EDlVARD J. \VORCESTER, OFXVOBOESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE BURNHAM AND ASA GODDARD, OF SAME PLACE.
DRILL-GRINDING ATTACHMENT FOR DRlLLING-MACHINES.
QPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,373, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed January 30, 1884. (No model.)
To 0% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. \VOROES- man, a citizen of the United States. residing at lVorcester, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drill-Grinding Attachments for Drilling-Machines, of which the following is a specification, with acconr panying drawings, illustrating my invention, and in which- Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a drilling-machine with my drill-grinding apparatus attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 shows a top view of the grinding device; and Fig 4 is a detached and side view of the same with the drill -rest J removed.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The object of my invention is to provide a grinding apparatus so attached to a drilling machine as ordinarily used by blacksmiths and others, and suitably connected therewith, that the rotation of the balance-wheel of the drilling-machine will operate the grinding apparatus and enable workmen to resharpen their drills as required.
In Fig. 1, A indicates a port-ion of the frame work of the drillingmachine; B, the crank;
C, the balancewheel shaft driven by the gearing a b c, suitably held by the framework of the machine in the manner well known, and common to drilling-machines of this class. D is the balance-wheel, and E the drill-spindle, all arranged and operating in the usual and wellknown manner in this class of drillingmachines.
To the frame A is attached the plate F, having the lugs f f, which furnish bearings for the pintles g, by which the swinging plate G is hinged to the plate F. The swinging plate G has at its top edge the bearings d d, for the revolving arbor H, carrying the grindingwheel H. A thumb-screw, 6, passes through the plate G and rests against the plate F, and a spring, 8, Fig. 4, is placed between the plates F and G, and below the hinge, pressing the two plates apart.
Upon the arbor H is a friction-wheel, K, revolving in the same plane with the balancewheel D, and which may be brought against the edge of the balance-wheel by means of the thumb screw 6, acting against the plate F, and the motion of the balance wheel D thereby communicated to the arbor H and the grinding-wheel H. By retracting the. screw 6 the spring 3, in a state of compression, will draw the plate G, with the arbor H and frictionw-heel K. away from the balance-wheel D, thereby destroying the contact between the balance-wheel and the friction-wheel K.
To the plate F. I attach the drill-rest J, arranged at an angle to the plane of rotation of the grinding-wheel H, so as to hold the drill in the proper position to present its cutting- 6 edges to the face of the grinding-wheel and allow the same to be accurately ground.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the balance-wheel of a drilling-machine, ofa grinding apparatus consisting'of the arbor H, carrying a grindingwheel and the friction-wheel K, swi nging frame or plate G, holding the arbor H, screw 6, and spring suitably attached to the plate G, so as to act against the screw 6, all arranged as described. and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the balancewheel of a drilling-machine, of a drill-grinding apparatus consisting of swinging frame G, arbor H, carrying a grinding-wheel and a frictionwheel, having means, substantially as described, for bringing said friction-wheel into contact with the balance-wheel, and astationary drill-rest attached to the frame of the machine, formed of an angleiron set obliquely to the grinding-wheel, all combined and operating as described, and for the purpose set forth.
EDW ARD J. WORCESTER.
