UNITED STATES,
MYBON HOLLEY PIPER, OF WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNMENTS, TO HIMSELF AND CHARLES S. BIRD, OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHING GRENADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,414, dated August 18, 1885.
Application filed June 1, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -MYRON HOLLEY PIPER,
of \Valpole, in the county of Norfolk, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire Extinguishing Grenades; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a front View, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of a fire-extinguishing grenade provided with my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
The grenade shown at A is a glass bottle charged with a composition or with materials or matters, such as, on breakage of the bottle, will generate carbonic-acid gas, or some other gas destructive of flame or fire. In the drawings, such grenade is represented as supported by and arranged within a wire frame or bail, B, having applied to it a mechanism for breaking the grenade in case of a fire taking place in proximity with it, and raising the temperature of the surrounding air sufficiently .to melt the fusible metal by which the mechanism is held from acting on the grenade. The said mechanism consists of a hammer, C, whose head a tapers like that of an ax, and is applied to a wire,- 1), extending downward toward and coiled around a cylindrical block, 0, within the bail fixed thereto, the said wire at its lower end being hooked upon the bail.
Near the hammer-head there is within and fixed to the bail a cross-piece, d, of metal, to which, by means of fusible metal m, an arm, 6, projecting from the hammer, is soldered, the said fusible metal being meltable at a temperature of about 140 Fahrenheit. The hammer is so arranged that, on melting the fusible metal, the spring shall throw the hammer ,0
merheld to the grenade-frame by a fusible 5o fastening, and thrown against the receptacle by a spring when the fastening melts. As far as I am aware, in such prior devices the re ceptacle itself moves when the fastening melts,
or else is unprotected by a frame, and liable to 5 accidental breakage.
In my device the bail B is a rigid frame, which holds the grenade A in one position, from which it is not moved; in fact, the grenade is a portion of the stationary structure,
the hammer C alone moving, and the bail B encompassing the grenade protects it.
'Having described my invention, what I claim is The' grenade A,.in combination with the bail B, the latter encompassing and support ing the former, said grenade being a portion of the stationary structure, with the bail, and the hammer C, consisting of a spring. b, and
head a, and the fusible fastening holding the hammer to the bail, whereby the grenade is protected from accidental breakage, and the hammer is the only movable part, as set forth.
MYRON HOLLEY PIPER.
