KISTNER BY M ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,189,245 CARTON Oscar J. Kistner, Cincinnati, Ohio, assignor to The Mead Corporation, Dayton, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Filed May 9, 1963, Ser. No. 279,220 Claims. (Cl. 229-16) The present invention relates to a novel shipping container.
Generally, there is provided a shipping container formed of a single rectangular blank which is cut and scored with a minimum loss of material therefrom and which, when assembled, provides a body having a hinged cover. The body is provided with a forward wall which may be pivoted forwardly when the cover is lifted to permit inspection of the contents but which, when in vertical normal position, is held in such position by the marginal portions of the cover. The carton is made preferably of solid fiber or corrugated board or, alternatively, may be made of moisture resistant materials, materials impregnated or coated for moisture proofing or the like when being used for contents such as meat or produce.
An important feature of the device is that it may be opened and reclosed, again and again if desired, without damage to the carton.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a container of the character described which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efiicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a carton of the character set forth in which a minimum of wastage is necessary in manufacturing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the character set forth which may be opened and closed without the destruction of any part thereof.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide in a carton of the character set forth, a novel pivoted forward wall structure forming a part of the invention.
Still another object of the invention is to provide in a carton of the character set forth, a pivoted forward wall and novel means for retaining the same in normal closed position.
Other and further objects of the invention will be come apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a blank utilized in constructing an embodiment of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a carton formulated in accordance with the teachings of the present invention and illustrating the same in fully opened condition;
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to- FIGURE 2 but showing the body thereof in closed condition and the cover in open condition; and,
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURES 2 and 3 but illustrating carton in fully closed condition.
With reference to the drawings, there is shown in FIG- URE 1, a container made of a single foldable blank of flexible material, such as paperboard or the like. The blank is divided by score lines 11, 12, 13 and 14 into hingedly interconnected panels including a front wall panel 15, a bottom wall panel 16, a rear wall panel 17, a
cover panel 18 and a front cover flap 19.
Score lines 20 at either side of cover panel 18 hingedly interconnect with cover side flaps 21. Score lines 22 at either side of panel 19 hingedly interconnect flap extension members 23.
Score lines 24 at either side of panel 17 hingedly interconnect rear side wall members 25 while score lines 26 at either side of panel 15 hingedly interconnect forward side wall members 27. At either side of bottom panel 16, score lines 28 hingedly interconnect bottom extensions 29.
In assembling blank 10 into the carton illustrated in FIGURES 2 to 4 inclusive, it will be seen that rear wall panel 17 is first bent to a vertical position after which bottom extension members 29 are likewise bent to vertical position to overlap portions of the members 25 whereupon the overlapped portions :are stapled, as indicated at 30. Flap members 19 and 21 are then bent to right angular relation to the top or cover 18, as shown in FIGURE 2, and extensions 23 are bent forwardly and stapled to the overlapped portion of members 21, as shown at 31.
The front side wall members may now be bent to right angular relation with respect to front panel 15 and panel 15 then raised to vertical position whereupon the free edges of the front and rear side panel members 25 and 27 will come together as shown in FIGURES 3 and 4. The cover and its allied structure may then be brought forwardly to encompass both the rear and front portions of the body of the container as illustrated in FIGURE 4 in which condition, it will be apparent that flap 19, side flaps 21 and extensions 23 will act to retain the front wall and its allied structure in a compact condition, again as illustrated in FIGURE 4. When, however, it is desired to open the container for any reason such as to inspect the contents of the container, it is only necessary to raise the cover 18 to thus free the front wall and its allied structure whereupon the front wall may be moved forwardly to the position shown in FIGURE 2 after which, whenever desired, the container may again be closed to the condition shown in FIGURE 4.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A container comprising a bottom wall, a rear wall, a cover hingedly connected to the upper edge of said rear wall, a front wall hingedly connected to the forward edge of said bottom walls, a rear half side wall extending forwardly from each side of said rear Wall, a front half side wall extending rearwardly from each side of said front wall, a flap upwardly extending from each side of said bottom wall and affixed in each case to the overlapped portion of the adjacent rear half side wall and means carried by said cover for retaining said front wall in closed condition.
2. A container comprising a bottom wall, a rear wall, a cover hingedly connected to the upper edge of said rear wall, a front wall hingedly connected to the forward edge of said bottom wall, a rear half side wall extending forwardly from each side of said rear wall, a front half side it wall extending rearwardly from each side of said front wall, a flap upwardly extending from each side of said bottom wall and affixed in each case to the overlapped portion of the adjacent rear half side wall, and means carried by said cover for retaining said front wall in closed condition, said means comprising interconnected front and side flap members carried by said cover and adapted to overlap a portion of said front wall when the latter is in closed condition.
