UNITED STATES PATENT FMCE.
\VUNIBALD R. BOERNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MEANS FOR ATTACHING CUTTLE-BONE TO BIRD-CAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,313, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed October 1, 1884. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, UNIBALD R. Bone NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented acertain new and useful Improvementin Means for Attaching Guttle-Bonc to Bird-Cages, of which I do declare the following to be a specification.
My present invention has for its object to provide a very simple, cheap, and effective means for holding cuttle-bone upon the wires of bird-cages.
To this end the invention consists, primarily, in attaching directly to the back of a piece of cuttle-bone a friction-block of a size adapted to fitsnugly between the wires of a bird-cage, and by frictional contact hold the cnttle-bone securely in place.
My invention is especially well adapted for holding in place pieces of cuttle-bone which come in irregular sizes, and are not suited to fit within the usual metallic cups or holders. Great diflicnlty has been met with in preperly securing cuttle-bone to the wires of the cage, as the backs of the pieces are very hard and the bodies soft, so that if fitted between the wires theysoon become loosened as the soft bodies are eaten away and cannot be held in place. By attaching my improved friction-blocks to the backs of the cnttlebone pieces, as hereinafter shown, they can be securely held in place until the entire soft bod ies are consumed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cnttle-bone having my friction-block applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in transverse section.
A designates the piece of cuttle-bone, to which is attached, by cement or in other convenient manner, the friction-block 13,01 wood In Figs. 1 and 2 or other suitable material.
this block is shown as provided with one or more grooves,b,adaptcd to receive the adjacent cage-wires 0, between which the blocks lit in such manner as to be securely held in place by frictional contact.
The friction blocks may be grooved, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or may be of truncated cylindrical shape.
in order to secure the cuttlebone in place, it will be inserted within the cage, the friction-block being forced between adjacent wires in the desired position.
I am well aware that it has been heretofore proposed to attach cuttle bone to the wires of a bird'cage by means of a metallic clip which clasped the edges of the cuttle'bone, and was provided with a turn-button at its back for engagement with the wires of the cage; and I am also aware that in a prior patent granted to me it was proposed to hold the perches of a cage in position by means offrietion-blocks connected thereto and held between adjoining wires. To such matters of invention I do not wish to be understood as making claim, as my present invention is restricted to the provision of a new article of manufacture in the shape of a cnttle-bonc that can be readily attached to the cage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a cuttle-bone having attached directly to its back a block shaped on its sides to receive or fit between the wires of a bird-cage, substantially as described.
W UNIBALD R- BOERNER.
