CIRCULAR-TRAVELING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,386, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed December 4, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES BLIVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Circular-Traveling Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whiehit appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention has relation to circular-traveling devices; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the foundation bed of the circular track, which is laid in circular form.
13 B are the rails or bearings on which the wheels run. These rails are concentric, and the inner rail is laid slightly higher than the outer one, in order to cause the axles of the wheels of the running gear to take the level position.
0 0 represent the wheels of the circular runninggear. The outer wheel is of larger diameter than the inner wheel, the differ ence corresponding to the difference in height between the outer and inner tracks B B, so that the radial axles D, which connect the wheels 0 O, are level. The axles D are therefore in the horizontal plane, and the vertical axis of the track intersects this plane above the level of the track. The axles D are journalcd in bearings E, which are bolted to the timbers J of the truck, which extend around in parallel position, and lap at their joints, when the bearings are firmly bolted, thus forming a strong circular truck. To thistruck is firmly bolted, between the wheels, the circular bearing F, which may either be cogged to engage a toothed bevel-wheel or smoothed to engage a friction-wheel. The under or engaging surface of the bearing is inclined downward and inward according to the angle of the bevelwheel G, the shaft H of which is horizontal. and the angle of the bevel-wheel is regulated in accordance with the radius of the circular track, its upper and lower right-line elements meeting when projected at the vertical axis of the track below the intersection therewith of the planes of the axles of the wheels of the circular truck. The bevel-wheel may be turned by hand or by power. Upon the tops of the wheels 0 G, which are flanged, are the concentric inverted rails or bearings K K, which are bolted to the circular framing L, and form therewith the whirling or circling hearing or support, which is circularly propelled by the engagement of the wheels 0 0. To this support are bolted the chairs or seats which carry the passengers, and when the device is in operation the movement of the circular support or car is very rapid, being twice as fast as that of the wheel frame above which it circulates.
Having described this invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the lower circular rails or bearings, B B, concentrically arranged, of the radial axles D, the flanged wheels 0 G, of the different dimensions, the circular intermediate bearing, F, the bevelwheel which engages said intermediate bearing, and the upper whirling circle frame having inverted rails or bearings engaging the tops of the wheels 0 C, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a circular track and a circular truck thereon carrying a circular depending bearing, of a driving bevelwheel and a circular whirling frame engaging the tops of the truck-wheels and adapted to move with double the rapidity of the truck, substantially as specified.
