the top of the frame C. (See Fig. 4.)

The sash G may be of the order of a glazed window or blind, or both, as desired.

Vithin the door, at or near the bottom thereof, are secured U -shaped springs K, which act as buffers to receive the impact of the sash or frame when lowered into the door, preventing injury to the several parts.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters p Pal ent, is-

l. The carriage-door A,having side grooves, F', in combination with folding slotted irons B and frame C, having screws E, substantially as described.

2. The frame C having side screws, E, and bottom bar,G',the latter having an in ner molding, in combination with sliding sash G, fitted in said frame, slotted irons B, hinged to the body A, and body A, having side grooves, F', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A carriagedoor, in conibination'with a rising and falling frame fitted to said door, a rising and .falling sash fitted to said frame, and folding slotted irons hinged to said door and connected with said frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The recessed body A,having side grooves, F', and buffers K, secured in the bottom of the recess of said body, in combination with slotted irons B,hinged to said body, frame C,hav ing side screws working in said slots and grooves, and sash G, all of said parts being arranged, combined, and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
