U. PATENT OFFICE.

Sled Brake.V i:
ALBERT S. CLARK, OF DRYDEN, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 1,347, dated May 2l, 1861.
SPECIFICATION.
'ro ALL .WnoM 1T MAY-GONCERN:
4 Be it known, that I, ALBERT SQCLARK, of' Dryden, inthe county of' Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented a new and improved Sled Brake; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description ofthe same,
reference being -had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, L
Fig. 1 is a plan view=or longitudinal elevation'.
The nature of my invention consists in providing` a. sled'or sleighwith a brake oi' such construction as to operate with great power, and at .the same time -to require but slight exertion from the operator 'to keep it ina most effectual postion.-
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a sled of ordinary construction. B is the lever for operating the i brake, which is secured to the rocking bar C by being' inserted in a hole madetherein. Throughjh'e rave 1J b a longitudinal slotis made forthe admission of' the lever B, and. to provide for it sufficient room to operate. C is a rocking bar, secured to the rave 6 b -by means of' suitable bearings, as at a. i
E is a link connected to the arm cA of the rocking bar C, and also tothe claw f, by the arm D. The arm D and claw f are made of one piece and ysecured to the runner G, in any proper manner that Will admit of' a f'ree play upon its fulcrum o.
s is a slot in the arm D, through which the' pin z' passes loosely, so as to admit of asliding motion, and is secured by riveting the ends upon each side of the link E. H isthe middle bearnof' the sled, with which 4the link-E comes in contact when operated, and serves as an eti'ectual means of keepin g down the claw f.
A:2 U. s. PATENT OFFICE, iee`1. -N0. i347.
O'Zarks Improved Sled Bra/ce.
In the above description it Willbe seen that by throwing forward the lever B, it
f actuates the claw f by the movement of the link E, Which operates in the slot s ofI the arm D, as an inclined plane, and is held down by sliding under the projecting beam H. The lever B is fitted into the rocking bar C, with a tapering-form, which admits of its being easily Withdrawn when logs or other heavy loading is required to be rolled on the sled, and replaced with facility when required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is-
'lhe combination of link E and beam H' with the slotted arm D, the Whole being constructed and arranged as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
ALBERT S. CLARK.
