Description

Aug- 10, 1965 v. s. NORTY POWER OPERATED GUTTER Filed Aug. l2. 1963 INVENTOR. l/LADIMIR S. NURTY BYcj. O twg lnllllll United States Patent O 3,199,193 PGWER QPERATED QUERER Vladimir Norty, i6@ Dewitt St., New Haven, Conn. Filed Aug. 12, 1953, Ser. No. BllAZl 3 Qiaims. (Cl. Sil-Z il) My invention relates to power operated cutting devices and more particularly to power operated devices used for the cutting of cables, rods and the like.
One of the important objects of my invention is to provide a power operated cutter which can develop ample force to cut strong cables and bars and which can be operated very conveniently even in confined quarters where with the customary hand tools the cutting work would be very diicult and slow, if not impossible.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a power operated cutter which may be operated equally well by an electric, pneumatic or hydraulic motor and thereby can be easily adapted to particular working conditions.
A -turther object of my invention is to provide a power operated cutting tool which is reliable in operation and can be manufactured economically.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
ln the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present application, wherein, for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred form of my invention,
FGURE 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the preferred form of my power operated cutter,
FGURE 2 is a top view of the cutting blade and the connected plunger screw,
FlGURE 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3*?) ot FIGURE 1.
Referring to FlG. l of the drawing, the body or frame or" my power operated cutter is composed of a tubular rear portion l and a hook shaped front portion 2 provided with a cavity for receiving the object to be cut, and an internal fixed cutting edge. Part of said front portion 2 of the body is covered by the cover 3, secured by bolts, and having space between them for the disposition of a slidable cutting blade 5 which, in the form illustrated, has a slanting sharp cutting edge which may be brought into cutting relation with said fixed cutting edge of said front portion 2. The alternating sliding motion of the cutting blade 5, necessary for the cutting operation, is accomplished by means of the plunger screw il, which is non-rotatable and havings at its front end a rectangular head 9, which is secured to said cutting blade 5, and is provided with a threaded portion lil adjacent to its rear end. The cutting blade 5 is provided with a rectangular opening 6, adjacent to the rectangular head 9, for the mounting of the front butter spring 7, which is secured to said head d. The top view of this assembly of the cuting blade, plunger screw and front butler spring is shown in FIG. 2
The rectangular head 9 and the connected front butler spring 7 are slidable within the passage d, which is formed by two opposing grooves, as shown in FIGB. lt is essential in this invention that the front end or this passage 4 is so located that it engages the spring 7 before the extreme front position of the cutting blade 5 and the connected parts is reached, with the result, that this spring '7 will be compressed in this extreme front position of the cutting blade and the connected plunger screw 8.
Mounted within the tubular rear body portion l is the cylindrical sleeve 11, which is rotatably supported and axially retained by the ball bearings 12 and 13 and is provided with a drive end 15 to be connected to a reversible motor 17, which may be electric, pneumatic or hydraulic. The numeral 18 represents the handle of the device.
ltlldd Patented Aug, lil, llid The cylindrical sleeve lll has an internal threaded portion M designed to cooperate with the threaded portion lo of the plunger screw. Mounted inside the sleeve ll is the rear butler spring l, which is so positioned that it is compressed by the end of the plunger screw d in the extreme rear position of this screw and the connected cutter blade 5.
It is essential in this invention that the cooperating threaded portions lll and lll of the screw and the sleeve, respectively, are so dimensioned that in the extreme front position of the screw and the connected parts the threaded portion lib moves out of engagement with the threaded portion ld so that the sleeve ll may continue its previous rotation without further advancing the screw and the connected parts. Similarly, in the extreme rear position of the screw and the connected parts the threaded portion lil moves out of engagement with the threaded portion ld in the opposite direction so that the sleeve may continue its rotation without further withdrawing the screw and the connected parts.
The operation of my device is as follows: rEhe obiect to be cut is placed into the hool; shaped cavity against the fixed cutting edge; the movable cutting blade 5 being withdrawn. Then, the reversible motor is started to rotate the sleeve il in the direction in which the screw and the connected cutting blade advance toward the fixed cutting edge. As this movement continues the front end of the butter screw '7 will contact the end of the passage 4, so that the further advance will compress the spring 7. When the cutter blade 5 and the connected parts reach the extreme front position the threaded portions of the screw and the sleeve disengage, oerrnitting the sleeve to continue its previous rotation without further advancing the cutter blade and the connected parts and without overloading the driving motor. The movement of the cutter blade is so designed that in the extreme front position of the cutting lade the cutting operation is completed.
rThe next step is the withdrawal of the cutting blade. This is accomplished by reversing the rotation or" the driving motor. Due to axial pressure exerted by the compressed spring 7 at the reversed rotation of the sleeve il the threaded portion lil and l-/l will engage causing the withdrawal of the cutting blade by the plunger screw 3. This rearward motion will continue until the cutting blade and the connected screw e" reach the estreme rear position, when the threaded portions lll and l:- again disengage preventing a further rearward motion of the cutting blade and the connected parts i-f the motor lcontinue to run. rlhen, the cutting operation being completed the motor may be deenergized. As in this extreme rear position the rear butler spring lo is compressed, the threaded portions and ld will engage automatically as soon as the motor is started in the reverse direction to advance the cutting blade 5 for another cutting operation.
lt is to be understood that the form herein described and illustrated is only an example of the same, that various changes in the size, shape and in the arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
l. A power operated cutter comprising a body having a hook shaped cavity with an internal fixed cutting edge; a cut-ting blade slidable within said body in cutting relation with said fixed cutting edge; a plunger screw attached to said cutting blade and having a threaded portion; a front butler spring secured to the front end of said plunger screw; a sleeve rotatable and axially retained within said body and being operatively connected to a reversible power driving means, said sleeve contains a of my invention Vree-tion'without further advancing said screw and blade,
at opposite direction of rotation of said sleeve,V due to the pressure of said compressed front buier spring said threads engage causing the withdrawal of said screw and cutting blade until the front thread of the screw passes the rear thread ot the sleeve and saidrear butter spring is compressed, in which position the sleeve may continue its rotation in the same directiony without further withdrawing the screw and blade, and lat another reversal of the rotation of the sleeve, due to the pressure of the contracted rear butter spring, said threads engage so as to advance the screw and blade toward said fixed cuttingy edge. f
