SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,298, dated June 30, 1885.

Application filed March 25, 1855. (No model T0 aZZ whom it may concern:

'Be it known that I, Lnwrs HOWARD, of Vatkins, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Nail-Extractor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved implement for extracting nails and spikes easily and rapidly.

The invention consists in the combination,

with a claw-bar, of aspringbit secured to the.

under side of the same, a clevis pivoted to the bit, and a pin uniting the shank of the clevis between the bit and the under side of the bar.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved nail-extractor. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side view of the claw end of the same. Fig. 3 is a orosssectional view of the same directly behind the claw.

The bar Ais provided at its lower end with the claw B, of the usual construction. To the bottom edge of the bar A a spring-bit, G, is riveted a short distance from the claw, and the free end of the bit is rounded on its bot tom edge. A clevis, D, is pivoted to the bit 0 near its free .end, and between the bottom edge of the bar and the top edge of the bit a bolt or pin, E, connects the two shanks of the clevis. The claw B is passed under the head of the nail or spike, the spring-bit O resting against the bottom edge of the bar and the clevis D being inclined, as shown in Fig. 1. The spike or nail is partly withdrawn, and then the top of the clevis is moved toward the lower end of the bar by means of the foot, and brought into the position shown in Fig.2, whereby the claw is moved from the bit by the pin E. As the bit rests on the sleeper, board, 850., the claw is moved upward and pulls out the nail or spike.

Having thus described my invention,l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a claw-bar, of a spring-bit secured to the under side of the bar, and a clevis pivoted to the bit below the claw-bar and having between the same the pin E, serving to move the claw bar from the bit when the bit rests on some solid object, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with a claw-bar, of a springbit secured to the under side of the bar, the clevis D, pivoted to the bit, and a cross-pin uniting the shanks of the clevis between the bar and the bit, substantially as herein shown and described.
