Description
T. BURR. FRAGTURE APPARATUS.
No." 32,229. Patented Apr. 30, 186.1
UNITED STATES PATENT OFEFICE.
T. BURR, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNQR TO HIMS-ELF, L. BURB, S. W. MCCREA, L. H. BRINKERHOFE, AND PARCEL BRINKERHOFF, OF SAME PLACE.
FRACTURE APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,229fdated April 30, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it kno-wn that I, THEODORE BURR, of Battle Creek, inthe county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a` new and useful Improvement in Fracture Apparatus; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of ythe construction and operation of the same,
reference being had to the annexed draw-4 ings, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view.
AA, AA 'is the extension slides or splints, B, B, is the joint by which the extension and counter extension slats are attached.
C, C, C, C, is the screws, operating upon the braces by means of toggle nuts, forming joints, and connecting the upper end of the braces, to the nuts, the foot of the braces D, D, D, D, being secured to the splint A, A, A, A, by a pin, the splint being pro vided with a perforated flange for the purpose of adjusting the braces to any required length by means of a pin, the upper splint being provided with a socket E so as to fit the hip and pelvis, either-right or left to which the sccket E is firmly secured by a compress or bandage. The lower splint is provided with a foot piece F, to which the foot is secured, by means of gaiter or bandage, or otherwise, the joint B, B, being secured to the knee, also by bandages.
The apparatus being thus secured the operation is performed by (the braces being elevated on the screw) detaching one of the first, and so continue to the full capacity` of the apparatus.
The advantages of an apparatus thus constructed, is to ena-ble the patient to walk with a certain degree of facility while the broken limb is supported by an apparatus thus constructed and applied. The eXtension being in a right line obviates the imperforations of unskilful practitioners and removes the inconveniences of storing an outfit for each and every different length of limb subject to be broken.
I do not claim extension splints, neither do I claim toggle braces as my invention, but- That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The application of the toggle braces, D, operated upon a screw, in connection with extension splints, operating as described, and for the purpose set forth.
THEODORE BURR.
