UNITED STATES PATENT EFicE.
HENRY E. BAKER,
OF HULLS, OHIO.
STEAM-BOILER CLEANER.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,476, dated September 1, 18,85.
Application tiled J une 27, 1885.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, HENRY B. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hulls, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steanroiler Cleaners, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- 1 tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
The figure of the drawing is a representa1 tion of vertical sectional View.
Myinvention has relation to automatic or seliactin g water-agitators for steam-boilers and steamboiler cleaners combined; and it consists in the construction of parts, as will behereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to. the accompanying drawing, A desi gnates asteam-boiler,in which the dotted lines X X designate the water-line in boiler. B designates a horizontal pipe extending the entire length ot' the boiler, near the bottom of the same, and projecting th rough both heads of the boiler at B and B.
C C desiguatejam-mits on the pipe B,whicl1 arc screwed firmly against packing to make the joints tight where the pipe B goes th rough the boiler-heads and to hold the pipe B lirrnl y to its place. D designates a short curved pipe or, joints which enters the top of the boiler at F. A vertical glass sight-tube, Gr, connects the front projecting end of the pipe B with the short curved pipe D,suitab1e joints, I-I H H H, being employed for this pnrpose.
The end lof the pipe B that projects through the rear end or head ofthe boiler is provided with a stop cock or valve, J. Intermediate of the boiler-heads the horizontal pipe B is provided with a number of short downwardlycurved tubes or small pipes, K,whieh connect with the lower side of said pipe B and extend quite near to the bottom of the boiler. The lower ends of said pipes K are reduced onehalf in size.
In the rear boiler-head and quite near to the bottom of the boiler I provide a blow-off pipe, L, which is provided with a stop-cock or blow-off valve, M.
The two stopcocks N and N are only for a convenience to stop or shut off the steam (No model.)
above and the water below the glass tube G in case of accident in any way to said tube.
The use of the glass siglittube G is to see when the pipe B is clear of water and the device is at work.
Theoperation of the invent-ion is as follows: When it is desired to put it in operation, the stop-cock or blow-oft` valve .I is opened and the water is permitted to escape from the horizontal pipe B, and the pipe B will fill with steam from the top of the boiler at F, and then the stop-cock or blow-off valve .I is closed. Then from the pipe B the steam will passinto the pipes K to their discharge'points, where it will remain unt-il the cock M has been opened, when thcsuetion on the pipes K, caused by the iow ot water through the boiler to the discharge-pipe L,will cause the steam to discharge from said pipes K in the bottom of the boiler, which will aid materially in generating more steam, and at the same time move any sediment or dirt np to the blow-0H pipe L, where the dirt or sediment can be blown out through the blowbtf pipe L, thereby keeping the boiler clean all the time and aid materially in generating steam; hence a saving of fuel.
The number and the size ot' the small curved tubes or pipes K may be varied without departing from the character of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with a steam-boiler having the blow-off pipe with stop cock or valve in one head near the bottom, of the pipe B with curved tubes K and stop cock or Valve J, the short pipe D, and the sight-tube G, substanti ally as specified.
2. rIhe combination, with a steam -boiler having the blow-off with stop cock or valve, of the horizontal pipe B, extending entirely through the boiler and projecting at each end thereoand provided with small curved pipes K, the short curved pipe D, and the vertical tube connecting the pipes B and D, substantial] y as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY B. BAKER.
