To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, FRIEDRICH HUNGER, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in reclining-chairs in which the back, arms, and arm-posts are hinged in the usual manner, with an extension-brace in the form of a sector secured to the arm and arm-post for holding the parts in the desired position, to the end that a strong, simple, and ornamental device is had at a small initial cost.

\Vith this object in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of my improved 2 chair, respectively showing the back in an upright and in an inclined position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in perspective of the extension-bar. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the plate G. Fig. 5 is an elevation in trans- 0 verse section on the line a: :r, Fig. 3.

A represents the chair-back, that is hinged to the rear portion of the seat B. G are the arm-posts, that are hinged to the side and front portions of the seat. D are the arms,

5 and are hinged to the arm-posts at a and to the back at a.

The parts E and F form an extensionbrace in the form of a sector, whose center is the axis of the hinge cl. The female part E has a longitudinal groove, E, in the upper face of which operates the male part F. The lower wall of the part E has a series of holes, 6, opening into the groove E, that receives the hook end f of the part F. The part E has a 5 slotted arm, E, that is secured to the post 0, as is also the lower end of the part E. The part F is pivoted at f to ears 9 of the plate G, the latter being secured to arm D. A hand-lever, F, integral with the part F, ex-

tends forward along under the arm D in position to be grasped by the fingers when the hand is resting 011 the arm D. By pressing against the under side of the lever F the part F is tilted, and the hook endf is withdrawn from the holes c, and, at the same time, with the hands in position grasping the arms D, the back of the chair may be brought to the desired inclination, when, by releasing the lever F, the hook end of the part F is depressed by gravity, and by engaging a hole, 6, locks the device and se cures the back. The metal parts are cast so that little fitting is required other than such finishing as may be desired for ornamentation.

By reason of the circular form of the ex tension-braces they add to rather than detract from the beauty of the chair, and by reason of the larger dimensions of the braces in a radial direction excessive strain on the hinges d is avoided.

What I claim is 1. In a reclining-chair, the combination,

with the chairback and arm-posts, respectively hinged to the seat and to the arms, 7 substantially as indicated, of extension-braces in the form of a sector, the Darts of the brace made male and female, the one portion of the brace being secured to the arm-post, and the other portion pivoted to the arm, the two parts of the brace having holes, projections, or depressions for mutually engagingthe pivoted parts of the brace, with a handlever arranged under the respective arms for operating the extension-bar, substantially as set forth.

2. In a reclining-chair, the combination, with a seat, back, arms, and arm-posts, the parts hinged to each other, substantially as indicated, of an extensionbrace in the form 0 of a scctor,having its center at the axis of the hinge d, the parts made male and female, forming a slip-joint, and provided, respect ively, with suitable holes, depressions, or projections for engaging each other, the one 5 part of the brace being secured to the armpost and the other portion of the brace being pivoted to the arm, a hand lever for elevating the pivoted part to disengage it for tion, in the presence of two witnesses,this 27th tilting the chair-back, and so arranged that day of June, 1885. the parts of the brace, when left free. will engage each other by means of. the gravity FRIEDRICH HUNGER 5 of the pivoted portions, substantially as set \Vitnesses:
