BASKET SUPPORT FOR LADDERS.
No. 325,290. Patented Sept. 1, 1885.
Invemgm Unrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMY BARKER WARDVELL, OF ORMOND, FLORIDA.
BASKET-SUPPORT FOR LADDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,290, dated September 1, 1885.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMY BARKER ARD- WELL, of Ormond, in the county of Volusia, of the State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Basket Supports or Brackets for Ladders; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which.
Figure l is a perspective view of a ladder and bracket of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top view, Fig. 3 a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section,of such bracket.
The nature of my invention is defined in the claims hereinafter presented.
The said bracket is for supporting a basket for receiving fruit picked from a tree by a person while standing on a ladder resting against such tree.
In the said drawings, A represents the main or hooked portion or arm of the bracket, such portion having at its larger end a hook, c, and at its lesser end two hooks, b and 0, these latter hooks projecting in opposite directions from each other. 011 its front face the part A is provided with a shoulder or shoulders, (I c, for supporting it against one of the longitudinal barsf of a ladder, C, when the rear hook, a, is hooked on one of the rounds g of such ladder. From the rear face of the arm or portion A. there is extended a forked brace, B, whose prongs grasp the said round 9, and thereby aid in keeping the bracket in its proper position. This forked brace is held to the arm A by a screw, h, extending from such brace through a slot, i, made lengthwise in the part or arm A, a thumb-nut, 7:, being screwed on such screw. The said screw-nut and slot are to admit of the brace being moved and adjusted to carry it nearer to or farther from the hook a or the hooks b and c, as occasion may require.
To keep the brace from turning out of place, the next'adjacent bearing-surfaces of it and the port-ion A may be corrugated or fluted, so that the flutings of each may receive the corresponding projections of the other. The hook to and the prongs of the fork of the arm B, when they are to bear against the rounds of a ladder, I usually form with projections or ridges that will prevent them from readily slipping on the ladder-round lengthwise thereof.
The fruit-basket supporter or bracket made as described may be used against either of the bars of a ladder, and will usually stand in or about in a horizontal position when the ladder is inclined against a tree, the fruit-receiving basket being hung on the upper outer hook of the bracket.
Usually a fruit receptacle 0r basket is suspended from one of the rounds of the ladder while a person on such ladder may be employed in picking fruit from a tree against which the ladder may be resting. In most, if not all cases, more especially in picking oranges or lemons, where the foliage and thorns of the tree are thick, it becomes difficult when the basket is charged with fruit and hung on the inner side of the ladder to remove the basket from the ladder without doing injury to the tree or to the fruit-picker. If hung on the outer side of the ladder, or that next him, the basket is apt to be in his way. \Vith my bracket the basket or fruit receptacle is supported at such a distance from the ladder as to be out of the way of the person thereon, and very convenient for him to supply it with fruit or to remove such basket from or apply it to the bracket, as occasion may require.
I claim 1'. The ladder bracket or fruit receptacle supporter, substantially as described, composed of the arm A, provided with hooks at its ends and with a shoulder or shoulders to extend from one side of it, and of the furcated brace B, projecting from the other side of it, and arranged essentially as set forth.
2. The ladder-bracket composed of an arm, A, provided with hooks at its ends and with a shoulder or shoulders, d 6, extending from one side of it, and of a furcated brace, B, applied to the outer side of such arm and provided with means, as described, by which such brace may be adjusted and fastened on the arm into different positions relatively to the hooks thereof, all being essentially as represented.
