THOMAS J. FENNELL, OF ELMIRA, NE YORK.
AlR-BLAST MECHANISM FOR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,330, dated September 1,1885.
Application filed April 28, 1865. (No model.)
furnace with a minimum expenditure of steam.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my device arranged in connection with the brick-work of a boilerfurnace. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same. one of the cone-frustums, and Fig. 4 is aview of the disk.
A represents the wall of the furnace. A ClSt-llOll or other metallic t-himble, B, may be embedded in the wall; but the thimble may be dispensed with, not being essential, but affording a convenient means for applying the blast. The inner end of the thimble should enter the ash pit a little below the grate-bar*. The outer end has a head with holes to receive the small ends of the thimbles.
O G are frustums of cones, open at each end, and entering the thimble B at their smaller ends, or, in the absence of the thimble, passing through the wall of the furnace. 'lhese frnstums are placed side by side, the inner ends inclined toward a common center, so that the proximate sides of the frustums will be about parallel.
D D D indicate three steampipes, furnished with nozzles d d d, each nozzle entering a short distance into the corresponding frustum, as shown in Fig. 1. Near the end of each nozzle there is a perforated disk, 6 e, alittle less in diameter than the frustum, so that there shall be an annular space between the edge of the disk and the frustum. The disk is secured to the nozzle for convenience in adjustment, and may be made adjustable on the nozzle, as by a screw-thread.
A supply-pipe, E, common to all the nozzles, receives steam from any convenient source 3 is a plan of i quantity.
The thimble or frustums may enter from the front or sides of the furnace, according to construction, and may be duplicated or multiplied in number for very large grates.
WVhen steam is admitted to the frustums through the nozzle (2, a film of air is drawn, as by an injector, around the disks 6, and, uniting with the steam, is carried forward into the furnace. The air-film completely surrounds the disks, and if the steam is under considerable pressure the air is drawn forward at high velocity and in great quantities. The currents of steam and air from the side frustums impinging on that from the central frustum cause the entire volume to move forward at high velocity, at the same time thoroughly commingling the air and steam.
The position of the nozzles in the frustums may be regulated by lengthening or shortening the nozzles.
By the above-described arrangement a very large quantity of air may be fed to a furnace with but small expenditure of steam, and very thorough combustion of fuel may be effected.
I claim- 1. In combination with the wall of a furnace, an injector-blower consisting of a frus tum having its smaller end communicating with the interior of the furnace, a steamnozzle entering the outer endof the frustum, and a plate of less diameter than the frustum surrounding said nozzle, as set forth.
2-. An injectoublowcr, consisting of a frustum, its front end communicating with the furnace, and similar frustums at each side thereof, all inclined to a common center, each frustum being provided with a steam-jet nozzle and surrounding disk, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the wall of a furnace, of a thimble embedded therein, a series of hollow frustums leading into said t-himble, a steamjetnozzle leading into each cone, and a disk of smaller diameter than the frustums surrounding the nozzle within each frustum, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
THOMAS J. FENNELL.
