The present invention relates to hydraulic presses for bending and folding metal sheets or other materials by means of suitable tools.
The press according tothe present invention is characterized in that it comprises at least one hydraulic ram acting upon the pivot of one pair of toggle links, said pivot being connected through a rigid rod to the horizontal pivot of another pair of toggle links located opposite ,the iirst one so that these toggle links move all in the same plane, the upper links of said pairs being pivoted to the frame of the press about respective parallel axes and being parallel together, the lower links of said pairs, which fare also parallel together, being pivoted to pulling members movable vertically with respect to said frame and which serve to guide and to move the movable plate of the press, so as t ensure translatory displacements of said plate, means being provided to adjust vertically the relative position of said movable plate with respect to at least one of said pulling members.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings given merely by way of example.

The machine illustrated by the drawings comprises a hydraulic ram 2 operated by a pump 1, which may be either a hand pump or a motor pump. The piston 3 of this ram is connected to the pivot of a rst pair of toggle links 4, this pivot 25 being itself connected through a rigid rod 5 with the pivot 24 of a second pair of toggle links 6. The upper links of these pairs are pivoted to the machine frame 9 at '7 and 8 respectively. The cylinder of the hydraulic ram is pivoted to the machine frame 9 at 1t). The lower links of the two pairs are pivoted, about axes 11 and 12, to pulling forked members 13 and 14 slidable vertically with respect to frame 9. Forked member 13 is guided longitudinally and transversely, that is, member 13 is guided to allow motion in a vertical direction only, with respect to frame 9 whereas forked member 14 is only guided transversely, that is, member 1d is guided yto allow motion in a longitudinal direction as well as in a vertical direction, with respect to said frame. Thus rod 2li and forked member 13 can only move in a vertical direction due to guide means 31 Whereas the motion of a forked member 14 is restricted from any transverse motion but is free to swing about pivot 11 in a plane parallel to frame 9 and is guided in a vertical direction only to `the extent that pivot 11 is so guided. Member 11 is connected to plate 1S so that it can readily be seen that the amount of deviation of member 14 from the vertical in a plane parallel to frame 9 is dependent on the inclination of plate 15. Pivot 11 is guided to allow only vertical motion thereof. Bushings 32 and forked members 13 3,198,196 Patented Aug. 3, 1965 and 111i prevent transverse motion of pivots 11 and 12. As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, bushings 32 are depicted spaced trom frame 9. In practice, `these bushings can be located adjacent frame 9 leaving the desired clearance. The movable plate 15 of the press is connected, through trunnions 16 and 17 and threaded sleeves 18 and 19, with threaded rods lil and 21 rigidly Xed to forked members 13 and 14. By means of handwheels 22 and 23, mounted on threaded sleeves 18 and 19 to drive them in rotation, it is possible either to give movable plate 15 any desired inclination on the horizontal or t0 adjust the position of said plate in the vertical direction. Such adjustment is, of course, possible by operating etiher or both handwheels.
lt will be understood that the displacements of piston 3 in cylinder 2 produce substantially horizontal displacements of pivots 24 and 2,5, possibly until these pivots come into the respective vertical planes determined by axes 8, 12 and 7, 11, respectively. Thus forked members 13 and 14 are moved downwardly or upwardly according as piston 3 is moved toward the left or toward the right respectively.
When the machine is operated manually, movable plate 15 is returned, after every downward displacement thereof, into initial position by air or another compressible i'luid which has been compressed, in a variable volume chamber of cylinder 2, by the movement of piston 3 toward the left. When the air under pressure which has moved piston 3 toward the left is allowed to escape by means or valve 3i), the expansion of the compressed air in the chamber of cylinder 2 returns piston 3 toward the right.
When the machine is motor operated, hand pump 1 is replaced by a four-way distributing valve and piston 3 is returned to its initial position by causing the iiuid under pressure to tlow through another way.
The stroke of movable plate 15 may be adjusted by means of a distributing valve actuated by an adjustable part mounted on the mechanism which transmits the working pressure.
As the movable plate 15 of the press is guided and driven by means of forked members 13 and 14, bars or sections of any desired length and of a width which may be as great as the distance between the branches of the forked members can be bent in a continuous manner, by means of tools such as 26 and Z7. Replacement of the tools is easy since they can be inserted from the side. The use of forked members 13, 14 and of threaded rods 2t), 21 permits of adjusting the height of the movable plate 15 by means of graduated scales 2S, 29 mounted rotatable with respect to handwheels 22, 23 and which, for any positions of said handwheels, can be brought into zero position.
An important advantage of the machine lies in the fact: that, although it is operated hydraulically, it permits obtaining strictly parallel displacements of movable plate 15, even if the machine acts laterally. Furthermore, the machine may be operated either manually or by means of a motor Without having to undergo any modification.
Owing to the fact that links 4 and 6 may be of great length, the stroke of movable plate 15 may be very long.
For a given weight the machine permits obtaining a high pressure action because it does not include the usual costly connecting uprights between frame 9 and plate 15.
Another advantage of the machine is that with a single cylinder and a relatively low pressure there is obtained a relatively high Working pressure, the whole of the control mechanism being enclosed in the lower frame portion 9.
Furthermore, the idle stroke, during the pressing operation, takes place at high speed whereas the active strokes take place softly or slowly. The return movement of the movable plate 15 also takes place at high speed.
In a general manner, while I have, in the above description, disclosed what I deem to be a practical and eihcient embodiment of the invention, it should be Well understood that I do not wishf to be limited thereto, as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the parts without departing from the principle of the present invention as comprehended within the scope of the accompanying claims.
What I claim is:
1. A press of the type described which comprises in having a bifurcated section straddling saidframe with elements of said section disposed adjacent to vertical sidesv of said frame, said members being movable vertically with respect to said frame, means guiding one of said members for vertical movement only with respect to said frame,
l0 combination, a fixed frame, two forked members each two pairs of toggle links, each of said pairs comprising y f allel to said horizontal axis and its lower link pivoted to the other of said members so that the links of one pair are parallel to the corresponding links of the other pair,
respectively, said members being located'at a distanceV from each other in a direction perpendicular to said axes and said toggle links being located in `substantially the same vertical plane, a connecting rod extending between said pivots, a plate having its ends operatively connected with said members so as to be movable vertically with respect to said frame by simultaneous displacements of said members, a hydraulic ram including a piston and cylinder movable with respect to each other, said piston being operatively connected to one of the pivots in a substantially horizontal direction by which said pairs of toggle links are expanded to move said plate toward said frame, and means for'independently adjusting in the vertical direction the connection between each end of said plate andthe corresponding member for varying the inclination of said plate. 2. A press according to claim 1 wherein the adjusting means comprises a threadedfrod yrigid with each of said members, a threaded sleeve screwed on said threaded rod, means for operatively connecting said sleeve with said plate and means for rotating said sleeve with respect lto said rod. v

1.
