To a-ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD REYNOLDS ROE, of Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved TypelVriter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of typewriters in which a type-disk and an indeX-circle and indicator are used; and the object of my invention is to simplify the construction and arrange the parts to operate more rapidly.
The invention consists in the combination, with a rocking frame, of a shaft journaled in the same and carrying a fixed cylinder pro vided with a spiral band, on one ed go of which steps are formed, and which fixed cylinder is surrounded by a hollow cylinder mounted loosely on the shaft and carrying a type-wheel adapted to revolve with the said cylinder and slide on the same. The loose cylinder is revolved on the shaft by means of suitable gearing from an indicatorarranged to revolve over an index held on the frame.
The invention also consists in other parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formin g part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved type-writer. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional ele vat-ion of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation 01" the same on the line a: :13, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the spacing device.
The base A, made of wood or metal, is pro vided with sides A, between and to the rear ends of which a frame, B, is pivoted to rock vertically. At about theiniddle of the frame a shaft. is journaled in the san1e,which shaft is provided at one end with aniiiled disk-handle, G.
On one end of the shaft is loosely mounted a sleeve, D, carrying a bevel cog-wheel, D, at one end, and having a head formed on the opposite end, which is screwed into one end of a cylinder, E, surrounding the shaft 0, and provided with a longitudinal slot, E. In the opposite end of the cylinder a head, E", is screwed, which is also mounted loosely on the shaft.
W'ithin the cylinder E a cylinder, F, is rigidly mounted on the shaft, and on its outer surface is secured a spiral band, F, having steps a in one edge, whereby a spiral line of steps or offsets, a, is formed on the face of the cylinder F. The distance between the said steps is to be according to the distance that the letters are to be separated.
A disk, G, having a wide hub, G, is loosely mounted on a sleeve on the cylinder E, and is provided with a tooth, G which passes through the longitudinal slot E into the cylinder E sufficiently to engage with the steps or offsets a in the spiral band F.
The disk G is provided in its rim with a groove, into which the type-band H, carrying the types H, is placed, so that the types project from the rim of the disk G, which typeband is made of rubber, and is held in the groove either by the spring-tension of the rubher or by any other suitable devices.
Rubber springs I are secured to hooks on the hub G and to hooks on the right-hand end of the cylinder E, and pull the disk G in the direction from the left to the right on the cylinder. The said rubber springs may be replaced by spiral springs or any other springs for pulling the disk G from left to right.
In the upper part of the frame a rod, 1, is held parallel with the shaft 0, and on the said rod two curved arms, 1 are held to swing vertically, in the lower ends of which arms an inking-roller, J, is pivoted, and above the roller Ja roller, J, is pivoted, the pivot of the roller J working in slots J" in the arms I, and the said roller J resting on the face of the types H. The upper parts of the arms 1 rest against the sides of the disk G which is bet-ween them, thus causing the arms 1" to slide on their supportingrod 1 with the disk G.
On the right-hand end of the top of the frame B the circular index K is fastened, which is provided at its outer edge and upon the upper surface with a slightlybeveled portion, K, on which as many characters are produced as there are types H on the type wheel or disk G, these characters being arranged in the same order as the type on the typewheel.
Inside of the ring of letters or characters a l which projects over the impression-bar and is ring of wedge-shaped teeth, K is arranged, one groove between two teeth corresponding to each character or letter on the index disk or wheel.
A shaft, L, is journaled in the middle of the index-disk and passes down through the same, and on the lower end of the said shaft is mounted a bevel cog-wheel, L, engaging with the bevel cog-wheel D on the end of the sleeve D.
In the upper forked end of the shaft L an arm or indicator, M, is pivoted, which is provided at its free end with a wedge-shaped tooth, M, adapted to be passed into the grooves between the teeth K.
Near the free end of the arm or indicator M a pin, N, is held to move toward or from the wheel K, and is pressed upward by a spring, N, contained in a cavity in the indicator-arm and surrounding the pin.
On its upper end the pin is provided with a head or button, N and on its inner end with a button, N having a tapered lower end.
' In the uppersurface ofthe index-wheel apertures b are provided, which are adapted to re ceive the beveled head N on the pin N, the said apertures or recesses being so arranged as to be at the ends of the teeth K, or between the recesses formed by the teeth. The said pin and the recesses are used only when upper andlower case type are provided on the typewheel, the upper and lower case type being arranged alternately 011 the rim of the typewheel in the same manner as the recesses between the teeth K, and the recesses or apertures b are arranged alternately on the indexwheel.
On the end of the shaft 0 a ratchet-wheel, O, is rigidly mounted, which is adapted to engagewith a pawl-tooth, O, held on the'upper end of a spring-strip, 0 held vertically adjustable by a screw, P, in a socket-piece, P, on the base-plate A of the type-writer. A check-screw, Q, is screwed'in the base A and projects upward from the same, upon which cheek-screw a bar on the free end of the rocking frame B strikes when the said frame is swung down. A spring, Q, held between the swinging frame and the base presses the said frame upward.
On the base A an impression-bar, R, is secured parallel with and below the cylinder E, which bar has a bevel on its top surface at each longitudinal edge, whereby a horizontal portion about the width of the type is formed on the middle of the top of the said impression-bar, so that the impression can be produced only on that part of the paper resting on the raised part of the impression-bar, and the other parts of the paper will be inclined downward, and will thus be out of the way of the type-wheel.
Directly in front of the impression-bar a shaft, S, is journaled in suitable standards, and on the same a wire frame, S, is secured,
bent to fit quite closely upon the same, and on the said frame a strip, S is secured in such a manner that its free edge rests against the front bevel of the impression-bar. A spring, S, surroundingone end of the shaft S,presses the frame S down upon the impression-bar. A handle-lever, S", projecting from the frame, serves to raise the same.
In two standards, T, in front of the shaft S, a U-shaped piece, T, is arranged to swing toward and from the impression-bar, the bottom of which piece is a short distance above the base A. Directly above the bottom crosspiece of the said U shaped piece T a shaft, U, is pivoted in the side pieces of the frame, and on the said shaft a trip, U, is secured, which is pressed upon the bottom cross-piece of the frame T by a spiral spring, U surrounding one end of the shaft U.
A handle-lever, V, projects from the strip U and serves to raise the same. The impression-bar R is preferably made of steel.
The operation is as follows: The strip U is raised by depressing the handle-lever V, and the sheet of paper is passed over the bottom cross-piece of the swinging frame T, and is held on the same by the swinging strip U, which is pressed upon the sheet by the spring U. The wire frame S is then raised and the sheet passed over the impression-bar, upon which it is pressed by the said frame S. To shift the paper the handle -lever S is depressed, thereby raising, the wire frame S,
and then the feeder or swinging frame T is swung in the direction toward the impressionbar, whereby the paper is moved the desired distance. Then the handle-lever S is released, thereby permitting the spring S to press the frame S on the impression-bar, whereby the paperis held on the impression-bar. Then the handle-lever V is depressed to raise the strip U and release the paper, and then the feeder T is swung to the front again. After each line of printing the paper is changed in this manner. Before printing, the type-whcelG is moved to the left until it is at the left-hand edge of the paper, and it is held inplace by turning the shaft 0 until one of the steps or offsets a engages with the tooth G on the hub of the type-wheel. The indicator M is moved until its end M is at the desired letter, whereby, by means of the beve1-cog wheels D and- L, the type-wheel is moved until the desired type is over the impression-bar. The shaft 0 is turned with the type-wheel and cylinder E when the said wheel is turned in one direction, as the cylinder E and the cylinder F, mounted rigidly on the shaft 0, are locked together by means of the stepped spiral strip or band F and the tooth G The frame B is then pressed downward,oausing the bottom type to make an impression on the sheet on the impression-bar, and at the same time the pawl-tooth O on the top of the spring 0 catches on one of the teeth of the ratchetwhecl O, and when the pressure on the frame next step or offset a.

The cylinder E is prevented from revolving, as its cog-wheel D engages with the cog-wheel L, which in turn is locked in place by the indicator M, the end of which is held between two teeth, K As the cylinder F revolves and the cylinder E is stationary, the step or notch c against which the tooth Gr rests is moved from the same, thus permitting the springs I to shift the typewheel from left to right until the tooth G strikes the The letters or characters are thus spaced properly.
In case upper and lower case type are used the pin N is used, and the indicator or arm M is turned until the pin N is over the desired recess 2), and then the type is shifted in such a manner that the corresponding lower-case type will make the corresponding impression.
The ink is distributed on the roller J, and by contact spreads ink on the roller J which by contact spreads it on the type. The screw Q can be adjusted to limit the movement of the swinging frame according to the impression desired, and the spring 0, carrying the pawltooth O, can also be adjusted according to the desired throw or swing of the frame B.
The rims of the heads of. the cylinder E are preferably milled to facilitate turning them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a typewriter, the combination, with a rocking frame, of a shaft journaled in the same, a cylinder mounted rigidly on the shaft and provided witha spiral row of offsets, a hollow cylinder surrounding the above-men tioned cylinder, a type-wheel sliding on the hollow cylinder and revolving with the same, a tooth projecting from the typewheel and engaging with the line of spiral offsets on the fixed cylinder on the shaft, and devices, substantially as described, for revolving the shaft the desired distance, substantially as herein shown and described;
2. In a type-writer, the combination, with a rocking frame, of a shaft journaled in the same, a hollow cylinder mounted loosely on the shaft, and a type-wheel mounted on the hollow cylinder .to slide on and revolve with the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a typewriter, the combination, with a rocking frame, of the shaft 0, j onrnaled in the same, the hollow cylinder E, mounted loosely on the shaft, and provided at one end with a beveled cogwheel, D, the cylinder F, mounted rigidly on the shaft with the hollow cylinder E and provided with a stepped spiral band, F, the type-wheel G, the tooth G", the shaft L, the bevel cog-wheel L, and an indicator connected with the shaft L, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a typewriter, the combination, with the cylinder F, of the spiral band F, secured on the same and having steps or offsets a, the cylinder E, surrounding the cylinder F and having the longitudinal slot E, the type-wheel G, and the tooth G projecting from the typewheel through the slot E and adapted to engage with the offsets or steps a, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a typewriter, the combination, with the rocking frame, of the shaft 0, the ratchetwhecl O, mounted on the same, the pawl spring 0*, engaging with the said ratchetwheel, the cylinder F, mounted on the shaft 0, the stepped spiral band F on the cylinder F, the cylinder E, surrounding the cylinder F, the springs I, and the type-wheel G, mounted on the cylinder E and provided with a tooth, G adapted to engage with the offsets or steps on the band F, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. In a type-writer, the combination, with a rocking frame, of a shaft carrying a cylinder on which a typewheel is mounted to slide and revolve, the spiral band F, a ratchet-wheel on the end of the shaft, the spring 0 held adj ustably in the socket 1?, and the pawl-tooth O on the upper end of the said spring, which tooth is adapted to engage with the teeth of the above-mentioned ratchet-wheel, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. In a typewriter, a paperfeeder consisting of the swinging frame T, the plate U, pivoted on the same, a spring for pressing the plate U on the bottom cross-piece of the swinging frame, and the handle V, substantially as herein shown and described.
