(Cl. 85-32) This application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application, Serial No. 106,378, filed April 28, 1961, entitled Supports for Plumbing Fixtures, now abandoned.
This invention relates to plumbing and consists of a device to improve the installation of support bolts for a wall supported closet bowl or other wall supported fixtures.
One of the difiiculties most often encountered in installing wall supported closet bowls has been the provision of indentures or recesses in the wall surrounding the protruding support bolts. The indentures are necessary to provide space for the support bolt nuts and washers which retain the bowl in proper alignment with the wall.
Prior to my invention, the wall was either formed with no indentures, after which the workman would cut or chip out the wall tile, brick or mortar to the approximate shape required, or the workmen made a rough estimate of the size indenture needed and made an approximtae allowance for it when forming the wall. In either case, the indentures were not uniform and often too large or too small. Considerable waste of time and material was also involved, especially when tile, brick or mortar beyond the limits of the indenture was damaged by cutting or chipping. Further inconvenience resulted from mortar, dirt and rust forming on the support bolts during formation of the Wall.
I have been able to eliminate the foregoing and other disadvantages by the novel features of my invention. It is an object of my invention to provide a mortar recess nut and thread protector which will allow the forming of a uniform indenture in the wall surrounding a support bolt for a Wall supported closet bowl.
It is a further object of my invention to provide'a mortar recess nut and thread protector which will allow the forming of an indenture in the wall surrounding a support bolt with a minimum of time and effort.
Another object of my invention is to provide a mortar recess nut and thread protector which will allow the forming of an indenture in the wall surrounding a support bolt with a minimum of damage and wasted materials.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a mortar recess nut and thread protector which will allow the forming of an indenture in the wall surrounding a support bolt while protecting the threads of the support bolt from mortar, rust and corrosion during construction, and before the closet bowl is set.
An additional object of my invention is to provide a mortar recess nut and thread protector which will allow the forming of an indenture in the wall surrounding a support bolt without disturbing the mortar around the bolt and impairing the stability of the bolt.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following detailed explanation taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred embodimen of the principles of the invention has been selected for examplification.

The embodiment of my mortar recess nut 10 shown in FIG. 2 has a body 11 with an inside end 12 and an outside end 13. The shape of the body 11 will depend on the desired shape of the indenture 22. It has been found that a generally cylindrical shape with a moderate taper 14 toward the inside end 12, as shown, will afford the advantages of the invention. The taper 14 permits easy removal of the mortar recess nut 10 after the mortar 21 has set, since the body 11 is readily freed from the mortar once the mortar recess nut 10 is turned counterclockwise, as viewed in FIG. 1.
Substantially concentric with the outside circumference of the body 11, and running from the inside end 12 to the outside end 13, is a support bolt hole 15, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 7. The support bolt hole 15 is preferably threaded to correspond with the support bolt 9, on which it fits in adjustable relation.
Protruding from the outside end 13 of the body 11 is an extension 16 or wrench-receiving portion. The extension 16 may be part of the body 11 or it may be a separate element attached to the body at the outside end 13. The entension preferably is formed so as to permit attachment of a wrench at its outside circumference, which may be a hexagonal shape as illustrated in the drawings.
In communication with, and substantially concentric with, the support bolt hole 15 of the body 11 is a hole 17 which passes through the extension 16. This extension hole 17 is preferably threaded to correspond with the threaded end 19 of a hollow pipe thread protector 18. The thread protector 18 is of sufficient diameter to encompass the support bolt 9, the threads of which it is the thread protectors function to protect.
The embodiments of my invention shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 differ from the embodiment of FIG. 1 primarily in that the mortar recess nut 10 and the thread protector 18 are joined, preferably by welding, to form one integral device. The elements of the embodiments of FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 carry the same reference numerals as the corresponding elements of the embodiment of FIG. 1.
The integral mortar recess nut and thread protector device 25 of FIG. 3 is like the embodiment of FIG. 1 in that the support bolt hole 15 in its body 11 is threaded to screw the device 25 onto the support bolt 9. It is unlike the embodiment of FIG. 1 in that its integral construction ends the need for threads in the extension hole 17 and the need for external threads on the thread protector 18 for the purpose of attaching the thread protector 18 to the extension 16. The extension 16 of the mortar recess nut and thread protector 25 device is an integral part of its body 11.
The mortar recess nut and thread protector device 26 of FIG. 4 is similar to the mortar recess nut and thread protector device 25 except that the support bolt hole 15 in its body 11 is not threaded to screw the device 26 onto the support bolt 9. Instead, the support bolt hole 27 in its thread protector 18 is threaded to screw the device 26 onto the support bolt 9. Placement of the threads in the thread protector 18 is advantageous because it reduces the length of the support bolt 9 over which the mortar recess nut and thread protector device 26 must be turned in order to place it in position for use. Accordingly, it is faster to use than the other illustrated embodiments.
The mortar recess nut and thread protector device 28 of FIG. 5 does not include the extension 16. The entire length of its uniform cross-section support bolt hole 29 is threaded to screw the device 28 onto the support bolt 9. An extension 16 shaped to permit the attachment of a wrench to its outside circumference may be added to the mortar recess nut and thread protector device 28, if desired. Mortar recess nut and thread protector devices 25 and 26 may also, if preferred, be modified to eliminate the extensions 16.
The embodiment of my mortar recess nut and thread protector 18 shown in FIG. 2 is extremely easy to use. After the support bolts 9 of a wall supported closet bowl have been positioned, the wall which surrounds them is formed. One of my mortar recess nuts 10 is first turned onto each support bolt 9 until the edge 14a of the taper 14 is substantially even with the desired position of the outside surface 20a or peripheral plane of the wall 20 to be formed. The thread protector 18 is then slipped over the protruding end 9a of the support bolt 9 and its threaded end 19 engaged with the threaded extension hole 17 as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The wall 20 is then formed and the mortar 21 or plaster surrounding the body 11 of the mortar recess nut 10 is allowed to set. When the mortar is dry the mortar recess nut and thread protector are removed by turning them counterclockwise, as viewed in FIG. 1. Removal is extremely easy due to the taper 14 for the reasons previously mentioned. The resulting wall indenture 22 is shown in FIG. 6, which also illustrates the support bolt nut 23 and support bolt washer 24 positioned within the indenture 22 as in actual use. It should be noted that the use of my invention leaves the mortar 21 surrounding the support bolts undisturbed, with the result that the support bolts 9 are more stable.
As is apparent from the drawings and the description, the mortar recess nut 10 of the embodiments of FIGS. 1 and 2 may be used either with or without the thread protector 18, as desired.
Except for the elimination of the step of screwing the thread protector 18 into engagement with the extension 16, the method of using the embodiments of FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 is the same as the method of using the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2.
It is understood that the present invention is not confined to the particular construction and arrangement of parts herein illustrated and described, but embraces all such modified forms thereof as may come within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A mortar recess nut and thread protector for a support bolt comprising, a body having an inside end and an outside end and having an outer circumference tapered to a smaller diameter at said inside end, a support bolt hole extending through said body from said inside end to said outside end, said support bolt hole being threaded to receive said support bolt in adjustable relation, an extension of said body at said outside end, a threaded hole through said extension in communication with and of larger diameter than said support bolt hole, a hollow pipe thread protector of such dimensions as to encompass a substantial length of said support bolt in spaced relation, said thread protector being threaded at one end to permit engagement with said extension hole.
2. The invention described in claim 1 wherein said extension is formed so as to permit attachment of a wrench at its outside circumference.
3. In combination, a support bolt for a wall supported closet bowl, a mortar recess nut having a body with an inside end and an outer circumference tapered to a smaller diameter at said inside end, a support bolt hole extending through said body from said inside end to said outside end, said support bolt hole being threaded to receive said support bolt in adjustable relation, an extension of said body at said outside end, a threaded hole through said extension in communication with and of larger diameter than said support bolt hole, said support bolt hole and said threaded hole adapted to receive said support bolt continuously therethrough, a hollow pipe thread protector of such dimensions as to encompass a substantial length of said support bolt in protective relation, said thread protector having a threaded end engaged with said threaded extension hole.
4. The invention described in claim 3 wherein said extension is formed so as to permit attachment of 'a wrench at its outside circumference.
5. The combination of a mortar recess nut and thread protector for a support bolt which comprises, a recess nut body with an inside end and an outside end, said body having an outer circumference which is tapered inwardly at said inside end, and having a threaded support bolt hole extending therethrough from said inside end to said outside end and being adapted to threadedly engage said support bolt, an extension of said body at said outside end, said body extension having a threaded hole extending therethrough substantially concentric with and of substantially larger diameter than said support bolt hole, threaded pipe of sufiicient dimensions to encompass a substantial length of said support bolt in spaced relation, said threaded pipe being adapted to engage said extension hole in threaded relation, said body extension being further adapted for engagement by wrench means whereby to turn said recess nut on said support bolt.
6. The combination comprising:
(a) a threaded support bolt extending outwardly beyond a peripheral plane of a wall to be formed,
(b) a unitary mortar recess nut and thread protector threadedly engaged on said support bolt in removable relation,
(c) said nut and thread protector having an end portion tapered radially inwardly in the direction of the Wall to be formed, a cylindrical portion adjacent said end portion, a portion having wrench-engaging means thereon adjacent said cylindrical portion, a tubular sleeve extending from the wrenching portion to define a thread protector portion, and a support bolt hole extending through each of said portions to encompass substantially the entire length of said support bolt extending beyond said peripheral plane and protect said bolt from foreign materials.
(d) internal threads extending along at least a portion of the length of said hole in threaded engagement with said support bolt, and
(e) the junction between said inwardly tapered portion of said nut and said cylindrical portion lying substantially in the peripheral plane of the said wall to be formed such that upon formation of said wall said inwardly tapered portion will define a tapered indenture in said wall for receiving a nut threadedly engaged on said support bolt.
7. The invention described in claim 6 wherein at least that part of said support bolt hole extending through said thread protector portion is unthreaded to encompass said support bolt in spaced relation.

Claims (1)
- 6. THE COMBINATION COMPRISING: (A) A THREADED SUPPORT BOLT EXTENDING OUTWARDLY BEYOND A PERIPHERAL PLANE OF A WALL TO BE FORMED, (B) A UNITARY MORTAR RECESS NUT AND THREAD PROTECTOR THREADEDLY ENGAGED ON SAID SUPPORT BOLT IN REMOVABLE RELATION, (C) SAID NUT AND THREAD PROTECTOR HAVING AN END PORTION TAPERED RADIALLY INWARDLY IN THE DIRECTION OF THE WALL TO BE FORMED, A CYLINDRICAL PORTION ADJACENT SAID END PORTION, A PORTION HAVING WRENCH-ENGAGING THEREON ADJACENT SAID CYLINDRICAL PORTION A TUBULAR SLEEVE EXTENDING FROM THE WRENCHING PORTION TO DEFINE A THREAD PROTECTOR PORTION, AND A SUPPORT BOLT HOLE EXTENDING THROUGH EACH OF SID PORTIONS TO ENCOMPASS SUBSTANTIALLY THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF SAID SUPPORT BOLT EXTENDING BEYOND SAID PERIPHERAL PLANE AND PROTECT SAID BOLT FROM FOREIGN MATERIALS. (D) INTERNAL THREADS EXTENDING ALONG AT LEAST A PORTION OF THE LENGTH OF SAID HOLE IN THREADED ENGAGEMENT WITH SAID SUPPORT BOLT, AND (E) THE JUNCTION BETWEEN SAID INWARDLY TAPERED PORTION OF SAID NUT AND SAID CYLINDRICAL PORTION LYING SUBSTANTIALLY IN THE PERIPHERAL PLANE OF THE SAID WALL TO BE FORMED SUCH TAHT UPON FROMATION OF SAID WALL SAID INWARDLY TAPERED PORTION WILL DEFINE A TAPERED INDENTURE IN SAID WALL FOR RECEIVING A NUT THREADEDLY ENGAGED ON SAID SUPPORT BOLT.
