Description

J1me 1965 R. MIGNEAULT ETAL '3',
WINDOW SCREEN MOUNTING Filed Feb. 11, 1963 PATENT AGEN T WgTORS i 0 7 l United States Patent 3,190,348 WWDUW SCREEN MDUNTING Romuald Migneault and Fernand W. Migneault, both of 332 St. Andre St., Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Filed Feb. 11, 1963, Ser. No. 257,641 2 'Ciaims. (Cl. 160-369) This invention relates to window screen mounting structures.
In sashless window installations, it is usually necessary to provide a screen mounting arrangement which is independently mounted in the window frame. This screen mounting is desirably of simple form and while the screen itself may be easy to install and remove, there is frequently a lack of adequate security which results in accidental displacement of the screen under certain conditions.
It is an object of this invention to provide a screen mounting for sashless windows which is simple in form and inexpensive to manufacture, and which is capable of fully elfective retention of a screen therein while permitting convenient and rapid installation and removal of the screen.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a screen mounting in accordance with the invention,
FIGURE 2 is an elevation on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of a retainer member, and
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of retainer member.
Referring to the drawing, a window frame is indicated generally at 1 and comprisese a sill'2, jambs 3, and head piece 4, all of generally conventional form. Sashless glass panels, mounted therein, are indicated at 5.
A screen 6, of standard construction, comprises a metal frame 7 supporting a screen panel 7a.
The screen is adapted to be seated on the sill 2, with one side edge portion of its frame 7 disposed in a groove 8 in one of the jambs 3, and its top edge portion disposed in a groove 9 in the head piece. The screen has a strip 10 of resilient sponge rubber or plastic composition fixed to the inside surface of the other side edge portion of frame 7, whereby when the screen is positioned in the grooves described, strip 10 will be in substantial sealing engagement with one of the glass panels 5.
Means are provided for retaining the screen in the indicated position and comprises, as shown in FIGURE 3, a member 11 of channel-shaped form and having a bottom wall 12, side walls 13, and an end wall or shoulder 14, joining the ends of side walls 13 at one end of the member, the other end of the channel being open as illustrated. The member 11 may be formed of metal, plastic composition or the like. The member 11 is mounted on the sill as by screws whereby an end of the bottom portion of the screen frame seats in the channel. Thus, the side walls 13 prevent lateral movement of the screen and the shoulder 14 holds the screen firmly seated in the groove 8. Groove 9 in the head piece has an excess depth (beyond that required to retain the screen therein when seated on the sill) to 3,190,348 Patented June 22, 1965 permit upward movement of the screen over the side walls 13 whereby the screen may be swung laterally during installation and removal of the screen from its mounted position in the frame. In other words, the excess depth of groove 9 should be slightly greater than the height of the side walls 13.
FIGURE 4 illustrates a modified form of retainer also intended for mounting on the sill. This retainer 16 has a base plate 17 to be screwed to the sill and having a shoulder 18 struck up therefrom, such shoulder being adapted to enter a slot (not shown) in the frame of the screen.
It will be apparent that the screen mounting described, and particularly in respect of the association of the retainer member described with the screen mounting structure, makes it possible to install or remove a screen conveniently and quickly, while providing a most secure and permanent mounting.
An important feature of the invention resides in the fact that the retainer member is of cheap and easy manufacture and may be mounted quickly on the sill.
We claim:
1. The combination with a window frame having a sill, jambs, a head piece, a screen receiving groove in said head piece and a screen receiving groove in one of said jambs, of a screen mounting comprising a retainer member having a base plate seated on and fixed to said sill, and a screen engageable shoulder fixed to said base plate and extending perpendicularly therefrom, said shoulder being located in opposed relation to said jamb groove and a screen seated on said sill and having a frame, said screen frame having one side edge portion disposed in said jamb groove and another side edge portion in engagement with said shoulder.
2. The combination with a window frame having a sill, jambs, a head piece, a screen receiving groove in said head piece and a screen receiving groove in one of said jambs, of a screen mounting comprising a retainer member having a base plate seated on and fixd to said sill, spaced side walls extending perpendicularly from said base plate and forming therewith a screen receiving channel, and a screen engageable shoulder joining said side walls at the end thereof remote from said groove to close one end of said channel, the other end of said channel being open and a screen seated on said sill and having a frame, said screen frame having one side edge portion disposed in said jamb groove and another side edge portion in engagement with said shoulder.
