SKATE ROLLER.
No. 325,406. Patented Sept. 1, 1885.
LIT/V586 8 I l/VVE/VTUH $4; W
UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrca JOHN GREAGEN, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
SKATE-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION fo ming part of Letters Patent No. 325,406, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed January 12, 1885. (Modem To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J O}IN GREACEN, of the I town of Bloomfield, county OfESSQX, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Skate-Rollers and Rubher-Covered WVheels, of which the. following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a skate-roller that will be durable, and at the same time noiseless, as compared with the ordinary wooden skateroller, and also to produce a light and durable rubbercovered wheel for casters, carpet-sweepers, and other uses requiring such rubber-covered wheels.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved wheel; Fig. 2, a sectional view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the drawings.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, represents the rubber tread or tire; B, the metal ring or band; 0, the wooden, paper, or other filling; D, the bearing for axle to pass through.
In making my improved roller or wheel, I takea band or ring of any suitable metal and cover the outside of this with rubber to form the tread or tire. This rubber tread or tire A may be attached to the metal band B by vulcanization, or it may be first vulcanized and then stretched upon the metal band B. where it can be held in place by the use of cement or other suitable means. The core or filling O of the roller or wheel is then formed by forcing the center of wood or other suitable material into the metal band B. This core or filling may be provided with the bearing D for axle to pass through, either before or after it is forced into the metal band, and if desired the bearing may be hushed with metal or other anti-friction material. The core or filling can be made small enough to allow of a layer of elastic material between it and the inner surface of the metal bind, if desired, and it can be held in place by vulcanization, cement, or L any suitable means.
I do not confine myself to any particular mode of making my improved roller or wheel,
as there are various ways of making it. Neithor do I confine myself toa wooden core or filling for the rubber-covered metal ring or band, as there are difierent kinds of materialas paper, leather, an d other substances t hat can be used, if desired.
By the use of my improvemeuta skate-roller will be produced that will be comparatively noiseless, durable, and almost as light in weight as the ordinary wooden skate-roller; and this roller can be applied to the skate in the same manner as the wooden roller. Light and durable rubber-covered wheels can also be produced by its use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A skate-roller constructed of an inner or central filling of wood or similar material to form the body thereof, a metallic band fitted to and inclosing the body, and an elastic tire encircling the band, substantially as described.
