THOMPSON EDWIN GARSUGH AND THOMAS JONES, OF VIOLA, WISCONSIN.
IVllTER-BOX.
srncrrrcerron forming part. of Letters Pa e. No. 318,464, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed January 4, 1884. Renewed April 30, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMPSON EDWIN GARSUOH and THOMAS J ONES, citizens of the United States, residing at Viola, in the county of Richland and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an attachment for miter-boxes, especially of the Langdon class, and the objects of the same are to provide suitable adjustable means for holding molding material of different widths in position while being sawed, and to provide a measuring-scale properly graduated, by means of which the exact length of molding may be readily ascer tained and a uniformity of length in the man ufacture of picture-frames obtained.
\Vith these and other objects in View our improvements consist in the attachment and its adjuncts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents our improvements in connection with the outlines of a Langdon miter box, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment.
A represents atriangular-shaped box-frame, composed of the bed-piece B and the back 0, mounted upon suitable supports. The adjacent end of the back Ois shouldered to form a flush connection with the back of the miterbox.
To the inner edge of the bed-piece B is arranged a scale bar or strip, E, properly gradua-ted to inches and fractions thereof and extending from right to left; also the upper sur face of the bed-piece is graduated with diagonal lines arranged at an angle of forty-five degrees, to register with the scale 011 the scalebar E, as shown. By means of the graduated scale-bar, in connection with the graduated bed-piece, much trouble and annoyance are obviated in ascertaining the proper length and miter-joint for the desired cut.
The block D, placed transversely under the (N0 model.)
legs of one end of the miter-box and the legs of the adjacent end of the miter-box attachment, is to make them level with each other.
To the bed-piece B is attached the stop gage or rest F, provided with an elongated transverse slot, at, through which passes a thumbscrew bolt, b, said thumb-screw bolt being secured firmly on the under side of the bed-piece by means of a nut. This stop gage or rest, which is preferably triangular in shape, is made of wood or other suitable material, and by means of the elongated slot a is adapted to be adjusted to moldings of different widths.
After the desired length to be sawed has been ascertained by the graduated scale on the bed-piece the molding is moved forward and clamped in position by the adjustable gage F, thus securing a solid sawing means.
\Vh n other material than molding is to be sawed, the stop gage or rest F and its fastening means are removed, and the attachment is in condition for wide boards or very wide molding.
The graduated scale-bar being flush with the bed-piece, or forming an integral part thereof, does not interfere with the sawing or in its attachment to a miter-box.
\Vhat we claim is In an attachment for miter-boxes, the combination, with the bed-piece B, having scalegraduations corresponding with the scale graduations on a scale-bar, E, at the front of the bed-piece provided at its rear edge with the back-piece C, of the triangular stop-gage F, slotted transversely at a, and removably and adj ustably secured to the scaled bed-piece by the thumbscrew bolt and nut d b, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMPSON EDWIN GARSUGH. THOMAS JONES. \Vitnesses:
R. H. DE LAP, N. H. BURGOR.
