Be it known that l, EDGAR F. BELDING, of Fitchburg, county of lVoicester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Leather-Skiving Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
' This invention has for its object to simplify the construction of that class of skiving-machines more expressly adapted for skiving the edges of shoe tips, counters, and box-toes.

My invention consists in a noveladj ustable guide for holding the pile of blanks; also in the combination,with a feed-roll and knife and a movable support for the blanks to be skived, of a vibrating or reciprocating blank-feeder adapted to successively present the blanks to be skived to the skiving-knife; also in a conical annularly-grooved feed-roll and movable support for the blank, combinedwith a skivjug-knife and a series of vertically movable spring-held pivoted pressers, to operate sub stantially as will be described.

The frame-work A,of suitable shape to sustain the working parts, has bearings for-the reception of the-main shaft A,provided with usual fast and loose pulleys, A A. The shaft A has an attached bevel-gear,A which engages a bevel-gear, A fast on the lower The shaft A,
next above the gear A has firmly attached to it the rotating bed B, the hub 13 of which is shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3. The bed has attached to it by screws 2, or otherwise, one or more moldsections, B containing cavities or depressions 3, of a shape to correspond, substantially,with that portion of the blank which is to be skived, the cavity herein shown being of suitable shape for a shoe-tip. These moldsections B are made removable from the rotating bed in order that sections having recesses of the proper shape may be readily ap plied to the said bed. The central part of the rotating plate B is cut away at its upper side sufficiently to receive a cam-block, D, which is attached to the plate B by one or more screws 4. This canrblock D has a camgroove, 5, and at its periphery I have provided the said block with a gear, D, the said gear cngaging the teeth of a bevel gear, a, attached to the shaft a of the conical feed-roll E, the surface of the latter being provided with a series of annular grooves, 6, the annular projections left at the surface of the said roll being preferably serrated to better engage and feed the blanks. The shaft a is mounted in cars a of an arc-shaped head, a fitted to slide in an arc-shaped guide, a, the shank a of which is fitted to slide up and down in the overhanging arm A of the framework A. The shank a is held in place in the guide by a cap-plate, I), having a shank, b, which is attached to the frame-work by a bolt, b. (Shown in Fig. 1.) At the upper end of shank a is a pin, 0, which, surrounded by a spiral spring, 0', enters a central hole in the hollow screw 0, held in an ear, c of the frame part A the lower end of the said screw bearing against the upper end of the spring 0, the adjustment of the said screw causing the said spring to act with more or less force upon the shank of, and consequently regulate the extent of the yielding pressure of the feed-roll E on the blank, the point to which the said rel-l may descend being determined by an adjustable stop, 0". The rigid part A of the frame-work has ears 7 7, which at their lower end serve as bearings for a fulcrum-pin, 8, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) on which is mounted the series of presser-feet f, the latter at their upper ends being bored or slotted to receive the inner ends of the adjustable screw-rods f each surrounded by a spiral sprin f each spring acting upon the upper end of a separate presser foot. v The lower ends of the presser-feet, made L-shaped, are-extended tering its own annular groove in the said feed roll. It will be noticed that the shape of the under-the feed-roll E, a part of each foot enpresser-feet and the location of the fulcrumrod 8 is such with relation to the periphery of the feed-roll as to prevent the contact with the said roll of any part of the said presserfeet above the said fulcrum-pin when the arcshaped head a is being adjusted in the arcshaped guide a, and it will also be understood that the parts of the presser-feet below the feed-roll and resting on the blanks being car ried under the feet press equally'and uniformly on the said blanks in all positions of the feed-roll. The point to which a presserfoot may descend underthe action of its adj ustable spring f is determined by an adj usting device composed of an QCCGIllJIiCTOd, r, having its projecting end squared or otherwise shaped to be engaged by a wrench or key. Thejournals or ends of the rod r are mounted in the ears 7 7 of the rigid part A", and extend from one to the otherear, to serve as a stop for the upper arms of the presserfeet in opposition to the spring f. The overhanging arm A supports a rock shaft, G, which is kept from dropping by the nut G. The shaft G, extended through washers g g,
has at its lower end a hub provided with two arms, G G, the arm G2 being joined byscrew 38 to a slotted plate, h, having for its fulcrum the shaft A. The slot 10 (see Fig. 6) in the plate h receives in it a screw, 12, attached to the shank h, pivoted loosely on the shaft A, the said shank having attached to it the blankcarrierh (See Fig. 7.) The screw 12 has at its upper end a nut, which may be loosened to permit the screw to be placed at the proper place in the slot 10, to adjust the throw of the carrier h the said nut being then screwed down to cause the plate h and the shank h to move in unison. The arm G3 of the hub of the rock-shaft G has at its end a roller or other stud, which enters the cam groove 5 of the cam D, the rotation of the latter causing the carrier h to be vibrated or reciprocated, the adjustment between the plate It and the shank h of the carrier h enabling the carrier to operate and engage the pointed rear end of a blank next to be skived just as the center of the concavity or recess 3 in the mold-section B arrives under the .center of the pile of blanks, the throw of the carrier h being necessarily adjusted to accommodate different lengths of" blanks. The blanks to be skived are cut out to proper shape and placed in a pile, with their ends between uprights or rods of the fingersmm'm m of the blank-holder H, (shown detached in Fig. 2,) the lowermost blank of the pile of blanks resting'directlyupon the rotating bed B, which is made to travel under the pile of blanks. The screw 29 permits the fingers m m to be separated one from the other to accommodate them to the width of the point of the blank. The fingers m m are adjustable in like manner by screw 17. The screw 31 permits the bracket 21 to be adjusted vertically, to place the lower ends of the upright rods of the fingers m m as close to the bed B as possible without touching it, so that the said rods will prevent the lowermost blank of the pile from being carried forward with the bed, except just at the proper time, when the rods are lifted sufficiently above the bed B at'the proper distance apart for the length of the blank. The front end of the carrier h is The 1 recessed (see Figs. 1 and 7) to embrace the point of the lowermost blank of the pile of blanks just as the recess'3 coincides in position with the blank, and as the carrier starts to carry the blank forward with the bed B, the blank being in the concavity 3, the cam 33 lifts the plate m and permits the leading corner of the blank to pass therods of the fingers m m. The carrier continues to act upon the rear corner of the blank until the leading corner thereof is entered under and caught by the feeding-roll E,when the carrier is thrown back by the cam 5. The notch in the carrier h is shaped to embrace the corner and part of the body of the blank, so that the latter is prevented from being displaced sidewise. The skiving-knife a is attached by screws n n to a bridge-piece, n held in place by the screws 11. MP, the beveled edge of the knife being presented diagonally to the blank,to skive all that part of the same outside'of the concavity 3;
I claim- 1. In a skiving-machine, a movable bed and attached mold-section, and a skiving-knife,
and an annularly-grooved conical feed-roller, and the arc-shaped head, and theverticallymovable guide in which it is adjustable, com-' bined with a series of spring-actuated presserfeet, f, pivoted upon a rod, 8, parallel with the top of the bed, the lower ends of the said presser-feet being extended under the feedroller and in its grooves, the vertical parts of the pressers above the fulcrum-rod 8 being entirely outside theqieriphery of and free from the feed-roller, substantially as described.

The movable bed, its attached mold-sec tion, the conical feed-roller, the arc-shaped head provided with ears to hold the'shaft of IIC the feed-roll, the arc-shaped guide in which the said head is made adjustable, and a skiving-knif'e, combined with a series of pressers extended under the feed-roll, substantially as described.
3. In a skiving machine, an annularlygrooved feed-roll and a series of spring-actuated pressers,f, combined with an eccentric rod, g, to adjust the position to which the said pressers may descend, substantially as described.
4. In a skiving machine, a movable bed, combined with a blank-holder having two sets of fingers provided with rods or standards to act upon the edges of the forms to be skived, substantially as described.
5. In a skiving-machine, a movable bed,B, and a pivoted blankholder having adjustable fingers provided with rods, combined with a cam or projection to turn the said holder on its pivot and raise the rods when the feeding end of the blank is to be pushed out from the holder, substantially as described.
6. In a skiving machine, a blank holder composed of a plate, m, adjustable brackets 19 and 22, and adjustable fingers m m m m to operate substantially as described.
7. I11 a skiving-machine, a bed to receive upon it the article to be skived and a camplate, D, combined with the V111 rating or reciprocating blankcarrier and with n. eaiis, substantially as described, to operate the said blank-carrier.
8. The bed and blank-holder,combined with the vibrating blank-carrier, slotted or recessed at its acting end to embrace the rear end of the blank, substantially as described.

In a skiving-machine, the bed, its moldsection. and the cam D, combined with the arms G G, link G adjustable plate It, andthe vibrating carrier W, the shank of the latter being provided with a set-screw to enter the slot of the plate It and adjust the throw of the said carrier. substantially as described.
10. The blank-holder, the mold-section,and the independent vibrating carrier, combined with a feed'roll and presser-feet to grasp the leading end of the blank to be skivcd as the latter is presented to the said feed-roller and pressers by the carrier and mold-section, substantially as described.
