THOMAS R. DANIEL, OF PARKVILLE, MISSOURI.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,398, dated September 1, 1885.
(No model.)
I 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. DANIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkville, in the county of Platte and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car-couplings, the object being to provide the same with a hinged cap carrying a pivoted pin adapted to engage the link, and with spring-plates for holding the link in a horizontal position to engage the draw-head of the adjacent car.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of link, while a further object of the invention is to provide a carcou pling which shall be simple in its construction and thoroughly positive and effect ive in operation.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the combination, with a draw-head, of a hinged cap carrying a pivoted coupling p The invention further consists in the combination, with the drawhead, of springplates arranged upon the bottom of the same for the purpose of holding thelink in a horizontal position, and in the improved construction and detailed arrangement of parts, that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a car-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section of thesame, taken centrally through the draw-head, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the draw-head, which has the usual flaring mouth and link opening or passage. Upon the upper side of the draw-head is provided a recess or opening, a, adapted to close which is a hinged cap, B. In the forward end of the hinged cap B is provided a recess, 1;, in which is pivoted a pin, C, the upper end of which extends a slight distance above the cap, while its lower end is adapted to bear against a projection, 0, extending upwardly from the bottom of the draw-head, whereby the pin is held rigid against the projection when draft is ap plied, said pin having a recess or mortise on its outer side, at the lower end thereof, to receive the projection c. The hinged cap 13 is provided on its under side with a recess, and the pin 0 is cut away on its upper front side, from which it will be seen that if the link is moved far enough back in the draw-head, so
that the pin will clear the rear end of the same, it may be depressed to effect an uncoupling of the cars. It will be observed that in coupling the ears the link strikes the pin and forces itrearwardly, the end of the link passing the pin, when the same drops into the link, where it is held when draft is applied.
Hinged by its forward end to the lower front side of the draw-head is a plate, D, beneath the rear end of which are located spiral springs E.
Hinged by their forward ends to the inner upper side of the draw-head, on each side thereof, are plates E. Bearing against the upper sides of the rear ends of said plates are springs F.
G represents the link, which in this case is shown rectangular in form, and is provided at its corners with a projecting extension, H. These projecting extensions bear against the plates E, which support the link in a horizontal position, the plate D serving to guide the link, and giving when it is struck by the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a car coupling, the combination, with a draw-head having an opening on its upper side and a hinged cap adapted to close said opening, of a coupling-pin pivoted to said cap and having a recess or seat on its lower front side, and a projection extending from the bottom of the draw-head, as setforth.
2. The combination, with a draw-head, of the plate D, hinged at its forward end in the bottom thereof, a spring bearing against the under side of the plate, at the rear end there of, and the spring actuated plates E E, hinged at their forward ends to the inner upper side of the draw-head, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS It. DANIEL.
