JAMES J. GOUSINS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,454, dated May 26, 1885.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, J lures Josnrrr COUSINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Machine for the Manufacture of Stick- Oandy, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine that will form the candy into the desired size of stick, and at the same time impart the necessary twist to it, so that it may be cut into the desired length or pieces for the market. I accomplish this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on line a b of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Similar letters of reference are used to indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
The machine is secured to a table or other suitable support by means of screws passed forming mechanism will twist the stick into through the base of the frame A.
The upper face of the frame or standard is cut away to receive a beveled wheel, B, which is operated by ajournal, B, that is mounted in the boxing 011 the top of the frame and driven by a pulley, H.
At a right angle to the journal 13 or transversely across the frame is placed a tube, 0, operating in a suitable boxing, and to the outer end of which is attached a beveled wheel or gear, B which meshes with the beveled wheel 13. The tube or pipe 0 does not extend quite through the frame, and the end thereof is provided with a screw'thread, by
which the sticleforming device is connected, and which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The feeding, forming, and stick -twisting device consists of the rotary tube 0 and two grooved feeding-rollers, D, the latter being contained within a box or casing divided longitudinally, and held in place by screws. These wheels or rollers are roughened or corrugated on their periphery; or slight indentations or lines may be made across the face of the grooves, so as to bite the roll or stick as it is being formed or drawn through the stickforming mechanism. These feeding rollers are operated by the beveled wheels 0 and E through the medium of a spur and pinion, F F, connected to the roller feeding frame, which latter also operates two gear-wheels, G G, upon the outer face of the roller frame or casing. The spindles of the latter pass through the casing and the feeding-rollers, and the spindle of the wheel G passes also through the spur-wheel F and has one end of its bearing in the bracket or frame beneath, while the spindle of the spur passes through the beveled wheel E, and this latter wheel meshes with the beveled wheel 0 011 the inner face of the frame above described.
The stick forming and twisting mechanism is coupled to the end of the tube 0 by a screwcoupling or male and female coupling, and when so connected and rotation is imparted to the pulley H, gears B B and tube'O the grooved friction or feeding rollers D D, actuated by the gears O E and intermediate connections, will move inwardly and draw the stick forward and form it, and at the same time the rotary motion imparted to the stickthe desired form and carry it along through the tube to the outer side of the machine, to be cut into the desired length for the market.
It should here be observed that in the use of my machine a large amount of time and labor is saved, and the stick is formed and twisted at one and the same time.
Having thus described my invention,wl1atI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In the manufacture of candy, a feeding, stick-forming, and twisting mechanism consisting, essentially, of a rotary tube and two grooved and serrated wheels or rollers placed in juxtaposition, and operated by toothed gears and beveled wheels connected to suitable gears mounted upon a standard or frame, whereby a horizontal and feeding and a rotary or twisting mot-ion is produced, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for the manufacture of stickcandy, the grooved wheels or rollers operating within a suitable easing by means of a spur and pinion, beveled gears, and toothed wheels, and provided with a feeding and guidin g tube connected by a male and female coup ling to a rotary tube, 0, placed transversely across the standard or frame, whereby a pasl constructed, arranged, and operating-substan- 1o sage is had for the stick to pass through the tiallyin the manner herein set forth and specimachine as it is being formed, as described. fied.
3. In a machinefor the manufacture of stick- In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 5 candy, the combination and arrangement of have hereunto set my hand and seal.
