UNiTsn STATES ATENT WEGE@ GEORGE HILL DIOKSON, OF EAST NEV YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-ACTUATED VALVE.
PECIFICATICN forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,965, dated June 16, 1885.
Application tiled January 22, 1885. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE H. DioxsoN, of East New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a Steam- Actuated Valve, of which the following is a specication.
' The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l of the drawings is a section through a cylinder and its steam-chest. Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to that of Fig. l, for the purpose of exhibiting plainly the connection of the exhaust-chamber with the spaces back of the chest-valves. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views, showing the peculiarities of construction in the intermediate valve.
In the drawings, A represents a steam-chest having the live-steam inlet D, and preferably bored cylindrically.
B B2 are piston-valves operated by the live steam, made hollow at b, to pass the steam down to ports b b', which connect alternately With the ports ee of the main cylinder E. These valves B B2 have also recesses b b2, which connect the ports c e with the exhaustchannelsff of the exhaust-chamber F, and are notched at b3b2 on their outer ends, so as to allow the spaces da and steam-ways I2 I3 to register, for feeding exhaust-steam behind 'the pistons, so as to cushion them at the end of their stroke.
H represents the auxiliary or intermediate valve, which is at the upper part transversely excised, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and open at the sides for the purpose of allowing a free passage of the steam from inlet D to the cavities of the valves B' B2, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. Valve H has the channels I I, which connect the channels I2 I with the exhaust-chamber F F, having one part in the bottom of chest and the other in the bottom of valve H.
Grepresents a toe, which is connected with the piston, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings, so that when the piston C reaches the end of its stroke the toe G is vibrated in the recess F, which forms part of the exhaust-chamber, and causes the valve H to move in a direction opposite to that ofthe main piston C, so as to make the valves B B2 cover the ports e e ofthe main cylinder, thus confining enough steam in front of piston O to cushion it. At the the same time the channel I2 registers with exhaust and space a, while channel l:i registers with the other space, a, and the livesteam space d, so as to admit the steam necessary to give a return-stroke to the Valves B B2, which, being rigidly attached together by rod K, must move simultaneously, while the valve H being loose on said rod, the latter moves through it.
rlhus it will be perceived that I both cushion the main and the valve pistons by the singie movement of the middle valve, which actuates, but is never actuated by, the other valves.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. The valves B B2, rigidly connected by rod K, and the intermediate valve, H, loose on said rod, in combination with a chest having inlet D and channels I2 I2, the latter so arranged that the steam will not actuate valves B B2 until the main ports are covered, for the purpose specied.
2. In steam-actuated valves, the combination of a chest having the channels I2 I3 and live-steam space d, the loose middle valve, H, open on top, having exhaust-space F', and provided with channels I I2, andthe piston-valves B B2, having steamspaces b b and end excisions, b2, as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE HILL DIOKSON.
