Description

(No Model.) E. M. JOHNSON.
WIRE DRAWING DIE. No 321,033. Patented June 30, 1885.
PETERS. Phutbutmgn ber. wamzn mn. D. 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS M. JOHNSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WIRE-DRAWING DIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.321,033, dated June 30, 1885.
Application filed March 17, 185-3.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIAS M. JOHNSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVire-Dies, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In making die-plates for drawing wire it has heretofore been customary to drill a number of holes in such die-holder, so that as one hole became toolarge the wire could be drawn through another hole, the dies being perma nent in the die-holder. By my improvement I am enabled to avoid, the destruction or remaking of the entire wireplate when the holes have become too large, and this I accomplish by fitting in the die-holder a removable die, whereby when the hole in one die has become too large another may be readily substituted therefor.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 represents a plan view of my contrivance; Fig. 2 a section showing the plate in position; Fig. 3, the die-plate, and Fig. 4 the equalizing elastic cushion.
My apparatus consists, generally, of a dieholder, A, in which is madea cavity or chamler, F, to receive the parts B, O, and D.
0 represents the die-plate, consisting of a solid block of steel having a perforation through the center thereof, and preferably rests upon the elastic cushion D, thereby equalizing its position when the wire is drawn.
B represents the tallow-cup, which serves,
likewise,to hold the plate 0 in position. This tallowcup is lockedin the chamber by screwclips E E.
(No model The operation is readily understood. The wire is drawn, as usual, through the die 0, and, if desired, the tallow or other lubricant may be placed in the cup B.
I am aware that it has been proposed to make tools for drawing soft-metal tubes with holders having conical openings, and conical thimbles therein of metal so thin that the draw opening is greater in diameter than the thickness of the metal. Myinvention differs from thisin having a block much thicker than the diameter of the opening, so that there can be no possible springin the same, and in providing it with a fiat side by making it rectan-. gular, so that it cannot be set out of true in the holder. I therefore do not claim, broadly, a holder having a socket for a detachable perforated piece; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in a wire-drawing tool, of a holder, A, having an opening formed, as set forth, to receive a rectangular steel block fitting said opening, and having a central draw-orifice, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the die-holder A, die-plate O, and tallow-cup B, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the die-holder A, tallow-cup B, die-plate O, and elastic cushion D, snbstantiall y as described.
ELIAS M. JOHNSON.
