L965 5 u WW; 0% M MC 2 E E 0 7 M v w A 6 United States Patent 3,208,807 STURAGE CABINET Clair A. Becker, Les Angeles, Calif, assignor to Barbara E. Myers, Long Beach, Calif. Filed Aug. 23, 1963, Set. No. 304,048 3 Claims. ((11. 312200) This invention relates to a storage cabinet and more particularly to a device which is preferably termed a camp kitchen which is foldable for transportation, but openable to form a storage cabinet for food, utensils such as dishes, cups and the like, and which can form a shield from the wind so that a fire or stove may be placed therein and shielded from the elements.
These and other objects, features and advantages will be apparent from the annexed specification in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective elevation of the device in its closed or folded position;
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 with the device in fully open position;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective elevation of the device in its expanded form;
FIGURE 4 is a section taken along the line 44 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 5 is a perspective elevation partly in exploded form of the device shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 6 is a view similar to FIGURE 4 showing shelves in their upward position;
FIGURE 7 is a section taken along the line 7-7 of FIGURE 5.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the device is shown as including a back member 10, two side members 11 and 12 hinged as at 13 to the back member and foldable across the front of the back member to form a first front closure. The back member has hinged thereto adjacent its top a folding top 14 and two folding shelves 15 and 16 as most particularly shown in FIGURE 4. Each of the side members 11 and 12 carries a plurality of racks 17. Each rack 17 includes a bottom member 18 and a U-shaped front member 19 spaced from the bottom member 17 and each bottom member 18 is provided with a hole 20. Removable rods 21 having downwardly turned ends 22 are provided for extending across between the two sides 11 and 12 when the sides are in open position, the downwardly extending ends 22 fitting in the holes 20. Similar holes 23 are provided in the top members of the side members 11 and 12 for receiving one of the rods 21 for supporting the top shelf 14. A pair of panels 24 are provided, one hinged as at 25 to each of the side members 12 and 11. When the device is closed up panels 24 extend across the front of the side members 12 and 11 and when the device is in the fully expanded position as shown in FIGURE 3 the front panels 24 extend across the front and fully enclose the structure.
A U-shaped handle 26 is provided extending through holes in the top of the back member and having collars 27 which support one end of coil springs 28 to mount the handle for vertical movement with respect to the back member. Latch means 30 and catches 29 are provided, the latches being mounted on the back member and the catches 29 being mounted one each on the side members 12 and 11 for locking the device in closed position for transportation.
While there has been described what at present is considered the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is intended to cover herein all such changes and modifications as come within the true spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the type described comprising: a back member; two side members hinged to said back member and foldable over said back member to constitute a front closure; racks carried by said side members; a plurality of shelves hinged to said back member and extending substantially vertically when said device is closed, and removable means for supporting each said shelf on both said side members in substantially horizontal relation and rigidly interconnecting said two side members when said side members are in open position, closure panels hinged to said side members, said closure panels being adapted to extend across between said side members when said side members are in open position to form a second closure for said device.
2. A device of the type described comprising: a back member; two side members hinged to said back member and foldable over said back member to constitute a front closure; racks carried by said side members; a plurality of shelves hinged to said back member and extending substantially vertically when said device is closed, and removable means for supporting each said shelf on both said side members in substantially horizontal relation and rigidly interconnecting said two side members when said side members are in open position, one of said shelves being hinged to said back member adjacent the top thereof to form a top cover for said device when in open position, closure panels hinged to said side members, said closure panels selectively movable to a position for extending across between said side members when said side members are in open position to form a second closure for said device.
3. In an expandable storage cabinet, the combination of: a back member; tWo side members hinged to said back member and foldable over said back member to comprise a front closure; vertically spaced racks carried by said side members; a plurality of shelves hinged to said back member along a horizontal axis and extending substantially vertically between said back member and said two side members when the cabinet is closed, each said shelf hinged at substantially the same level as a said rack in each of said side members; another shelf hinged to said back member adjacent the top thereof for forming a top cover for said cabinet in the open position; selectively removable means associated with each said shelf for comprising the sole means for both supporting each said shelf on both said side members in substantially horizontal relation and rigidly interconnecting said two side members when said side members are in the open position; and a closure panel hinged to each said side member along the edge remote from the hinged connection to said back member, said closure panels being selectively movable between an open position and a position extending across the space between said two side members to form a second closure for said cabinet when said side members are in the open position.
