This invention relates to an improvement in a grinding wheel refacer, which may be removably mounted upon a grinder, or made a permanent part thereof.
Various types of devices have been proposed and utilized for refacing abrasive wheels, with varying degrees of success. The refacer of the present invention represents an improvement in abrasive wheel refacers. More particularly, the subject refacer may be aflixed to a grinder, or be made a permanent part thereof. In either case, it will be available for immediate use when required, and when not in use, will be maintained in a position which will not interfere with the normal operation of the grinder. The refacer of the invention provides for control of depth of abrasive removal during refacing, or dressing, in a plane parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel or in a plane angularly disposed with respect to the axis of the grinding wheel, and without seriously disrupting the setting of the grinding wheel. In such manner, highly accurate and expeditious grinding operations are made possible by conveniently maintaining the grinding wheel surface clean and accurate in peripheral dimension.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improvement in grinding wheel refacers.
A more specific object is to provide a grinding wheel refacer which may be either removably affixed, or made a permanent part of a grinder.
Still another object it to provide a grinding wheel refacer which will be available for immediate use when required, and when not in use, will be maintained in a position which will not interfere with the normal operation of the grinder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grinding wheel refacer which may be used to obtain control depth of abrasive removal during refacing and without seriously disrupting the setting of the grinding wheel.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a grinding wheel refacer which may be used to provide either a fiat peripheral surface which is parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel, or a peripheral surface which is angulanly disposed with respect to the axis of the grinding wheel.
Another object is to produce accurate and expeditious grinding operations by conveniently maintaining the grinding wheel surface clean and accurate in peripheral dimension.
These and further objects and features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view, on reduced scale, of a grinding wheel refacer exemplary of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view, in partial section of a grinding wheel refacer illustrative of an embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 3 is a front elevational view of the same; and
FIG. 4 is a side elevation View, on a reduced scale, showing the grinding wheel refacer positioned for angular dressing of the grinding wheel.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral identifies an abrasive wheel refacer illustrative of an embodiment of the invention, which broadly includes a refacer bit head assembly 12 and a mounting head assemblage 14. The latter is adapted for removably aflixing the refacer 10 to a spindle housing 16 of a grinder (not shown), which includes a grinding wheel 18 of the abrasive type mounted upon the end of a spindle 20.
The mounting head assemblage 14, includes a body portion 21, a flat base portion 22 secured by means of threaded bolts 23 to a semi-circular base portion 24 adapted to fit upon the spindle housing 16. A semi-circular clamp piece 25 is arranged for fitting upon the spindle housing directly opposite to the semi-circular base portion 24, and is adapted for receipt of fastening means, such as cap screws 26, which extend through the base portion 24 and are in threaded engagement therewith. In such manner, the head assemblage 14, may be tightly secured to the spindle housing 16.
A threaded alignment bolt 28 having a lock nut 27 is extended through the base portion 24 to engage the spindle housing 16 for aligning the mounting head assemblage 14, in a manner to be described more fully hereinafter.
A shaft 29, supported in the body portion 21, has a pinion 30 mounted thereon. A lever 31 having a knob 32 is afiixed to a hub piece 33 secured to an end of the shaft 29, which lever is used for rotating the pinion in either direction. The body portion 21 is formed to provide a circular passageway extending therethroug-h in a horizontal direction. The circular passageway is adapted to slidingly receive a shaft 34 for longitudinal movement, which shaft has teeth, or rack 35 formed therein which mesh with the pinion 30. The bit head assembly 12 is secured to the forward end of the shaft 29.
A rectangular shaped gib 37 is secured by means of set screws and 76 in a correspondingly shaped aperture (not shown) formed in the top of the body portion A pair of set screws 77 and 78 having nuts 79 and 80, respectively, are extended through the gib 37 and engaged with a rectangular shaped slot 36 formed in the shaft 34. The set screws 77 and 78 are adjustable to bear upon the respective sides of the slot 36 to vertically align the bit head assembly 12 and to prevent the shaft 34 from rotating in the circular passageway. The set screws 77 and 78 also function to limit maximum movement of the shaft 34 in either direction, by engaging the ends of the slot 36.
The bit head assembly 12 has a body portion 40 which is secured to the end of the shaft 34. A sleeve 41 is positioned in the upper end thereof for rotation therein, which sleeve has a threaded interior for engaging a threaded portion of a refacing bit 42, which preferably is diamond tipped, or of a similar type used for refacing, or dressing, abrasive grinding wheels. A knurled knob 43 is afiiixed to the upper end of the sleeve 41 by means of a set screw 44, which is threadably received in the knob 43 and engaged with a notch (not shown) formed on the periphery of the sleeve 41. As best seen in FIG. 3, indicia in the form of a series of graduations 45 are inscribed on the peripheral surface of the knob 44, while a base mark 46 is provided on the front edge of the bit head body portion 40. A vertically extending groove 47 is provided on the surface of the bit 42, which is adapted to receive an end of a set screw 48 rotatably mounted in the body portion 40. The groove 47 and the set screw 48 prevent the bit 42 from rotating within the body portion 40.
It will be seen that by rotating the knob 43, the bit 42 may be moved vertically in either direction. The graduations 45 may be calibrated to indicate such movement of the bit in increments of one-thousandths of an inch, or any other measurement as desired.
The operation of the refacer 10 briefly, is as follows:
Assume that the grinding wheel 18 is to be refaced, the knob 43 is rotated so that the bit 42 is moved downwardly the desired, or necessary amount. The lever 31 is then moved counter-clockwise, as seen in FIG. 1, which causes forward movement of the bit head assembly 12 so that the tip of the bit 42 makes a pass or cut across the grinding Wheel 18. The amount, or depth of material removed from the wheel, will be equal to the amount that the bit tip has been moved downwardly prior to the refacing cut.
Before using the refa-cer '10 in the above described manner, the lock nut 27 is loosened, and the alignment bolt 28 is rotated to raise, or lower, the rear of the mounting head assemblage 14 to align the shaft 34 in a plane parallel with the axis of the grinding wheel 18. Aligning the mounting head assemblage 14 in this manner assures that the grinding wheel can be dressed with a flat peripheral surface which is parallel with the axis thereof.
Also, before using the grinding wheel in any given grinding operation the tip of the bit may be placed in alignment with the peripheral surface of the wheel. After the wheel is used a given length of time, and a refacing operation thereon is desired, the amount of downward movement of the bit may be used as a basis for readjusting the position of the grinding wheel after it has been refaced.
A flexible boot 50 enveloped about the shaft 34 has one of its ends adhesively bonded to the body portion 40 of the bit head assembly 12 and its other end adhesively bonded to the mounting head assemblage 14. The flexible boot 50 is extended, or retracted, along with the bit head assembly 12, as the latter is moved longitudinally so that the shaft 34, and the rack 35 formed therein, is protected against dirt and the like.
In FIG. 4, the refacer is shown having a pivotal base assemblage 55 including a fiat base member 56, a flat pivoting member 57, pivotally connected by a pivot pin 58 or the like to the forward end of the base member 56 and a pivoting grooved member 59 having elongated grooves 60 formed in opposite sides thereof pivotally connected by pivoting pins 61 or the like to the rearward end of the base member 56. The opposite end of the pivoting member 57 is notched so as to form a pair of arms and the grooved member 59 is movably secured the'rebetween by set screws 62.
The mounting head assemblage 14 is secured to the pivoting member 57 by means of threaded bolts 63 or the like, and the base member 56 is secured by threaded bolts n s 64 or the like to the semi-circular base portion 24 which ber 57, and hence the mounting head assemblage 14,
pivoted about pivot pin 58 to the desired angular position. After the mounting head assemblage 14 is positioned the lever 31 is then moved, as described above, to cause forthereabout which is secured by means of fastening means, such as screws 71 and 72, to the spindle housing 16. The guard 70 has an aperture 73 formed therein adjacent to the tip of the bit 42 so that the refacer 10 may be used to dress the peripheral surface of the grinding wheel 18, without the necessity of removing the guard 70.
While the refacer 10 has been shown as being removably atfixed to the spindle housing of a grinder, it is possible, if so desired, to make it a permanent part of the grinder, such as by forming the body portion 21 integral with the spindle housing 16.
It will thus be seen that the objects set forth above, among those made apparent from the preceding description, are efficiently obtained and, since certain changes may be made in the above construction without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Now that the invention has been described, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An accessory for attachment to a grinder for refacing a grinding wheel to provide a flat peripheral surface thereon comprising: a mounting head assemblage including a base portion adapted to fit upon a spindle supporting housing; a clamp for removably securing the base portion to, the spindle housing; a bit head assembly including a bit which is movable relative to the peripheral surface of the grinding wheel and a micrometer adjustment means for said refacing bit; a shaft having a rectangular shaped slot formed therein on its top side and .a rack formed therein afiixe-d at one end to the bit head assembly and supported for longitudinal movement within the mounting head assemblage; a rectangular shaped gib secured within a correspondingly shaped aperture formed in the top side of said mounting head assembly, said gib having a pair of set screws extended therethrough so as to engage said rectangular shaped slot formed in said shaft, said set screws being spaced from each other and adjustable to bear upon the respective longitudinal sides of said slot to vertically align said bit head assembly and to prevent said shaft from rotating within said mounting head assembly; said base portion including a threaded bolt extended through said base portion and engaged with said spindle support housing for aligning said rack in a plane parallel with the axis of said grinding wheel, and a lock nut for securing said bolt in a desired position; a tubular shaped flexible boot surrounding said shaft and secured to said bit ward movement of the bit head assembly 12 so that the tip of the bit 42 makes a pass or cut across the grinding wheel 18.
Prior to angularly positioning the mounting head assemblage 14, the shaft 34 is aligned in a plane parallel with the axis of the grinding wheel 18 by means of the alignment bolt 28, in the manner described above, so that the actual angular position of the mounting head housing corresponds to that indicated by the graduations on the grooved member 59.
It may therefore be noted that once the shaft 34 is aligned, the peripheral surface of the grinding wheel 18 can be easily dressed at any desired angle, merely by loosening two set screws, set screws 62, angularly positioning the mounting head assemblage by pivoting the same about pivot pin 58, and retightening the set screws to lock the assemblage 14 in the desired position.
The grinding wheel 18 may have'a shield 70 formed head assembly and to said mounting head assembly, said boot being extended and retracted as said bit head assembly is moved longitudinally; a pinion supported in the mounting head assemblage and meshed with said rack, said pinion being rotatable to cause movement of the shaft; and a lever for rotation of the pinion.

An accessory for attachment to a grinder for refacing a grinding wheel to provide a fiat peripheral surface thereon comprising: a base portion adapted to fit upon a spindle supporting housing; a clamp for removably securing the base portion to said spindle support housing; a pivot structure assemblage including a base member se cured to said base portion, a first arm pivotally secured at one end to said base member so as to be angularly positionable with respect'to said base member and a second arm pivotally secured to the other end of said base member and movably secured to said first arm for fixedly securing said first arm in an angular position; a mounting head assemblage secured to said support arm; a bit head assembly including a bit which is movable relative to the peripheral surface of the grinding wheel and a micrometer adjustment means for said refacing bit; a shaft having a rectangular shaped slot formed therein on its top side and a rack formed therein aflixed at one end to the bit head assembly and supported for longitudinal movement within the mounting head assemblage; a rectangular shaped gib secured within a correspondingly shaped aperture formed in the top side of said mounting head assembly, said gib having a pair of set screws extended therethrough so as to engage said rectangular shaped slot formed in said shaft, said set screws being spaced from each other and adjustable to bear upon the respective longitudinal sides of said slot to vertically align said bit head assembly and to prevent said shaft from rotating within said mounting head assembly; said base portion including a threaded bolt extended through said base portion and engaged with said spindle support housing for aligning said rack in a plane parallel with the axis of said grinding wheel, and a lock nut for securing said bolt in a desired position; a tubular shaped flexible boot surrounding said shaft and secured to said bit head assembly and to said mounting head assembly, said boot being extended and retracted as said bit head assembly is moved longitudinally; a pinion supported in the mounting head assemblage and meshed with said rack, said pinion being rotatable to cause movement of the shaft; and a lever for rotation of the pinion.

Claims (1)

1. AN ACCESSORY FOR ATTACHMENT TO A GRINDER FOR REFACING A GRINDING WHEEL TO PROVIDE A FLAT PERIPHERAL SURFACE THEREON COMPRISING: A MOUNTING HEAD ASEMBLAGE INCLUDING A BASE PORTION ADAPTED TO FIT UPON A SPINDLE SUPPORTING HOUSING; A CLAMP FOR REMOVABLY SECURING THE BASE PORTION TO THE SPINDLE HOUSING; A BIT HEAD ASSEMBLY INCLUDING A BIT WHICH IS MOVABLE RELATIVE TO THE PERIPHERAL SURFACE OF THE GRINDING WHEEL AND A MICROMETER ADJUSTMENT MEANS FOR SAID REFACING BIT; A SHAFT HAVING A RECTANGULAR SHAPED SLOT FORMED THEREIN ON ITS TOP SIDE AND A RACK FORMED THEREIN AFFIXED AT ONE END TO THE BIT HEAD ASSEMBLY AND SUPPORTED FOR LONGITUDINAL MOVEMENT WITNIN THE MOUNTING HEAD ASSEMBLAGE; A ECTANGULAR SHAPED GIB SECURED WITHIN A CORRESPONDINGLY SHAPED APERTURE FORMED IN THE TOP SIDE OF SAID MOUNTING HEAD ASSEMBLY, SAID GIB HAVING A PAIR OF SET SCREWS EXTENDED THERETHROUGH SO AS TO ENGAGE SAID RECTANGULAR SHAPED SLOT FORMED IN SAID SHAFT, SAID SET SCREWS BEING SPACED FROM EACH OTHER AND ADJUSTABLE TO BEAR UPON THE RESPECTIVE LONGITUDINAL SIDES OF SAID SLOT TO VERTICALLY ALIGN SAID BIT HEAD ASSEMBLY AND TO PREVENT SAID SHAFT FROM ROTATING WITHIN SAID MOUNTING HEAD ASSEMBLY; SAID BASE PORTION INCLUDING A THREADED BOLT EXTENDED THROUGH SAID BASE PORTION AND ENGAGED WITH SAID SPINDLE SUPPORT HOUSING FOR ALIGNING SAID RACK IN A PLANE PARALLEL WITH THE AXIS OF SAID GRINDING WHEEL, AND A LOCI NUT FOR SECURING SAID BOLT IN A DESIRED POSITIN; A TUBULAR SHAPED FLEXIBLE BOOT SURROUNDING SAID SHAFT AND SECURED TO SAID BIT HEAD ASSEMBLY AND TO SAID MOUNTING HEAD ASSEMBLY, SAID BOOT BEING EXTENDED AND RETRACTED AS SAID BIT HEAD ASSEMBLY IS MOVED LONGITUDINALLY; A PINION SUPPORTED IN THE MOUNTING HEAD ASSEMBLAGE AND MESHED WITH SAID RACK, SAID PINION BEING ROTATALE TO CAUSE MOVEMENT OF THE SHAFT; AND A LEVER FOR ROTATION OF THE PINION.
